  1. Rose saves parpublished at 19:28 British Summer Time 17 June 2018

    J Rose +4, H Stenson +5 (2)

Justin Rose has left himself with a lot of work on to salvage par.

The Englishman chops his bunker shot out of the sand and it's a good 11 feet away from the pin.

He zips it confidently hole-bound, and drains it! Excellent save from Rose.

  2. Final pairing on the coursepublished at 19:27 British Summer Time 17 June 2018

    T Finau +3, D Berger +3

And so to our final pairing - Tony Finau and Daniel Berger.

When they finished their third rounds on Saturday afternoon I imagine they didn't expect to be teeing off in the last group on Sunday.

They were tied for 45th when they signed for four-under-par 66s.

    Anyway boys, how's the nerves?

Finau up first...iron in hand, middle of the fairway.

Berger, who was put with Andrew 'Beef' Johnston in rounds one and two (a USGA joke no doubt), also out with a long iron. He's also on the short grass, down the right so a slightly better angle into the green.

  3. Opening pars for Johnson & Koepkapublished at 19:26 British Summer Time 17 June 2018

    D Johnson +3, B Koepka +3 (1)

Superb weight on that 30-foot putt from Dustin Johnson, tickling it right up to the hole and then prodding in.

Brooks Koepka has a chance to take the lead here. The American rolls his birdie putt from six feet, but it breaks slightly right and just flirts with the cup before deciding not to drop.

    He'll remain at three over.

  4. Birdie for Simpsonpublished at 19:23 British Summer Time 17 June 2018

    W Simpson +5 (6)

Three birdies in six holes for Players Championship winner Webb Simpson.

Simpson is building nicely after back-to-back rounds of 71.

  5. 65 for Fowlerpublished at 19:23 British Summer Time 17 June 2018

    R Fowler +11 (F)

American Rickie Fowler posted a five-under-par 65 earlier - the lowest of the week - to finish at 11 over.

A sign of things to come for the leaders this afternoon?

Just the one bogey for the American world number seven.

As predicted social media was awash with comments on Phil Mickelson's two-stroke penalty yesterday.

  7. Mickelson 'insulted national championship'published at 19:21 British Summer Time 17 June 2018

The debate will rumble all day. Here's what Curtis Strange, the last man to win successive US Open titles, in 1998 & 99, had to say: "If my son, when he was growing up, had done what Phil Mickelson did, I'd have taken his clubs off him for two weeks.

"I've never seen anyone do that or even think about it. In your national championship. I don't know what to say.

"The bottom line is he hit a moving ball which is against the etiquette and sportsmanship of the game and insulted his national championship."

  8. Postpublished at 19:21 British Summer Time 17 June 2018

    D Johnson +3, B Koepka +3

Lovely approach from Brooks Koepka. The defending champion coaxes his wedge on to within a few feet of the flag.

DJ goes long. But it sticks to the shorter surface, way off on the outer reaches of the green.

The par-three second is playing at 264 yards...

Henrik Stenson finds his way on to the dance floor, enticed by the promise of a birdie, but Justin Rose will have to go digging.

The Englishman drags his tee shot and pops it into the bunker.

  10. Fitzpatrick birdiespublished at 19:17 British Summer Time 17 June 2018

    M Fitzpatrick +5 (8)

Another Englishman doing well today is Matthew Fitzpatrick. He is also at six over, after seven holes. His approach to the par-four eighth is sublime.

A bit of side-spin and his ball comes to rest six feet beyond the pin. Decent birdie chance for the 23-year-old Yorkshireman. He drains it - a third of the day so far. Up to +5 and two off the lead...

  12. Pars for Rose and Stensonpublished at 19:16 British Summer Time 17 June 2018

    J Rose +4, H Stenson +5 (1)

Long, 30-odd-footer for birdie for Henrik Stenson, but it slows up a putter's length from the pin. The Swede makes par.

Justin Rose leaves his a little short as well. Didn't quite hit it. And he taps in for an opening par.

  13. DJ and Koepka head outpublished at 19:15 British Summer Time 17 June 2018

    D Johnson +3, B Koepka +3

Dustin Johnson, world number one and 2016 US Open champion, struts up to the the first tee.

I reckon this pairing have got the majority of the Shinnecock crowd following them today.

He finds the fairway, as does last year's winner Brooks Koepka.

  14. Back-to-back birdies for Reedpublished at 19:14 British Summer Time 17 June 2018

    P Reed +4, K Aphibarnrat +6 (2)

Just over nine feet this time at the par-three second, but the same result for Patrick Reed.

Another par for playing partners Kiradech Aphibarnrat after missing his birdie chance from eight feet.

Justin Rose takes a pitching wedge to his second, popping it into the heart of the green and watching it stop dead. They're looking a little softer...

Henrik Stenson is slightly closer to the flag, but he overcooks it a touch and is relieved to see that come to a quick halt on the smooth stuff.

  18. Hatton movin' on uppublished at 19:07 British Summer Time 17 June 2018

    T Hatton +6 (3)

England's Tyrrell Hatton is making a move in the right direction. He knocks in a tiddler for birdie on the third after a terrific wedge.

He started on +7 and opened with two pars so is up to +6, just three off the lead. There are certainly birdies to be had out there.

  19. Birdie for Reedpublished at 19:07 British Summer Time 17 June 2018

    P Reed +5, K Aphibarnrat +6 (1)

Perfect start for Masters champion Patrick Reed.

Just misses a bunker off the tee, but his second is to within seven feet and the flat stick does the rest.

Par for playing partners Kiradech Aphibarnrat.

  20. 'I love my position'published at 19:05 British Summer Time 17 June 2018

Justin Rose whips his first tee shot on Sunday right into the heart of the fairway, a few yards to the right of Henrik Stenson's.

Rose admitted he found it tough on Saturday.

He described conditions as very hard and added: "The course was just a battle. There was no reprieve out there with any shots but I survived it and I've now got a good shot."

But the 2013 champion was confident heading into the final day.

"I love my position," he said. "Just being within the right zip code, it gives you a chance.

"There's a lot of us in the hunt, though. It's a very condensed leaderboard. All great players as well, in and around the lead.

"It's going to take a special round, but at least you have the opportunity."
