    McIlroy (+6 after 17)

As Justin Rose goes steady, his playing partner Rory McIlroy's wheels come off... again.

Drive... rough... more rough... fairway... green... missed putt.... in.

    A double bogey on the 526-yard par-four 17th.

  2. Hadwin's had a cracker...published at 00:59 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

I'll file Adam Hadwin's shirt in the 'awful' bin but his play is anything but. The Canadian carded six straight birdies earlier and he's now back on it. Another one on the 17th hole of his day comes from a great putt and then it's to the ninth hole, a par three. Like a dart from the hand of Michael van Gerwen it's right on the bullseye, leaving eight feet for birdie. Good look... pulls the putt. File that putt with the shirt. He's in the clubhouse.

The USGA have set the players up to play the course in four hours 52 minutes. The first group today went round in five hours, 13 minutes. By setting that time though they are setting themselves up for a fall.

    McIlroy +4 (16)

    Iain Carter

Regarding comments that Rory made earlier in the week about going home if you can't hit 60-yard fairways...well, he's in the rough again and he looks like he could well be going home.

  5. Game over for Rory?published at 00:50 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    McIlroy (+4 after 16)

Rory McIlroy in dire trouble. He is now really playing his way out of this all together. He is in waist-high grass on the 17th. The ball is above is feet and in the thick stuff. Deep in the thick stuff. He is biting his bottom lip as he swings and the ball comes out but finds more rough.

    Schauffele (-5 after 14) Casey (-5 after 17)

We have another man at five under, American Xander Schauffele putts from off the green and she creeps in the right side of the cup. Super putt from the 23-year-old. This is his first major.

Paul Casey is looking to take it to six under, no one is on that mark, great putt from distance... it kisses the cup but stays out. Cheeky ball.

    McDowell (+4)

It wasn't the start Graeme McDowell wanted. The Northern Irishman finished four over par for the day.

McDowell, who won the tournament in 2010, carded five bogeys in his opening round at Erin Hills.

Reece J: Since winning the masters Danny Willet's game has rapidly fallen to pieces, is it a curse?

A back injury, a loss of caddie through disagreement and a general loss of form Reece. As you say, grim times. Nine over today.

    B Watson (+3) Garcia (-2) Scott (level)

Adam Scott comes from the shadows and puts together the kind of comeback you can only tip the hat to. He missed a tiddler putt on the first hole and carded four bogeys in eight holes. He looked beaten but scrapped and a putt from off the green on 18 brings up eagle and hauls him back to level par. He pumps the air. That result must almost feel like he's shot a 62!

Sergio Garcia is in the cup for birdie, a fine up and down from the bunker from the Master. Bubba Watson has had the nasty day of this trio.

    McIlroy (+4 after 15)

Rory McIlroy from range for par...great putt, great line... unlucky. He will tap in for a bogey will he... NO. A miss from three foot. Double trouble. Four over.

    Garcia (-1 after 17)

"GET UP, GET UP," shouts Sergio Garcia from the 18th fairway. It doesn't listen and he's short of the green. Bunker perhaps.

    Sergio GarciaImage source, Reuters

Sergio Garcia saves par on 17 while on 16, Paul Casey is now hunting the lead a little at five under. His tee shot on the par three looks good but leaves a long putt when it comes to rest. Rory McIlroy is in danger of playing himself out of this by day's end as he is well right and in the sand on 15. The par four could take him back to three over here.

Justin Rose in a rose pink polo shirt. The club shaft shimmers in the sun. He glares at his ball from behind those sunglasses and won't like it. On the green but a time zone away from the pin. McIlroy fluffs from the sand and leaves 30ft for par.

    Leishman (-4) Woo Kim (-3) Garcia (-1 after 16)

Sergio Garcia at one under is chipping from below the 17th green. He nudges the ball into the bank and it kicks on nicely to leave around seven foot for par.

Up on 18, Marc Leishman converts a good knee-knocker for par to end his day on four under. Si Woo Kim, a young man in form this year, birdies with a cracking drop from range to end three under. He'll go get some pancakes and syrup tonight and they will taste sweet after that!

    Rose (-1) McIlroy (+2) Day (+6, all after 14)

    RoseImage source, Reuters

To the 14th, a par five. Rory McIlroy from the fairway puts too much beef on it. Those bicep curls in the gym gave him too much timber there. He will have a massive birdie putt. Justin Rose uses the slope on the dancefloor well and he will have 15ft for birdie. Jason Day will pick up a shot after a great bunker play.

McIlroy to putt from range.... leaves a tap in. Rose, big putt... never going in.

    Johnston (-3)

That is a cracking round for a man who began the day with a bogey six. Andrew Johnston managed six birdies in all and aside from a short wobble halfway through his day, it's all good for one of golf's most loved men.

AJ is 117 in the world and has missed the cut in four of his nine events this year. It looks good here though.

  17. Hard luck Hadwinpublished at 00:10 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    Hadwin -3 (15)

Here's Adam Hadwin on the sixth with a monster putt to become the first man in US Open history to rack up seven consecutive birdies. He's given that a rattle, up and over a little ridge on the green and the ball is tracking towards the hole but it misses and rolls some six, seven, eight feet by.

The par putt misses too and Hadwin is back to three under.

    Matt FitzpatrickImage source, EPA

Matt Fitzpatrick, I love this guy. Goes about his business with a baby face, committed, gets on with it. I bet he's the type who gets nine holes in before he opens his presents on Christmas Day.

A smooth putt from range gets him another birdie and three under. Paul Casey meanwhile can get to five under on the 15th if he drains a mid-range putt... nope.

    Hadwin -4 (14)

Canada's Adam Hadwin is on a birdie run the likes of which you rarely see at a US Open. He started on the 10th and was two over after eight holes. Since then, he has gone birdie, birdie, birdie, birdie, birdie, birdie. Yep. Count each and every one. Six on the spin and he's up to four under.

He's playing the 252-yard par-three sixth right now. Paul Casey birdied that a little earlier...
