No birdie for Rory, another to miss on the right side, and there is still a bit of meat left on the bone for the par.
The final hole is bordering on the 500 yard-mark again but it's just a drive and a very lofted iron, maybe even a wedge, for Rory. He'll have a birdie chance from around 10 feet to get back to level.
Phil beat his playing partner though, defending champion Jimmy Walker double bogeying the last for an 81.
Nicely rolled in from Phil, a touch of the cap to acknowledge the generous applause but his eight over total matches his worst round at the US PGA.
Mickelson fans have no birdie to enjoy today, he has raced his last chance by at the 18th and we could be looking at another dropped shot to take him to nine over.

The cut looks like being five over given another good day so this course looks like wreaking havoc.

This is one of Rory's favourite courses but he will have to do something pretty good tomorrow and at the weekend.
-2 Fowler; -1 Rahm; +1 McIlroy
We've seen a few scruffy chips today as the players have struggled with the slopes and the demonstrative Rahm has his arms outstretched in exasperation as he leaves it 20 feet short. It's another dropped shot for the Spaniard. Fowler makes par and McIlroy, who has hit nine out of 17 greens in regulation, bobbles a birdie chance wide so he stays plus one.
Mickelson +8 (17)
That sums up Phil's day. He has had 94 rounds in the US PGA and there has only been one round where he has not made a birdie. This par putt from four feet spins out of the hole and he is eight over now.
Two left for the feature group and a bit of a wait for them on the 17th tee, where there have only been five birdies all day, the third hardest-ranked hole.
-2 Rahm, Fowler; +1 McIlroy
A three-putt from Rahm, missing on the right from three feet and he drops to two under. Fowler sinks one from 15 feet to remain well placed alongside him at minus two.
Fitzpatrick +5 (16)
Former US amateur champion Matt Fitzpatrick, the Sheffield golfer who reminds me of a young Mike Atherton, has been in the water already today and racks up a double bogey to drop to plus five with a couple left.

The rough is like playing out of thick parsley.
That 16th hole has water all the way down the left side but Rory has bisected the fairway with a fabulous drive that has gone 320 yards, yet Rahm has somehow put it a couple of yards past that. Monster hitting.
American Patrick Cantlay holes out for eagle at the par 5 seventh to take him back to one over for the day.
Phil has a 40-footer for par at the 16th, it's a good putt but it doesn't drop and the great man is seven over.

The golf course has won so far on this opening day, no doubt about that. It may sound sacrilegious but I think the last couple of hours has rather fizzled out. They are making hard work of it.
-3 Rahm; +1 McIlroy
Another chip from Rory, from the rough over the bunker, is not up to his usual standard, 10 feet past and he misses the birdie chance, staying at plus one. Rahm rolls his into the front of the cup, however, and the sideboarded Spaniard is three under.

I think these greens have been French polished this morning.
