Johnston (-3 after 10)
Garcia -1, Watson +1, Scott +3 (9)
Birdie chance for Sergio Garcia at the ninth, but this green is a lot quicker than the last where he nailed a par putt from miles out and it whizzes beyond the hole.
Garcia steadies himself from three feet on the firm, dry turf. Down you go. He reaches the turn at one under.
And what's that? A rarely spotted birdie on the scorecard of Adam Scott today - his first of the tournament.

The fairways are more than generous by US Open standards. And there has been a fair bit of rain so the fairways are playing wider and the greens are softer. We are on course to have more than the US Open record of 42 players under par by the end of round one.
Garcia -1, Watson +1, Scott +4 (8)
That is a fantastic par-saver from Sergio Garcia. Straight as an arrow, into the heart of the cup from long range.
Bubba Watson was anything but steady, though. It looked like he was chasing that putt before he even hit it.
It wobbles wide of the drop from seven feet, but he'll take par.

Johnston - 3 (10)
Andrew 'Beef' Johnston is moving the right way on the leaderboard. The Englishman has just rolled in a birdie on 10, his fourth in six holes, to get to three under. Muted cries of Beeeeeffff from those with memories of last year.
McIlroy -1, Rose E, Day +2 (6)
Justin Rose's last three holes have been more up and down than this glacier-carved Wisconsin course.
Bogey, birdie, bogey for the 2013 US Open champion, as he three putts on the par-three sixth to drop back to level par.

Scott +3 (7)
Adam Scott finds his tee shot buried deep in the fescue that surrounds the eighth hole fairway.
The Australian eyes it up, takes a whack through the long grass and ushers it along, "be kind..."
He's not made it out of the rough, but it is a kind lie for Scott on some shorter grass.
McNealy -2 (5*)
Worth mentioning how the amateurs are getting on just so I can tell you Maverick McNealy is currently leading the way at two under and make a Top Gun pun...
The American birdied his opening two holes at the US Open. Rumours that Goose is his caddie are unconfirmed.
McIlroy (-1 after 5)

Leishman (-2 after 8) Casey (-4 after 6) Rose (-1 after 5)
Marc Leishman has his radar on point today. He swept one in from the fairway earlier on and on the par three ninth he almost buckets the thing. A couple of feet left for birdie but that was close to an ace.
Justin Rose makes birdie on five, confident putt. Now, can Paul Casey make that good fortune count on six. He sends his putt and this looks nice, yep, rolls around the cup and rattles in. He raises his right hand and moves to four under.
Garcia -1, Watson +1, Scott +3 (7)
Breaking Bubba.
Breaking right towards the cup and breaking a smile, that is. It's birdie for Bubba Watson, who reads that green like he wrote it himself as he sinks a smart putt.
Sergio Garcia is also smiling, but it's an exasperated chuckle more than anything. His attempt to save par having been stuck in the fescue earlier comes up millimetres short from around 14 feet or so.
Bogey for the Spaniard.
Day (+2 after 4) Rose (level after 4) Casey (-2 after 5)
Justin Rose will hit a wedge into this fifth hole. He makes it look easy and has around six feet left for birdie. Loads of height and loads of bite from the Rose man. Jason Day from the sand. He thrashes the bucket and spade at it to find the dancefloor, great shot.
Up on six - the hardest hole on the course - Paul Casey gets a huge slice of Wisconsin fortune as his ball bumps and rolls right of the green before taking the slope to wind up six feet from the pin. A birdie on six to come? Surely not...
Garcia -2, Watson +2, Scott +3 (6)
Sergio Garcia is lining up a shot from the rough and you can barely see the Spaniard's legs, the fescue is that high.
He'll have a right hack at it, and the ball barely goes 10 yards. Work to do for Sergio, who'll be picking bits of grass out of his pockets for the next few holes.
It's a good response from the Masters champion, though. He's on the green in four at the par-five seventh - but with some work to save par.
Johnston (-2 after 8)
This is a lovely round from Andrew 'Beef' Johnston as he reaches the final home before the turn. He's two under through eight and this par three down the hill is not going to kill his momentum.
Lovely swing, in line with the pin and around 15ft to the left of the target. Outside chance of a birdie awaits.
Rose (level) Day (+2) McIlroy (-1)
Justin Rose makes his bogey after that poor chip, Jason Day cards a triple.
Do not go over the green on four folks. It will weigh heavy on your dreams.
The three big names walk on to five, another very hard hole at 514 yards.
Garcia -2, Watson +2, Scott +3 (6)
Adam Scott has steadied the ship some what.
The Australian steps up to the tee with his driver and hammers one fairway-bound - any quicker a transition and he'll be giving it a Happy Gilmore.
Bubba Watson, meanwhile, has dragged his tee shot into the long grass that skirts these Erin Hills fairways.
Driver, meet turf. Bubba thumps the head of his club into the ground in frustration.
Garcia -2, Watson +2, Scott +3 (6)
Bubba Watson has found a greenside bunker, he chips out on to the green superbly but needs this to save par.
It's rolling, rolling... not rolling far enough. Just short, and that's another bogey for Bubba.
Sergio Garcia is on the green in two. He fires one with the putter up the rolling Erin Hills green and watches it pick up speed on the way back down. That's covered some distance, and the Spaniard will knock it in for par.
