  1. Birdie for Fowlerpublished at 20:00 British Summer Time 7 April 2018

    R Fowler -5 (5)

Scrap that. Rickie Fowler has just broken free with a monster of a putt on the fifth. Roars echo around Augusta as the American hero sinks a 42-footer to move into outright third. And there's another loud cheer a couple of holes behind...

    P Reed -9, M Leishman -7 (1)

Patrick Reed is taking the scenic route down the second. A tee shot that floats into the sand, a jab out on to the fairway and finally an approach that whizzes beyond the green.

He's got two shots to play with the make par.

That pack on four under has stretched to seven players following Henrik Stenson's descent. Rickie Fowler has climbed into that group with an eagle on two, while vacation buddy Justin Thomas joins him after birdieing the same hole.

    J Spieth -4, D Johnson -4 (3)

Jordan Spieth sizes up the par-three fourth, puts club to ball and watches it soar through the Augusta sky before coming to an immediate halt above the bunker in the slightly longer cut.

Dustin Johnson directs his left of his playing partner, dropping on to the green before fizzing back a yard and resting 26 feet from the cup.

    J Spieth -4, D Johnson -4 (3)

How aggressive will Jordan Spieth be with this birdie putt? He rolls it up the slope, watches it just clip the cup and flutter on agonisingly by.

The American pops away for a sigh-inducing par.

Dustin Johnson fails to sink his birdie putt, too. The pair remain on four under.

    Paul Azinger
1993 PGA Championship winner from Augusta

Imagine the burden on McIlroy from now until he ever wins the Masters. He knows the magnitude of what winning would have on his life. But my eyes saw something in Rory this week and I wish I'd put my money where my eyes were. Maybe it's too tight for Tiger and Phil at Augusta now but not for Rory.

Unfortunately Stenson and Rory can't heed Woosie's advice.

Henrik Stenson is working hard to avoid a dropping shot on the second after pulling his tee shot left and having to hack to safety. He's on the green with a fighting chance of a par, but is unable to drain a putt from 11 feet.

McIlroy has a birdie putt from the opposite direction... it hasn't moved. McIlroy looks incredulous, almost laughing in disbelief.

Leader Patrick Reed is on the board. It took a nerve-settling, par-saving five-footer to keep his advantage at two shots from playing partner Marc Leishman, who also cards an opening par.

Playing the par fives is hugely important on this golf course, it allows you to make mistakes elsewhere.

    J Spieth -4, D Johnson -4 (2)

Dustin Johnson is enjoying life on the tee box. He natters away to Jordan Spieth on the walk down the third fairway to find his ball sitting pretty once again.

Johnson then flops his approach up to the right of the green and watches it spin back some 10 yards or so to leave him a birdie putt - one that will seem makeable to the world number one.

Spieth goes even closer! A wonderful wedge to get the patrons on their feet... nearly.

    T Woods +4, I Poulter +7 (18)

Tiger Woods and Ian Poulter exchange handshakes and smiles as they wrap up their third rounds. Woods gets another bogey to finish level for the day, Poulter scoring the same to card a 74. Poults, who worked a miracle to even get here, is propping up the field alongside Phil Mickelson.

    B Watson -4 (4)

Bubba Watson is quietly going about his business on moving day. Instead of filling the street with removal trucks, he's opted for a subtle rental van.

The American has crammed in successive birdies at the second and third to take him to four under.

Rory's standing hand on hips in the pine needles on the second. Photographers are lying in an army crawl position a few yards to his right trying to get the money shot.

The Northern Irishman has a clear path out to the safety, although a pink dogwood tree is going to get a lashing from his long iron on the follow through.

Rory's bulging biceps are strong enough to make a good contact, ball flying to the left of the green and leaving him with an achievable up and down.

  16. Birdie for Johnsonpublished at 19:39 British Summer Time 7 April 2018

    J Spieth -4, D Johnson -4 (2)

Dustin Johnson's approach has teed him up with a shot at eagle. Only four eagles at two so far this week...

A slow putt up the hill from 19 feet, it doesn't quite have the legs and instead the world number prods in for an early birdie.

Jordan Spieth, after a wayward drive, has also scrambled back for a birdie chance.

The hand's up, fingers spread an inch or so, the American demonstrates just how close that was to dropping - but it's par.

A couple of pars to begin their third rounds for Rory McIlroy and playing partner Henrik Stenson.

Rory's a little worried by his drive on the second, though... that's nearer the fourth tee than the second fairway.

    Well played, Jordan Spieth.

Having rattled his drive into the rough, the American recovers to give himself a good sight of the flag.

Anything you can do... Dustin Johnson is playing seamless golf. Right into the middle of the dancefloor for the world number one, 19 feet from home.

Beautiful from Rory McIlroy. The Northern Irishman crisscrossed the first with his opening two shots, but dinks a deft lob wedge up towards the pin from the opposite side of the green.

    Soft hands.
