  1. Final group at the 14thpublished at 23:16 British Summer Time 12 August 2017

Off with the sock and shoe and up with the trouser leg for Day, by the lake. It's not quite dear old Jean van de Velde but his challenge is going the same way.

Kisner is on the green at the par four but his putt for an eagle is 101 feet away. It's perfectly judged for speed again and he will have a five foot putt to take sole possession of the lead once more.

  2. McIlroy rues 'tough' conditionspublished at 23:15 British Summer Time 12 August 2017

    McIlroy (+4 after 18)

Rory McIlroy who is four over after his 73 speaking to BBC Sport: "It was sort of the same as the first couple of rounds. I have been struggling to get anything going.

"I was two over through six and that is not the start I wanted to get off to. If you start like that around here it is tough.

"It was OK. I battled well so hopefully I will sign off with a good one tomorrow. I have been trying to go for it (a low score). It is a tough golf course. Even today conditions are pretty tough."

  3. Kisner's rivals falter at the 14thpublished at 23:09 British Summer Time 12 August 2017

    -8 Kisner; -6 Matsuyama; -2 Day

Iron off the tee for Matsuyama, hand off the club again and it sails into the fairway bunker at the par four. It's another wretched shot from Day, veering left towards the lake.

It sticks on the bank in the lush grass, saved by yesterday's rain, but it's not going to be very inviting from there. They are handing it to Kisner. Looks like Stroud is the man he has to watch out for.

  4. New co-leaderpublished at 23:08 British Summer Time 12 August 2017

    Stroud (-8 after 14)

...we have a new co-leader. Chris Stroud does convert that birdie putt we mentioned earlier, lifting alongside Kevin Kisner at top of the pops.

Still no hint of a smile from the American..

    Fowler (-5 after 14)

Rickie Fowler will win a major one day. When that day is we don't know. If it is tomorrow then he'll probably need a birdie or two in the next few holes.

A huge cheer greets his successful, albeit aggressive, par putt on the 14th as it skims a good percentage of the lip before dropping.

    Meanwhile, in the group behind...

  6. Slow progresspublished at 23:05 British Summer Time 12 August 2017

    -8 Kisner; -6 Matsuyama; -2 Day

It is going to be another late one I fear, that paperback of mine is not going to get much attention again. The final group have been out there more than four hours and they have only just reached the 14th tee.

  7. After 13 holespublished at 23:02 British Summer Time 12 August 2017

    -8 Kisner; -6 Matsuyama; -2 Day

A 22-foot double breaking birdie chance for Kisner at the par three, it doesn't drop but if you're going to have a putt for par, a distance of two inches is very acceptable for the leader.

Day fails to find the green and makes another bogey, he has played the last five holes in four over. Matsuyama makes back-to-back bogeys and he is two behind.

    Stroud (-7 after 13)

I hope Chris Stroud is more fun on a night out. He looks miserable as he ploughs around Quail Hollow. Suppose it is his game face.

The American plays the percentage game on the short par-four 14th, not trying to drive the green, instead leaving himself with short pitch.

He plays it perfectly, a hop and a check leaving him with a birdie putt that my 34-handicapped nan would stick in with her eyes closed.

    McIlroy (+4 after 18)

Time for Rory McIlroy to contemplate what might have been over a cheese salad sandwich in the clubhouse.

The Northern Irishman was ranked among the favourites at Quail Hollow - a track where he has performed well in the past - but knocks in for a third-round 73.

That leaves him four over - 12 shots off the pace - and playing for nothing but pride tomorrow.

  11. Final group after 12 holespublished at 22:49 British Summer Time 12 August 2017

    -8 Kisner; -7 Matsuyama; -3 Day

This time Kisner misses. A nine foot par putt stays on the edge of the cup and that ends a run of 25 holes without dropping a shot. He retains his lead though as a chip and run from Matsuyama from the fringe grass for a par drifts by the flag and he also makes a bogey. It's a double for Day though and he is five behind.

    Fowler (-5 after 14)

Rickie on the 14th... his dink on sounds as sweet as a nut being cracked at Christmas. Ball trundles towards the hole, just veering off course in the final foot or so. No problem. A tap-in for birdie wipes out that previous bogey and lifts the American back within four shots of leader Kevin Kisner.

  13. Despair for Day at the 12thpublished at 22:44 British Summer Time 12 August 2017

I don't like the colour of some those clouds but it's still sunny at the moment. Not in Jason Day's world though, he has chipped out from under the trees and it has trickled to the very edge of a fairway bunker, leaving him an awkward fourth shot. This could be the end of his chances of another title. My chances on him in the sweepstake for round three leader went quite a while ago.

  14. Postpublished at 22:43 British Summer Time 12 August 2017

    DeLaet (-2 after 16)

This is getting ridiculous. No wonder Graham DeLaet's grin is wider than a hippo yawning. The world number 117 drains a monster of a birdie putt on the 16th.

    That's BIRDIE-EAGLE-EAGLE-BIRDIE in the 35-year-old Canadian's last four holes.

  15. Postpublished at 22:40 British Summer Time 12 August 2017

    Fowler (-4 after 13)

Rickie Fowler on the 14th tee, aiming to climb back aboard the birdie train. His next stop? Just short of the green on the 344-yard par four.

A decent dink on should get the world number 10 moving back north.

  16. Day challenge dwindlespublished at 22:38 British Summer Time 12 August 2017

"Caught a flier" says Day dejectedly. It has sailed into the human herbaceous border that is the gallery to the left of the 11th green. Another shot could go here at the par four 11th.

  17. Final group at the 12thpublished at 22:35 British Summer Time 12 August 2017

    -9 Kisner; -8 Matsuyama; -5 Day

Only three bogeys all week for Kisner and he has done nothing wrong so far today, apart from an unpleasant spit, as ponderous as his Californian drawl, which is unfortunately highlighted by the cameras.

But aside from the expectorations there will be great expectations with every passing hole that the 33-year-old can land his maiden major. Day is fading, another wayward drive clatters into the trees and he is in a share for fourth.

  18. Postpublished at 22:35 British Summer Time 12 August 2017

    Fowler (-4 after 13)

Rickie Fowler trudges off the 13th green after almost nonchalantly knocking in a tiddler. That was for a bogey five. The American drops five behind the leader.

  20. After 11 holespublished at 22:28 British Summer Time 12 August 2017

    -9 Kisner; -8 Matsuyama; -5 Day

Kisner is unflappable so far. Another perfect stroke and in the centre it goes for par. Matsuyama's birdie putt appears to go straight over the hole as if Dynamo Magician had been involved and he stays one behind.
