    Mickelson +5 (11)

It has all been very strange from Phil Mickelson today. He's looking a little subdued as he trundles round five over.

He went from the ridiculous to the sublime earlier with the below chip shot and has been forced into something similar on the 12th.

He pushes his tee shot way left into the trees and as a result has to skim the ball along the fairway up to the edge of the green.

That's a decent result from his lie.

    McIlroy -2 (10)

Wow. I said McIlroy crunched that last drive and he has indeed. He's got just a smidgen over 100 yards left on this 450-plus yard hole. Wowsers.

Hmmm. He may have just a short distance to the flag but Rory drops short with wedge in hand and the ball spins back off the front of the green. That's not the best. He follows it up with a decent pitch but there's still work to be done to save par.

Rory's going through the gears, he's not quite in top yet.

    McIlroy -2 (10)

Rory is well and truly on the charge. He's gone from +1 to -2 in no time with this run of birdies. How close can he get to leader Thorbjorn Olesen on -4 by the end of this round?

The Northern Irishman makes a cracking start to the par four 11th, crunching his drive and cutting the corner off the 462 yard hole.

  5. Hole in one!published at 21:46 British Summer Time 10 August 2017

    Luiten +5 (13)

    A hole in one!!

It hasn't been the best round so far from Joost Luiten but he's all smiles now.

His tee shot on the par three fourth takes one bounce, clatters into the flag and drops down into the cup.

That ace takes him to +5 after 13 holes. High fives all round!

  7. Three in a rowpublished at 21:41

    -2 Rahm, McIlroy, Fowler

The 10th, the longest hole on the course, playing 600 yards today. At least they have deigned to make this one a par five. Rory's drive is 322 yards and his second from 277 goes through the green. A neat chip trickles five feet by but he rolls it in for his third birdie in a row. Rahm's chip fails to make it up the slope and he can only return a par.

Maybe Phil could have Tottenham and England striker Harry Kane playing alternate shots?

Harry has got all the mod cons but BBC App users may need to click the link to see him having a bash at the golf simulator.

  9. Mickelson miserypublished at 21:31 British Summer Time 10 August 2017

This is difficult for me. I love Phil like a brother and seeing one of his bunker shots stay in the sand as opposed to spinning like a top next to the hole is not what I want. His next attempt hits the flagstick but doesn't drop and another one is going to go for Phil, who reached the turn in four over.

So is anyone going to catch Thorbjorn Olesen at four under? Rahm is only two back and American world number 107 Bud Cauley is just one off the lead with five holes to play.

Tousel-haired Lancastrian Tommy Fleetwood after an opening one-under 70 told BBC TV: "The course is brutal, it's a really tough test, anything par or beating the course is a good score. I'm really happy to be off the course one under. The greens are the toughest test because the course is long and then the greens are firm and slopey so there is no let-up, five hours of tough golf."

  12. At the turnpublished at 21:20 British Summer Time 10 August 2017

    -2 Rahm; -1 McIlroy, Fowler

A magnificent approach from Rahm very nearly bounces into the hole but Rory's second from 172 yards only just makes the front of the green. The caddie is not going to come under fire for that is he? No, it's a safe two putt for par but Fowler rolls in a 10 footer for birdie. Rahm's ball actually trickled on four feet but he calmly knocks it in for his third birdie.

England's Andrew 'Beef' Johnston has withdrawn from the tournament due to a shoulder injury.

He was seven over par after his round of 78 earlier.

It's a very relaxed three-ball between the talented feature group for the afternoon. In terms of carry through the air, Rory has got the edge, he has just sent it 304 yards, Rahm 296 and Fowler 290.

  15. McIlroy back under parpublished at 21:03 British Summer Time 10 August 2017

    -1 Rahm, McIlroy; level Fowler

A perfect little pitch from McIlroy and after carefully marking his ball and lining it up, he knocks it in from three feet to go back under par for the Championship. Fowler misses from five feet and he remains level. McIlroy and Rahm all smiles as they march on to the ninth tee.

There are few larrikins out there in the crowd who have been over imbibing I suspect, all manner of bizarre chants and cries as the players tee off. It doesn't affect Rory at the 346th-yard par four eighth and his drive is only around 20 yards short of the green, where I regret to say Mickelson is going to drop at least one more.

  17. Jim Furyk trickles a birdie down to the holepublished at 20:53 British Summer Time 10 August 2017

American Jim Furyk trickles a putt at the fifth green for birdie to get back to one over par after a bogey at the previous hole.

Paul Casey on BBC TV after his two-under 69: "It was quite good, especially after hooking my first shot into the trees. I struggled with my ball striking and I'm really happy with two under. It's a major, it's going to be tough but we've not played Quail Hollow before with bermuda greens. You have to be on top of your course management."

  20. After seven holespublished at 20:48 British Summer Time 10 August 2017

    -1 Rahm, level McIlroy, Fowler

My word Rahm has gone close on the greens today but the eagle effort from the edge of the green slips past. McIlroy's eagle effort from a similar range is perfect for line but curls to a stop a few inches from the cup. One back for Rory though and he's back to level, as is Fowler, who holes from four feet.
