He's playing brilliantly and is in complete control of his game. His iron play has been beautiful and putting has been excellent.

  3. Birdies galore for Willettpublished at 16:58 British Summer Time 20 July 2019

    Willett -7 (17)

Another birdie for Danny Willett, his second on the back nine and sixth in total this round.

He's seven under overall - three off the leaders - heading up to the 18th.

Another birdie will give him the course record - Rory McIlroy shot a 61 as a 16-year-old to set the old course record.

But for The Open, there were two new holes created, the seventh and eighth, to replace the 17th and 18th.

  4. Postpublished at 16:58 British Summer Time 20 July 2019

    Lowry -10 (5) Holmes -10 (5)

Shane Lowry makes birdie on five, JB Holmes saves par. Holmes briefly looked like he was in deep water.

"With the minimum of fuss he knocks it in. He's escaped with a par but we have a three-way tie for the lead," says Iain Carter on 5 Live.

  5. Koepka climbspublished at 16:55 British Summer Time 20 July 2019

    Rose -7 (7) Koepka -7(7)

Brooks Koepka two putts for a birdie on the seventh and he joins Justin Rose on seven under. That's birdies on both the par fives on the front nine for Koepka.

  6. Trouble!published at 16:55 British Summer Time 20 July 2019

    Holmes -10 (4)

    Iain Carter
BBC Sport golf correspondent at Royal Portrush

"Oh he's duffed it. He's duffed it."

Iain Carter reacts to J.B Holmes chip on the fifth.

The American drove behind a scoreboard and got a free drop but his chip is short and he's in the rough again. Now he plays his third and does so well, leaving five feet for par.

Remember, this is a hole you chase birdies on and Shane Lowry is sitting pretty with a birdie putt to come.

The Englishmen are going well. Time for the massive, long par-five seventh.

  9. Postpublished at 16:51 British Summer Time 20 July 2019

    Fleetwood -9 (6) Lowry -9 (4) Westwood -10 (6)

Lee Westwood can consider himself unfortunate on the sixth as his ball lands on the green, looks to be tracking nicely to the hole but catches a ridge and rolls off down a slope. His subsequent chip is smart and he'll make par.

Tommy Fleetwood has a putt from across the Irish Sea for birdie. It needs a right whack....oh my word... is it in? So close. Pars for both dudes.

Shane Lowry on the fifth, gentle chip needed on this short par four, sweet stuff... six feet left for birdie.

I'll let you know if he makes it.

    Rose -7 (6) Koepka -6 (6)

A grimace on Justin Rose's face. A horrible second shot is into the left-side rough and it is a particularly bad patch too. Plenty of work to do.

No such trouble for Brooks Koepka. Neat and tidy as he keeps it on the fairway and has the chance to put some pressure on his playing partner.

There is definitely a distinctive Irish roar. It's like what you hear at hurling or gaelic football. There's passion in it. You hear it when Lowry sinks a putt.

  12. Rock on Tommy!published at 16:41 British Summer Time 20 July 2019

    Lowry -9 (4) Holmes -10 (4) Westwood -10 (5) Fleetwood -9 (5)

All happening, all happening I tell thee.

Shane Lowry and J.B Holmes go within a whisker of birdie on four, both putts from range lick the lip and stay out.

Up ahead on five, Lee Westwood and Tommy Fleetwood know this is a hole you should birdie.

Westwood plays his chip nicely but it's perhaps a tad light and he can't make the 20 footer for a tweet tweet.

Fleetwood has no such problems as his chip almost goes in and he will be able to blow what's left in for birdie.

  13. Westwood's wonderlandpublished at 16:38 British Summer Time 20 July 2019

    Westwood -10 (4)

I think Lee Westwood has finished 81 majors.

Golf Digest's Mike O'Malley has thrown up his best finishes. Only one top five in the last five years.

    This, therefore, is sensational.

The sixth green sits perched up on a bank and you can see the new seventh below to the right.

As Justin Rose and Brooks Koepka were strolling up the par three there was an outbreak of applause and cheers that rippled across the barren hills between the holes and caught their attention.

It was caused by that chip-in Dylan Fritfelli birdie!

  15. Steady as they go for Rose & Koepkapublished at 16:37 British Summer Time 20 July 2019

    Rose -7 (6) Koepka -6 (6)

Justin Rose has already nailed one 40-footer and he has the chance to sink one again, this time for birdie that would put him eight under. His line is good but a little rise in the green is enough to roll the ball just wide of the hole. Par putt.

Brooks Koepka mirrors his playing partner with another putt for par. He's six under through six.

  17. Out of bounds for Hardingpublished at 16:34 British Summer Time 20 July 2019

    Harding -6 (5)

Justin Harding chips to the fifth, but skims past and over the back of the green. The ball drops off the back edge into a shallow ditch between two posts, and stops just ahead of a jumble of TV cables. Cables that stop his ball cascading down the cliff and on to the beach.

It's a double bogey for the South African.

  18. Another birdie...published at 16:32 British Summer Time 20 July 2019

    Westwood -10 (4)

My ears are ringing as there's a huge roar on the fourth green.

Lee Westwood smiles at his caddie and girlfriend after rolling home sweetly. That putt only had to be sent on its way, the green carried the pace and he shares the lead again. This scoring is a bit mental.

    It's all happening.

  19. Frittelli fights backpublished at 16:31 British Summer Time 20 July 2019

    Frittelli -6 (7)

A double bogey on the fourth looked to have really scuppered Dylan Frittelli's challenge but he's just rescued his front-nine run with an eagle three on the par-five seventh, chipping onto the green before a bit of backspin helped the ball into the hole.

He's one under for the day and six under overall, four off the pace.

  20. Bright start fades for Spiethpublished at 16:29 British Summer Time 20 July 2019

    Spieth -6 (6)

First bogey of the day for Jordan Spieth as he pushes his putt a fraction to the right. He birdied two and three, but now he's four shots off the lead.
