    Day (-1 after 3)

    Jason DayImage source, Getty Images

Jason Day is destroying himself on the fourth hole. Trouble so big it could threaten Anthony Joshua.

As we have told you, he overhit the green but from what I can see, he then needs his third, fourth and fifth shots to find the green. Chipping from below the putting surface he underhit two efforts which rolled back to his feet. He still has 25ft left too.

Here comes the putt... nope. This could be a triple bogey.

Justin Rose also took an extra chip and is therefore needing to hole out for bogey. Rory Mcilroy executed his sand shot excellently and will make par. A key hole, more coming shortly...

    Fowler (-7)

    Rickie FowlerImage source, Getty Images

A look back at that Rickie Fowler round shows he didn't do anything too spectacular.

Fairways off the tee: 86% (Tied 39th in field)

    Greens in regulation: 83% (21st)

    Driving average: 299 yards (62nd)

    Putts: 27 (Average 1.5 a hole - tied 26th)

It looks like a classic example of just putting everything together nicely, showing the full repertoire of his game rather than doing only certain elements well.

    Spieth +1

Two-time major winner Jordan Spieth struggled to get the ball in the hole today as he posted a one-over-par 73.

He said: "Only missed one fairway so that may be my best driving day ever. I had 15 looks at birdie and only one dropped."

He went on to joke that he and Dustin Johnson will be practising tonight and they might even have a "glorified putting contest".

  6. Sand!published at 21:14 British Summer Time 15 June 2017

Rose, McIlroy, Day (all -1 after 3)

This tricky par four prompts Jason Day into going for the green. He goes at the flag but it's too brave from Day and the ball skips through, down a slope and he has a testing up and down to come.

Justin Rose does the same thing, he hated that as soon as he hit it.

"I think just go straight at it because, you know..." Those are the last words of Rory McIlroy as he swings from the rough. Good hit but it chunks into the wall of a bunker and he's in the sand.

We did say this hole is tricky!

Rory McIlroy, Jason Day and Justin Rose are here...

    Hole four: 439 yards, par-four

The hole was transformed after former owner Bob Lang decided to relocate the green in 2009, placing it just above a dune.

It is now one of the most challenging holes on the course, likely to punish any approach that falls short by leaving an awkward pitch to the green.

Anything hit too long risks rolling into a hazard.

    Casey (-3 after 3)

Paul Casey was taking photos of turtles on his practice round.

He's in the deep rough right now and may well find the odd animal in there too.

What a shot though, digging out to find the green... not quite. This torturous course grins at him as his ball trickles back down a slope and off the surface. That was a shot which deserved far more. Still, he can maybe save par.

    Garcia -2, Watson +1, Scott +3 (5)

Pars all round from Garcia and co.

That fifth had the potential to trip one or two up, but Adam Scott, Bubba Watson and Sergio Garcia all take the putter from the longer turf and stroke it up to within puttable distance.

    As you were.

  10. Bogeypublished at 21:04 British Summer Time 15 June 2017

    McIlroy (-1 after 3)

Rory McIlroy follows his eagle with a silly bogey. Too many putts Rory, too many putts.

The third hole has him scrambling and a short six to eight footer is beyond him for par.

  11. Blimp crashpublished at 21:02 British Summer Time 15 June 2017

Earlier this afternoon, an airship fell from the sky and caught fire close to the US Open during the early stages of the first round at Erin Hills, Wisconsin.

Organisers said the aircraft was "unaffiliated" with the US Open or television coverage of the event.

Eye witnesses posted social media footage, external showing the advertising blimp falling to the ground and the pilot using a parachute to escape.

I don't think I've seen Adam Scott take a practice swing at all yet? He's bogeyed three of the first three holes.

So much for predicted rounds of almost six hours, the Australian looks like he wants to be back in the clubhouse pronto.

As it is, all three of this group end up scattered around the slightly longer stuff on the edge of the green.

We just mentioned the long way Steve Stricker has to the green on three. It's a common theme here as this is the longest US Open ever. How would you get on on the course?

    Stricker (-2 after 2)

That's a big roar again, must be Steve Stricker - a guy who lives down the road.

His putt is downhill and a bit of a snake but he navigates it like Sir Ben Ainslie handles a rubber dingy. A birdie for the 50-year-old.

Tiger Woods used to call on Stricker for putting advice back in the day, that's how good his touch is. On the third, a huge 497-yard par four, he finds the fairway but has some way to the green.

    Garcia -2, Watson +1, Scott +3 (4)

Sergio Garcia has been solid off the tee, but he's yet to crack a smile. The Masters winner drives one a little over 300 yards and finds the fairway on the mammoth par-four fifth.

It's some 514 yards. But has yielded more birdies than bogeys so far today.

Bubba Watson and Adam Scott like the look of their drives, too. That was like watching a darts player fling three arrows into almost identical spots on the board.

  17. Warning!published at 20:50 British Summer Time 15 June 2017

There are some good starts out there but keep in mind the first five holes on this course contain three of the easiest on the day.

The sixth hole, a par three, is the one to watch through your fingers. The toughest one out there stats wise, averaging 3.4 shots.

  18. I'm excited to be back - McIlroypublished at 20:48 British Summer Time 15 June 2017

    McIlroy (-2 after 2)

Rory McIlroy spoke of excitement and high expectations before his tee off. That eagle will have done wonders.

"I'm excited to be back and playing," said McIlroy ."It's been a frustrating year.

"It's a long time since I've been at a tournament just enjoying being here. Everything I have seen in practice has been good. It shows up when you're under the gun in tournaments.

"I'm coming in not with low expectations, because I know what I'm capable of, but I'll feel my way through the first few holes and see where I go from there."

  19. Bogey, bogey...published at 20:46 British Summer Time 15 June 2017

    Garcia -2, Watson +1, Scott +3 (4)

Birdie chance missed for Sergio! That looked on course from six feet or so but swung right at the last minute. Garcia takes par, but he'll be disappointed.

Not a good hole for Bubba Watson either. The short approach costs him and it's a bogey five - Adam Scott follows suit.

  20. Eagle for Rors!published at 20:45 British Summer Time 15 June 2017

    McIrloy (-2 after 2) Rose (-1 after 2) Stricker (-1 after 1)

Talk about a confidence booster. Rory McIlroy turns away with a strut, it's got a hint of a Zlatan Ibrahimovic celebration about it.

He sinks his second shot from the edge of the green for eagle. Uphill, maybe 15ft.

Justin Rose is in for his birdie too, as is Steve Stricker back on the first hole.

More of this and McIlroy will be signing more than memorabilia, he'll be scribbling on the winning card.
