Patrick Reed made easy work of Augusta National on Friday, carding 66 to sign for his best round at the Masters by four strokes.

The American is tied for the tournament's fewest putts with 51, has 22 one-putts and has birdied all eight par-5 holes so far this week.

"Everyone wants to win, and if you don't believe you can win them, then you probably shouldn't be playing in them," said Reed.

"I believe that if I play the golf that I know how to play, that I can win majors.

"I have to go in and not get ahead of myself and go into Saturday and just take it shot by shot, hole by hole, like I've been doing."

That's wild from Jordan Spieth. The 24-year-old is muttering away to himself after a drive that drifts right, just about avoids a bunker and kicks on to settle among the pine.

No such hazard for Dustin Johnson - he leathers a second successive drive right into the heart of the fairway.

Another another group, another all-star cast.

2016 Open champion Henrik Stenson has the honour, grimacing slightly as his drive threatens to veer off left. It straightens out, however, ending up on the short stuff.

Next up.. the Rory Slam-chasing McIlroy. An anguished expression spreads over his face too, he's also pulled it. Ball crashes into branches... and pops out on the first cut. You lucky, lucky boy...

    J Spieth -4, D Johnson -3 (1)

Dustin Johnson casually strolls up to the green to retrieve his second shot, which pitched just off the back and nestled in the fringes.

Jordan Spieth will play first. He's a good 50 feet to the right of the flag, and rolls it up some way short - work to do for the 2015 champion.

World number one Johnson sends his birdie putt much closer. Knees bent, a searing expression of frustration cast across his face as he settles for par.

Spieth follows suit with a well-weighted putt to save par.

Tyrrell Hatton rarely looks happy with himself, but it's clear to see why he is annoyed now. The Englishman closes with two bogeys at 17 and 18, pushing him to a one-over 73 and ruining his chances of beating Augusta for the first time. Cheer up Tyrrell, you have another chance tomorrow.

Phil Mickelson has been trudging around the course with him, also bogeying the last to card a 74 and drop back to joint last on the leaderboard.

Rory McIlroy sits five strokes off leader Patrick Reed heading into Saturday's play, and was frustrated to not have made up more ground before the weekend.

The Northern Irishman started round two on three under but immediately dropped a shot with a three-putt. He then birdied the next two to briefly share the lead.

The world number seven made consecutive birdies on each nine but saw makeable birdie putts on the closing two greens slip by.

"I'm a little frustrated I'm not, say, seven under, but anything under par was pretty good," the 28-year-old said.

"The wind is not up that much, but it's enough to make it really tricky and the pin positions were tough, so it's hard to get it close."

    T Woods +4 (16)

Tiger's back to level par for the day.

He's never gone three successive rounds over par at the Masters, but was in danger of doing so here after a bogey on the par-five 15th.

But the four-time champion scrambles back for a birdie at 16.

    D Johnson -3

Dustin Johnson is vying for a Masters title, but also to hang on to his world number one ranking at Augusta.

The American has spent 59 weeks at the summit, but knows countryman Justin Thomas could overtake him with a good finish in Georgia.

Both share sixth on three-under par, some six strokes off leader Patrick Reed, but Johnson fancies his chances.

"I feel like I'm in a good position," he said. "There are some birdie holes out there. Conditions are tough, so you're going to have to play a good solid round. I'm in a good spot."

World number two Justin Thomas makes a solid start to his third round, cracking a drive perilously close to the bunker, but recovering to find the heart of the green in two.

Fellow American Tony Finau is alongside him today - who you will remember is lucky to even be playing after dislocating his ankle on Wednesday - pulls his opening drive left and is scrabbling to save par.

"Fore please, Jordan Spieth now driving..."

A little breeze ripples through the mint green shirt of the American before he clunks one down the centre of the fairway.

Dustin Johnson gives the patrons a little hand of appreciation after they applaud his introduction.

The world number casually slaps his drive up along Spieth's.

Jordan Spieth held a two-shot lead after Thursday's opening round, and all the signs were the American could be about to run away with another major.

The 24-year-old blamed a "brain-dead" start to Friday's play for him slipping down the leaderboard, but hopes being out of the spotlight might help his game this weekend.

"Would I have taken being in this position three or four weeks ago? Absolutely," said the 24-year-old.

"The wheels could have come off, but I made a great par save on the ninth to be able to go to the back nine with some momentum.

"To not be in the lead could bode well for me, allow me to go after some pins to get some shorter looks at birdie."

If you're a casual golf fan then the chances are you might not even have heard of Jon Rahm. (We know that sounds incredible to the diehards, but it is true...)

So you'll be even more surprised to know the 23-year-old Spaniard will become the world's number one player if he wins at Augusta this week.

Consistency on the Tour over the past couple of years has not transformed yet into the majors, where he has failed to earn a top-20 finish in four attempts.

"You don't need to play perfect to win at Augusta National just because there are so many ways to do," he says.

"You just need to find the way that's maybe best for you at the moment."

Since that early downpour the heavens haven't really opened at Augusta. Let's hope the forecast was wrong, not that the worst is about to hit the course. Still dark and damp out there, though.

Jon Rahm flies out the traps like Usain Bolt, going birdie-birdie to move up to tied sixth alongside Dustin Johnson and Justin Thomas.
