The final putt is hit by Kisner. No major this time for the mild-mannered 33-year-old, who finishes with a double bogey and he ties for seventh place. Thomas wins the Championship by two strokes.

  3. Stroud finishes one underpublished at 00:03 British Summer Time 14 August 2017

Stroud rolls one up from 20 feet, it doesn't drop and he taps in for a 76. Winner last week he has earned a share of ninth place in a major.

  4. Contrasting emotions on the final greenpublished at 00:02 British Summer Time 14 August 2017

The massive galleries are already filing out as poor old Chris Stroud plays from the bunker at the last. Not to be for those lucky checked trousers today. Behind the green Thomas is on his mobile, not sure if those are tears or beads of sweat in the humid Carolina sunshine, perhaps both. I think we're all a little emotional as we come to the end of the Championship.

    Thomas (-8 after 18)

Justin Thomas sits hunched over in that same chair, watching Kevin Kisner's approach on a television screen. A huge sigh of relief greets the splash, followed by a slap on the shoulders from his caddie.

"Nice job, Justin," he drawls. Then our new champion goes to his bag to have a ruffle around. Maybe he's taking any uneaten bananas out. Don't want a nasty surprise when he goes back in there next week.

  7. THOMAS WINS PGA CHAMPIONSHIPpublished at 23:55 British Summer Time 13 August 2017

This for the half then, from 180 yards, but Kisner turns away in disgust as the ball curves left. He has put it in the stream and Justin Thomas is your champion.

    Thomas (-8 after 18)

Check. Double check. Sign. Don't bodge this up Justin...

His caddie reads back his numbers, Thomas sitting at the table in the scorer's room, hand running through thinning fair hair, reciting every shot.

    Our champion-elect looks emotionally drained...

  9. Kisner at the 18thpublished at 23:54 British Summer Time 13 August 2017

Only two birdies at the 500-yard par four finishing hole today. Certainly no eagles. That's what Kisner needs to take the Championship to a play-off.

He's in the middle of the fairway along with Stroud, who is a rather distant two under for the Championship and wouldn't have wanted this scenario for the 72nd hole.

Justin Thomas is taking the plaudits at the side of the 18th, his back being slapped and congratulations being offered by plenty. First on the scene is his dad Mike, before close pals Rickie Fowler and Jordan Spieth give him warm hugs.

  12. After 17 holespublished at 23:50 British Summer Time 13 August 2017

    -6 Kisner (two behind)

Back on the 17th green, Kisner has a long putt for birdie but he leaves it short and stays six under. He is going to have to hole his second shot at the hardest hole on the course to take us into a three-hole play-off, which we are still not thinking about in this office.

  13. Thomas finishes -8published at 23:49 British Summer Time 13 August 2017

    Thomas (-8 after 18)

A couple of lads, wearing snap-back caps and baggy tees, are sat greenside with a cup of something cold and cheering on Justin Thomas. Oh, it's Justin Spieth and Rickie Fowler.

Thomas rolls up his par putt, knocking in a tiddler for a 68.

That, barring an unlikely eagle from Kevin Kisner on the last, is game over.

  14. Matsuyama finishes five underpublished at 23:47 British Summer Time 13 August 2017

    72 for Matsuyama

Matsuyama leaves it short with his chip, one hesitates to say he duffed it but the shot was only about eight yards and he still has three feet left. The wait for Japan's first male major champion is going to continue and he will have that pressure on his shoulders again at Augusta in eight months. He finishes with a 72, five under for the Championship.

Thomas has come through an almighty test here. It really is a very difficult course. I'm almost certain it will be enough to give him his first major title.

Oh my word... what is going through Justin Thomas's mind? My head would be feeling like it has been in a washing machine.

Not for the first time in recent holes, he marches up to the green to assess the lie of the land.

Back to his ball, a gentle swing and a sensible knock to the back of the green. He's about 12 feet away from the pin.

"JT, JT, JT!" is the Rocky Balboa chant from the fans around the 18th green.

  17. Postpublished at 23:41 British Summer Time 13 August 2017

    Thomas (-9 after 17)

Right then. Thomas isn't holding back in the bunker... he's got a mid-iron in his hand. Bold.

It's not a clean connection and he's ended up in the thickish rough short of the green on the right.

Justin's doing his best to create some late drama.

  18. Matsuyama at the lastpublished at 23:41 British Summer Time 13 August 2017

    -6 Matsuyama (17)

After taking a penalty drop Matsuyama pitches two feet from the flag but the ball bounds through the green into the rough. He's going to have to chip in for a par at the hardest hole on the course.
