Defending champion Jimmy Walker was seven over after 13 holes but he has just recorded his first birdie of the day at the par five 15th.
The 16th is another hole in excess of 500 yards that is a par four. Mickelson has had only one round without a birdie in his US PGA career but it looks as though it will be two because he's in the sand again off the tee.
Here's that moment I told you about earlier. It's a beauty. But he still made par afterwards.
Rory's right arm is outstretched like a traffic policeman and sure enough it is wayward, it gives a marshal a moment of concern but he dances out of the way and it comes to rest in the rough. There was a lovely moment earlier when one of Phil's wayward drives thudded into the rough and a young girl reading a book in glorious isolation lifted her head up briefly before returning to her paperback. Someone very close to me has very similar traits.

You have to be on your game at Quail Hollow or it will eat you up. This is not Phil's set-up here because of the penalising nature of the fairways.
-2 Rahm, Fowler; +1 McIlroy
Rahm rattles one from over 20 feet for a birdie and he's back to two under, Fowler brushes one in from 15 feet and he's also two under but i's a double bogey for Rory, missing from five feet to slip back to one over.
He has duffed his third shot from the rough next to the water as well and it has stayed in the thick stuff.
Oh Rory, it gets much worse. Straight left off the tee with a three wood and it bounds into the drink at the 354-yard par four 14th. Rahm is fortunate to catch the bunker otherwise he would have been in the soup as well.

Some players keep a putter for 15 years or more, others change it every couple of weeks, looking for a magic tool.
McIlroy -1 (13)
No! Rory does not like that. He pushes the ball to the hole and is up in an instant swishing his club in disgust. That's four shots on the par three and McIlroy falls back to -1, three shots behind the leader Thorbjorn Olesen.
A half smile half grimace in the direction of his new caddie and best mate Harry Diamond.
McIlroy -2 (12), Rahm -1 (12), Fowler -1 (12)
It's the par three 13th now for McIlroy, Rahm and Fowler.
A testing 208 yards and all three players put their first shots just off the green to the left of the flag.
McIlroy is first up with his second shot and that's a naughty bounce. His chip skids when it first hits the grass and ends up rolling on 15 to 20 feet beyond the flag.
More work to be done. Can McIlroy escape again?
Is this the highlight of the day? It is certainly Joost Luiten's highlight.
He's hit the first hole in one at the US PGA since 2013.

If they can get through the first day the greens should be better for the rest of the week.
McIlroy -2 (12)
The bounce is in the McIlroy walk. A tidy chip from the bunker and a decent putt and that's another par in the bag when the Northern Irishman was in a little danger.
The very top of the leaderboard is very static, filled with players who are already back in their hotel room, but Rory is looking dangerous two off the lead in a tie for sixth.
Mickelson +6 (12)
Deary, deary me. Things are not going Phil Mickelson's way. The American misses a short putt on the 13th and that's another chance gone. Groans from the crowd.
Groans too back on the 12th. Rory McIlroy put his tee shot in a difficult spot against the trees. He's able to get a decent hit and swing the ball around towards the flag but doesn't get enough bend and ends up in the green-side bunker.
Also on two under are Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, DA Points, Kevin Kisner and Ryan Fox.
This is one Graeme McDowell won't want to see again but we're going to ask our tecchies if we can, just to give us all some encouragement. He tries a bladed shot - ie hitting the middle of the ball with the bottom of the wedge like a putt - but it flops a few inches. He knocks in an impressive par putt though and the world 109 stays level midway through his round, as is Justin Rose.
Well, some of the outfits at Quail Hollow have been - shall we say - interesting.
Here's Kevin Na and John Daly.
McIlroy -2 (11), Rahm -2 (11), Fowler -1 (11)
Right then. A little pressure on McIlroy here as he has a testing putt for par after a perfect drive earlier on this hole.
It's a quick one that Rory hardly touches but safely nestles in the cup. A clench of the fist. Par saved.
Playing partner John Rahm does the same to stay with McIlroy on -2 but Rickie Fowler drops a shot and falls back to -1 with a bogey.
