The brilliant British boy band Five once sang:

"Slam dunk da funk....A put it up...If ya got that feelin..."

I think you'll agree that 1998 hit was one of the all time greats.

It's ringing in the ears of Henrik Stenson as he has just landed one straight in the cup from the fairway on 11. No bounces, it just crashed into the hole and did not go anywhere else. No bounces, a proper slam dunk.

  2. Bogeypublished at 22:52 British Summer Time 15 June 2017

Day (+3) McIlroy (level) Rose (level, all after nine)

The turn is reached for Rory McIlroy with a par on the par three. Jason Day drops another one. In fairness, his dig from the sand was as good as he could have hoped for, leaving eight feet. The putt slid close but not close enough. Justin Rose is typically steady at level.

Cameron Champ is having a pretty good 22nd birthday.

The American amateur is two under par in his very first round of US Open golf, having carded successive birdies.

    He's earned his cake.

    Jason Day right now...

He has just flown the ninth green - a par three. I can't begin to tell you how ugly the spot he wound up in looked. A mix of grass and fescue.

I make that three bunkers in two holes for Day. I liked the beach as a kid but even I know when enough is enough...

  6. Postpublished at 22:44 British Summer Time 15 June 2017

    Garcia E, Watson +1, Scott +3 (10)

Sergio Garcia clips a nine iron approach some 180-odd yards and leaves himself around 16 feet from the pin.

Adam Scott is a little further down the fairway, and goes closer to the flag too - that stops dead within seven feet of the target.

Bubba then, getting right underneath that and pitching right in the middle of his playing partners' efforts.

    Leishman (-5 after 12)

Marc Leishman is moving along nicely and drains another birdie on 12. A long putt, left to right, into the heart of the cup.

    Garcia E, Watson +1, Scott +3 (10)

Bubba Watson set up for that tee shot like David Beckham taking a free-kick, body almost sideways on to the ball, and it looked like he was aiming at the trees.

It whips right and then a long way left in more Roberto Carlos-fashion, and nestles on the fairway.

Bubba liked that so much he's treating himself to a snack as he wanders down the fairway.

Adam Scott and Sergio Garcia occupy a similar lie.

England's Tommy Fleetwood opened his weekend with a fantastic five under par and the Southport golfer was delighted with his start.

"You plan to play for pars and don't think too much about shooting a score," he said. "This morning was the best conditions we're going to get all week.

"It was great to get it going and I holed a few key putts. I didn't really expect to be five under to be honest.

"It's great to be back playing in these events. It's not the same sitting on your couch watching at home."

  10. Rory bogey, Casey birdiepublished at 22:37 British Summer Time 15 June 2017

Day (+2) McIlroy (level, both after 8) Casey (-4 after 9)

Jason day converts a straight putt from eight feet while Rory McIlroy cannot save his par from a little further out.

Paul Casey moves to four under, a blow back from the leading Briton Tommy Fleetwood but Casey has nine holes to play. Good judgement in dropping his right-to-left birdie putt into the cup.

    Now, speaking of Fleetwood...

  11. Club golf from Day!published at 22:33 British Summer Time 15 June 2017

    Day (+1 after 7)

Welcome to our world Jason Day.

Tight to the front of the bunker near the eighth green he swings through, watches the ball hit the lip, skip right and find an adjacent bunker. That my friends is the kind of nightmare stuff only us mere mortals seem capable of on our local course. Indeed, even at our lowly level, we'd be disgusted.

On a serious note, Jason Day will be at least two over after this hole. That'll teach him for smiling at Erin Hills...

  12. Bogey for Garciapublished at 22:32 British Summer Time 15 June 2017

    Garcia E, Watson +1, Scott +3 (10)

Well, with all that excitement surrounding Bubba, Sergio Garcia has gone under the radar and dropped a shot at the 10th.

That takes him back to level, and Sergio isn't impressed. Waving his hand around in disbelief.

I don't think anyone can argue with that Andrew. That was a hell of a hook from McIlroy.

He clumps his club through the rough and chunks the ball out of there. It finds sand and he will have to get up and down to stay in red numbers. Nice sweep through the sand, needs a nice landing... meh... not great. Some 12ft left for par.

    Keep in touch on #bbcgolf.

There is he, a dot of pink in an Erin Hills bunker. Now Bubba Watson needs to concentrate, if he gets this wrong it'll be out of the sand and into the fescue.

That is smart, nice bit of fairway to play with. And how about this? Bubba nearly holes with his approach shot!

The American floats it up just above the pin and it spins back, kissing the cup before staying up - what a rollercoaster of a hole.

Paul Casey's game travels. He's playing well this year and he can win anywhere. He's happy and comfortable with his place in life right now and he's not over-complicating things.

Casey saves par on eight. He has averaged 1.38 putts today, the fifth best mark out there.

Beef's got 99 problems and fescue is every one of them right now...

We've really put the jinx on him.

After that bogey at the 11th the Englishman finds the rough off the tee and can only hack his way into another batch of knee-high grass some 70 yards away.

There are struggles on nine for big names. Louis Oosthuizen - major winner - tries to chip in from the fringe but thins his ball to leave 40ft. Horrific. As easy on the eyes as a black cloud on your wedding day.

Henrik Stenson is in the sand and already three over. He digs out but putts like a kid swinging a croquet mallet and at least a bogey is coming.

Both men are about to bury themselves here.

If you're sat somewhere in Belfast, Rory McIlroy's ball from the eighth tee may have just landed in your back garden. It was that wide.

Justin Rose is in the fairway, that will make Rory's ball search all the more painful.

As his ball landed in the thick stuff there was no sign of it.

Bubba Watson gets his drive all wrong, that's on its way to Minnesota. Some mishit by the American - and the fairway is 78 yards wide.

Adam Scott nails the fairway and watches his drive skip on, while Sergio Garcia follows suit.

Day (+1) McIlroy (-1) Rose (level, all after 7)

The par five seventh is not giving up an abundance of shots so far. Par fives of course are typically so key in majors.

Rory McIlroy can only make par on the drag, he pays for a loose pitch into the green. No such mistake from Jason Day who begins to claw himself back from that earlier triple bogey. A good solid putt returns him to plus one courtesy of a birdie.
