  3. Dire Duvalpublished at 15:32 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

    Duval +24 (2)

David Duval had an absolute stinker yesterday, with a fourteen on the seventh.

He's not exactly loving life today, either. The American bogeyed the first and triple bogeyed the second. Ouch.

Sergio Garcia sees his long-range birdie putt on eight on rink around the edge and stay on terra firma.

  6. Sixth birdie for Lowrypublished at 15:26 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

    Lowry -10 (10)

    Oh. My. Word.

Shane Lowry can do no wrong.

He should definitely buy a lottery ticket tonight (not that he'd need it if he wins this).

The Irishman taps a birdie putt down the hill on the tenth green. The ball hesitates, then curls to the right and drops in the hole.

He has a two-shot lead and cannot wipe the smile of his face.

  7. McIlroy opens with parpublished at 15:21 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

    McIlroy +8 (1)

Rory McIlroy with a snaking downhill putt of about 30 feet to try and pick up an opening birdie...not quite.

He will have to settle for par.

Rory traipsed down the first waving and nodding to the masses of fans packed either side of the fairway. On a side note, his white club towel is already covered in mud and grass stains.

There’s a washing powder advertising deal in that somewhere...

  9. Molinari opens with a parpublished at 15:16 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

    Molinari +3 (1)

A solid start to day two for defending champion Francesco Molinari as he lands his par putt on the first.

He probably needs to get down to +1 to make the cut.

    Lowry -9 (9)

Shane Lowry's birdie putt on the ninth stops a couple of centimetres to the right of the hole.

There were a few nods of appreciation as the group before McIlroy played the first.

“Go on Frankie”. “Have a good round, Scotty”. “I knew it was DeChambeau because of his hat!”.

But the volume just cranked up several notches when Rory got to the tee. In front of one of the patrons’ clubhouses the hustling and excitement was reminiscent of punters rushing to the tote at Cheltenham or Aintree. It’s getting lively!

  12. McIlroy off the teepublished at 15:13 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

    McIlroy +8

Rory McIlroy is given a hearty roar from the teeside gallery as the MC gives him a big build-up.

He steps up to his peg and lashes it down the middle.

Nothing wrong with that after he went out of the bounds on the same shot yesterday.

He has a hearty chuckle with his caddy as they shelter under a brolly. Nothing to lose today, no real pressure, let's just play and see what happens.

Remember 'pathetic fallacy' from GCSE English? Neither did I really, until I googled it again just now.

It is 'a literary term for the attribution of human emotion and conduct to things found in nature that are not human'.

Basically it is dismal and gloomy down in Portrush and Northern Ireland's flailing great home hope Rory McIlroy is on the first tee.

He is going to need an absolutely out-of-this-world round to have even a sniff of making the cut, currently projected at one over.

    Realistically he is heading home.

  15. Postpublished at 15:08 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

    Lowry -9 (8)

If his golf career goes awry, Shane Lowry could be a bomb disposal expert or something - he is so cool under pressure.

His second shot on the par-four ninth lands on the left side of the green and this should be at least a par.

The sign next to the entrance at the first tee reads “full”, such is the clamour to get a place to watch Rory McIlroy tee off. The Northern Irishman may have struggled yesterday, but he’s still pretty much the most popular man in town.

  17. Woods finishes on a bogeypublished at 15:07 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

    Woods +6 (F)

Woods leaves himself a long putt for par and he can't quite make it.

The 15-time major winner finishes on a bogey and frowns as he tips his hat to the crowd.

At least the fans in Northern Ireland got a couple of days of him.

    Woods +5 (17)

Tiger Woods looks at the ground as he's given a warm welcome onto the 18th green. For a while it looked like he might sneak into the weekend after a couple of birdies in a row, but that’s extremely unlikely now.

It was a disappointing day for defending champion Francesco Molinari on Thursday.

But there have been plenty of moves made already today, maybe the Italian can make his.

He's on the first tee now with Bryson DeChambeau and Adam Scott.
