Would this see Patrick Reed home and hosed? Not quite but it'd put him within touching distance of that swanky Green Jacket.

He goes for it, ball turning right to left at the death. Reed pursues his lips and 'Oooohs', tapping in for the three.

Rory McIlroy, who has slinked out of the picture, also makes a three.

It is disgraceful that they held up the leader of the tournament for that.

The 16th has not posed too many problems for the world's best today. We've even seen a hole in one courtesy of Charley Hoffman.

There's a slight delay as some fella comes on with a leaf blower, to get rid of the sand which Rickie Fowler has just splashed on to the green. I kid you not.

That causes a few chuckles among the patrons, but Patrick Reed remains focused, constantly checking his yardage chart while in deep convo with his caddie.

What's his tactic here? It ain't conservative. He goes for the flag, pitching and checking about 12 feet short.

  4. 'A nearly week'published at 23:10 British Summer Time 8 April 2018

    J Rose -6 (18)

England's Justin Rose conceded he had "a nearly week" after finishing six under par.

He told BBC Sport: "Even today I got some momentum going and saw some signs I was going to make some putts but at Augusta if you're one or two yards out you go from hero to zero.

"I find it amazing that the winner normally comes out of the last group because I think it's a golf course where a huge comeback is possible."

    R Fowler -13 (16), J Rahm -11 (16)

Rickie Fowler knows he still has an outside chance, even if he is relying on the unflappable Patrick Reed to start flapping...

He lashes a drive 286 yards down the 17th fairway, and watches Jon Rahm follow suit.

This hole is played entirely over water to a green secured by three bunkers. With the putting surface significantly pitched from right to left, an exacting tee shot is required to set up a reasonable birdie chance.

Standing ovation as Patrick Reed walks over to the 16th tee. Here's what lies ahead...

  9. Groans for Spieth bogeypublished at 23:04 British Summer Time 8 April 2018

    John Murray
    BBC Radio 5 live

You can hear the gasps from the galleries around the 15th green and 16th tee as Jordan Spieth's bogey was registered on the leaderboard. Reed heard them too and looked straight over.

He holes his short putt and there is support for Reed here.

  10. Par for Reedpublished at 23:04 British Summer Time 8 April 2018

    P Reed -15, R McIlroy -9 (15)

Routine for Reed is this putt. When he's not three and a bit holes away from his first major...

This boy shows no fear. Confidently into the middle.

What an anti-climactic way for a remarkable round of golf to end.

  12. Bogey for Spiethpublished at 23:03 British Summer Time 8 April 2018

    J Spieth -13 (18)

A share of the course record for Jordan Spieth if he can make this par putt and sign for a 63.

He won't be worrying too much about that right now, a small matter of a Green Jacket taking centre stage.

Spieth has putted immaculately all day. Nine birdies.

He coaxes what he hopes will be his final putt forward, willing it all eight feet up the slope, but it clips the edge of the cup and stays up.

A bogey at the 18th for the 2015 champion. His first of the day, and how costly could that be.

  13. Postpublished at 23:02 British Summer Time 8 April 2018

    P Reed -15, R McIlroy -9 (14)

Flag out for Reed's chip on the 15th. Nicely-weighted, down the slight slope. Ball casually saunters up to the hole, leaving him with a four-footer for par.

  14. Postpublished at 23:00 British Summer Time 8 April 2018

    P Reed -15, R McIlroy -9 (14)

Patrick Reed is short of the drink on the 15th. Anything other than what is now known as a 'Sergio' will do.

Safety first for the longtime leader, knocking in half a wedge to the back of the green.

Reed fancies an up and down from here but I'd suggest it isn't that straightforward. Especially when your heart is pumping 150 bpm...

    J Spieth -14 (17)

For the first time on Sunday, Jordan Spieth looks slightly nervous.

Faced with two mammoth bunkers cupping the green, he shoots right at the flag and watches his ball land slightly left before fizzing back on itself.

He takes his putter from the bag, strolls up to the green and raises it to the crowd at the 18th.

He faces an eight-foot putt for par.

  16. Postpublished at 22:57 British Summer Time 8 April 2018

    R Fowler -13, J Rahm -11 (15)

Jon Rahm has both hands covering his face on the 15th green. That's not a good thing. He misses his par putt and drops a shot for the first time in 11 holes.

That means a two-shot swing with playing partner Fowler, who converts his birdie putt to move behind Spieth and two behind Reed...

  17. Postpublished at 22:55 British Summer Time 8 April 2018

    Iain Carter
BBC Sport commentator at Augusta National

All of a sudden that jaunty stride of Jordan Spieth's is more of a trudge. He knows he has to get up and down for par.

  18. Postpublished at 22:55 British Summer Time 8 April 2018

    J Spieth -14 (17)

Spieth opts for a driver off the deck and scuttles his approach out of the rough, bouncing and bobbling its way up towards the green but settling some way short.

A famously reachable par five when the winds are favorable. A well-struck second shot must be played over the pond and away from the bunker that guards the green on the right. Gene Sarazen hit his "shot heard 'round the world" here when he holed a four-wood approach from 235 yards away for a double eagle in 1935.

In 1935, the 15th green had no greenside bunker. Bobby Jones firmly believed that all par fives on the course should be within reach of two shots by better players.

Birdie-birdie-eagle on the 15th for Patrick Reed so far this week. He'd settle for either one of those now I'd suggest...
