  1. Birdies galore...published at 16:26 British Summer Time 20 July 2019

    Lowry -9 (3) Holmes -10 (3)

That's just a lack of respect.

JB Holmes and Shane Lowry attack the pin on three to both land within a few feet of birdie on the par three.

This course suddenly looks gummy, there's no wind, no bite, no durability.

Holmes nudges his ball home, he leads on 10 under with back-to-back birdies. Lowry taps in, nine under.

Where is the wind? Where is the rain? Where is the famous links brutality?

  2. Harding birdies to go joint secondpublished at 16:23 British Summer Time 20 July 2019

    Harding -8 (4)

South Africa's Justin Harding, partnering Australia's Cameron Smith, snaffles a birdie from around four feet following a superb second shot to go joint second.

It's his second birdie in a row and he's tied with Fleetwood and Lowry.

  3. Busy up there...published at 16:22 British Summer Time 20 July 2019

Westy, J.B, Lowry, Sir Tommy of Fleetwood, Xander, Rose, Fowler, Spieth, the list goes on.

Here's the leaderboard in visual form.

  4. Lead tied again...published at 16:20 British Summer Time 20 July 2019

    Holmes -9 (2)

No sooner does Lee Westwood wrestle the lead in The Open does J.B Holmes tap home his birdie on the easy par-five second.

I say easy, I'd probably take 12 on it. He takes four and clips Westy's British wings.

  5. A roar for Rosepublished at 16:19 British Summer Time 20 July 2019

    Rose -7, Koepka -6 (4)

    Alex Bysouth
    BBC Sport at Royal Portrush

That was a roar that edged around the fourth green like a Mexican wave as each section got a sight of Justin Rose’s par-saving putt dropping bit by bit.

A firm fist bump from the Englishman. And a look of serious intent. That felt like a shot gained.

  6. Another birdie for Westwoodpublished at 16:18 British Summer Time 20 July 2019

    Westwood -9 (3)

Some of you may have questioned his bottle. No major wins in the centuries he's been playing the game, surely that's an issue.

Stop chatting such nonsense says Lee Westwood, enough. Iron off the third tee, eight feet for birdie. Stroked majestically home.

    LEADER!

  7. Dig the new breed?published at 16:16 British Summer Time 20 July 2019

We all want to see the greatest players but there’s a new breed of player coming through. You have to play your best at majors.

It’s disappointing they’re not here but there’s a great leaderboard and so many great players. Just because you play well normally it doesn’t give you the right to be here

  8. Hole halved in parspublished at 16:15 British Summer Time 20 July 2019

    Rose -7, Koepka -6 (4)

Super stuff from Justin Rose as he nails a tricky 40-foot putt on the fourth to save par. He remains one shot behind on seven under.

He's playing with world number one Brooks Koepka, who is sniffing a birdie from inside 10 feet. Nothing doing yet for Brooks. Par.

  9. Birdie for Westwoodpublished at 16:13 British Summer Time 20 July 2019

    Westwood -8 (2)

The second hole is the second-easiest on the course in terms of stats this week. You have to get at it and get at it good. Lee Westwood, step forward my man... chew up this drag like a Yorkshire Pudding on Sundays.

Nice touch from left of the green, nice short putt... birdie. You share the lead but never share your Yorkshire Pudding.

  10. Spieth bidding for share of leadpublished at 16:08 British Summer Time 20 July 2019

    Spieth -7 (4)

Jordan Spieth misses out on a chance for a share of the top of the leaderboard.

His birdie putt at four curls round but hangs agonisingly above the cup, so he stays at seven under.

  11. Home hopes rest with Lowrypublished at 16:07 British Summer Time 20 July 2019

    Holmes -8, Lowry -8 (1)

    Alex Bysouth
    BBC Sport at Royal Portrush

The sight of JB Holmes at the top of the leaderboard may be slightly underwhelming for the home fans, but that was a reception that says they’re certainly delighted to see a man from the island of Ireland heading out in the last group with him.

Now will Shane Lowry still be one of the leaders come the end of the day? His every drive, chip and putt will be spurred on by the hopeful Portrush crowd.

