Jason Day says the players out there can go very low. How low? Eight or nine under, he reckons. Tommy Fleetwood is almost at that mark already - and he has a chance to get to eight under on the 17th...

Reed is a fiery character. If he's like this today I dread to think what he's going to be like tomorrow.

    P Reed -11 (9)

Leader Patrick Reed struts up to the 10th tee after that fist-pump worthy birdie at the ninth.

He's eyeing a third birdie on the bounce... and sticks his tee shot on the fairway.

    R McIlroy -9, H Stenson -6 (10)

McIlroy has the putter out on the back of the 10th green. A big left to right swing, needs to be a delicate touch here. That's exactly what it gets as McIlroy, knees bent, fixes his glare on the back of the ball. Don't you dare keep moving. It grinds to a halt about four feet right of the pin, good effort.

McIlroy stands back and watches Henrik Stenson two putt for his four, then confidently steps up to knock in a par of his own.

Reed spent an inordinate amount of time on the practice green this week and though it's ball striker's paradise, those up and downs are everything.

Tommy Fleetwood has given himself a good look at a sixth successive birdie on the 17th. He teases an approach up to within 14 feet of the pin at the par four, an uphill putt to come...

    P Reed -11 (9)

    Oh my.

These pros are just desperate to outdo one another, but no one can top Patrick Reed at the minute as he extends his lead with another birdie at the ninth.

It's a beauty, too. The American rolls one right up to the cup from 25 feet, it hesitates for a moment, dangling on the edge, before taking one more rotation and dropping into the cup.

    That's 11 under and a two-shot lead.

    R McIlroy -9 (9)

Too much beef from Rory McIlroy on the 10th. He's through the back with his second shot. And as he hands his club back to his caddie there's a huge roar from just behind...

The only thing that could possibly dampen Tommy Fleetwood's spirits is the rain. Here it comes... brollies popping up around Augusta.

    T Fleetwood -7 (16)

FIVE on the bounce for Tommy Fleetwood. He is thriving in Augusta right now.

Beneath the long locks and scruffy beard there's a hint of a smile from the Englishman, who rolls in his birdie putt from seven feet at the 16th.

    What a streak.

    J Rahm -6 (13)

Jon Rahm signs a cross and thanks someone upstairs... he's just had some divine inspiration. The Spaniard rattles a chip onto the 13th green after taking a one-shot drop for landing in the drink, and fortunately sees the ball stopped in its tracks by the flag-stick. It was going through the back if that hadn't got in the way. A simple tap-in for par.

    R McIlroy -9 (9), D Johnson -5 (9), J Spieth -3 (9)

Rory McIlroy settles for a par at nine, and then takes his three wood to the tee shot at 10 - cracking it just into the first cut.

Jordan Spieth is fading a little, he's bogeyed the ninth to drop back to three under, while playing partner Dustin Johnson is keeping within touching distance of the leaders at five under.

When Rickie Fowler gets it going, the rhythm in his stroke and the freedom after impact is just a pleasure to watch. He's one of the greatest putters in the game today.

    R Fowler -7 (11)

Rickie Fowler has a good chinwag with his caddie as he lines up his approach on the 11th. It's not his second shot, though, it's his third. That's because he clattered his tee shot into the trees on the right and had to knock out to safety.

They've picked his club, picked his line, can he execute? Looks like it. He's about pin high, left of the flag, a testing putt up.

His putter has been a wand today... abracadabra! That's magic.

    T Fleetwood -6 (15)

    Oh, Tommy.

What a round. Fleetwood backs up that beautiful approach on the 15th by two-putting for his sixth birdie of the day, and fourth in succession.

All aboard, the Southport birdie train is steaming through Augusta.

I was waiting for Reed to give a finger wag back down the ninth fairway to wherever Rory is.

    P Reed -10 (8)

Patrick Reed must the coolest man in Georgia today.

He struts up to a nine-foot birdie putt and slots it right into the middle of the cup.

That takes him clear of Rory McIlroy in second... for the moment.