  12. Postpublished at 16:05 British Summer Time 20 July 2019

    Schauffele -7 (10) Lowry -8 (1) Holmes -8 (1)

Safe and sound through one for J.B Holmes and Shane Lowry as both two-putt for par.

There are a gaggle of geniuses closing in on them, including last year's runner-up Xander Schauffele. I must say, this kid has major winner written all over him and his latest swipe on the 10th lands within two foot of the pin. Birdie converted, one back.

That warm feeling on the back of your necks J.B and Shane... that's Xander and his pals.

  13. We meet againpublished at 16:04 British Summer Time 20 July 2019

It's not the first time Justin Rose and Brooks Koepka have been paired together at a major this year.

They played the final round of the US Open at Pebble Beach, with both hotly tipped to reel in leader Gary Woodland.

Koepka faired the better of the two, closing with a round of three-under par to finish three shots behind Woodland.

Rose started the day just one shot off the lead but fell away, finishing six back in a tie for third.

  14. Rose into the roughpublished at 16:03 British Summer Time 20 July 2019

    Rose -7 (4)

First blot on the copybook for Justin Rose as he hooks his tee shot on the par-four fourth. Its going left, and left, and into the rough, just avoiding the bunker.

Could have been better but could have been much worse.

  15. Park quietly in contentionpublished at 16:01 British Summer Time 20 July 2019

    Park -6 (14)

Sang-Hyun Park could be in contention tomorrow if he can finish off what's been an excellent round so far. He sinks his fifth birdie of the day at the par four 14th, having started Saturday at one under.

You want surreal? Well, here it is. JB Holmes has just shot 68 to go with his 66 from Thursday and at this stage of the day he leads the Open Championship. He comes in to talk and, sure, there's chat about his round, his game and his aspirations, but mostly the talk is about his dog, a goldendoodle by the name of Ace. Man, he loves that dog.

"He sleeps with us in the bed, he's part of the family." He's not here in Portrush. That's a blow. "My son is not here and my dog is gone. We FaceTime the son. Ace hears our voice, but he doesn't much like the phone."

You sense that Holmes is happier talking about Ace than he is about golf. He got him at an auction. Five thousand bucks and he brings him everywhere on the PGA Tour. "He's been on hundreds of planes. I don't know how many, but a bunch."

A golf question now. What keeps him from winning more tournaments? Holmes paused for a second before answering: "Go back to the dog questions."

  17. Postpublished at 15:58 British Summer Time 20 July 2019

    Holmes -8, Lowry -8

Contrast on one as Shane Lowry's ball lands on the green, 30ft or so from the stick. Roars go up, boisterous cheers. J.B Holmes follows him and is a bit further away on the green. Just one solitary shout of "go on J.B" and that's it. It's obvious who the crowd are behind.

Have they not heard about J.B's dog? More on that next...

  18. 'Lowry needs a plan'published at 15:55 British Summer Time 20 July 2019

    Lowry -8

    Thomas Bjorn
European Tour player and BBC pundit

Shane Lowry’s first 10 holes were amazing but the excitement got a little bit to him in the end and he will be trying to relax at home and lay out a plan.

He has to stick to that plan because the last few holes here are very difficult. He has the quality to play well but has to stick in there.

  19. What a start for Tommy...published at 15:54 British Summer Time 20 July 2019

    Holmes -8, Lowry -8, Fleetwood -8 (1)

Plenty happening on one as our leaders J.B Holmes and Shane Lowry tee off. Lowry pushes into light rough, Holmes up the middle.

Up on the first green, Lee Westwood has 30ft for birdie and just sends it up close... to Fleetwood, who is close in.... looks good... looks good.... drops. Perfect pace, perfect line.

A big birdie and a three-way share of the lead.

  20. Rose risingpublished at 15:51 British Summer Time 20 July 2019

    Rose -7 (2)

Thumping approach shot with a three iron from Justin Rose, finding the green from over 250 yards. He then two putts for a birdie and he moves up to seven under. One shot back now...
