There'a a touch of luck for Jordan Spieth at the 174 yard third - his tee shot bounces off a steep bank off the edge of the green and sets up a decent birdie chance from about 12 feet - which he takes with relish.

  2. Danny's comeback gathers pace...published at 15:50 British Summer Time 20 July 2019

    Willett -6 (12)

    Surely not?

Danny Willett, you know, the guy who won the Masters, is playing like he's back at Augsuta in those halcyon days.

He rolls home a fifth birdie of the day and is now six under, right in the mix as things stand. He has six holes to go but if he can pick up another couple then who knows.

Willett got himself up to world number nine a few years ago but fell lower than 450th last year. He's now 75th and looks like he's heading upwards.

  3. Spieth birdies the secondpublished at 15:44 British Summer Time 20 July 2019

    Spieth -6, Putnam -4 (2)

The 2017 Open champion knocks in a short-range birdie at the par-five second to move a place up the leaderboard. But playing partner Andrew Putnam bogeys the same hole and slips to -4.

  4. And off they go...published at 15:42 British Summer Time 20 July 2019

    Westwood -7 Fleetwood -7

Westwood looks down the stretch, 421 yards. He goes with iron and it's safe. Fleetwood, blue cap, looks good, swings good, five iron, right up the middle. Off they stroll, much to play for...

It was going well for Byeong-Hun An until he missed a short putt for par to record his first bogey of the day. But the South Korean is still out in 33, three under for the day.

Look at that glare. A man on a mission.

Tommy Fleetwood is on the first tee. I can't tell you if he's wearing this shirt again as he's kept his jumper on. He took the jumper off yesterday and wow, the world stopped when this mayhem was revealed.

Big day for Sir Tommy of Fleetwood, big day. He's alongside Lee Westwood of course, who has his girlfriend on the bag.

Prof David Owen: Rose & Koepka is a potentially brilliant pairing - will they spur each other on? If so, could be a real 'moving day'.

There’s a real buzz around this Justin Rose and Brooks Koepka pairing. Plenty of fans jostling to get a sight of 2013 US Open winner Rose and the American world number one Koepka.

You’d fancy one or both to make a run here in prime scoring conditions.

  9. Steady startpublished at 15:36 British Summer Time 20 July 2019

    Rose -6, Koepka -5 (1)

Justin Rose and Brooks Koepka get their rounds up and running with steady pars on the first, neither taking any early risks. There's a good crowd following these two, unsurprisingly.

He talked about the fact that he was just going out to enjoy himself. Taking the pressure off has obviously helped. It reminds me of when his good mate Darren Clarke won The Open in 2011. You never know.

    Westwood -7 (15:40)

Lee Westwood being in contention when he’s running out of chances to win a major would be a very popular champion. He’s one of the best players in the world not to have won a major championship and from the heart I would love to see him lifting the Claret Jug on Sunday.

He has all the qualities, he’s so good tee to green but sometimes his putting on the green lets him down. He’s putting well this week and there’s no reason why he can’t be standing there with the trophy on Sunday if he can keep that form going

Now, every major we play a fantasy golf game with about 60 friends and family. Pick six players from different categories and your top three’s combined score gives you your points.

My picks have a tendency to fall away spectacularly on Saturday and Sunday, or just fail to make the cut completely - like this week. To make matters worse in the race for family bragging rights my mother-in-law currently leads the way with Spieth, Westwood and Van Rooyen.

So sorry Erik, but I’m hoping you hit something like Rory’s Thursday morning form...

On a serious note, he’s out with fellow South African Dylan Frittelli, who probably didn’t expect to make The Open start list never mind still be here at the weekend. He won a first PGA title at the John Deere Classic last weekend to bag a late spot and has carried that hot streak to Northern Ireland with him.

After making just five fairways yesterday Jordan Spieth will be hoping for better today. He's just got his third round up and running, starting the day three shots off the lead. A par at the first for the 2017 champion.

Yesterday, Tim Henman and Brian O’Driscoll popped into the Swing Zone to meet 14-year-old Rory - he is a keen golfer and has Cerebral Palsy so strikes the ball one handed.

That was the challenge for Tim and Brian as they took Rory on in the spectator village, where the Golf Foundation has been hosting tri-golf events as a way of encouraging youngsters to take up the sport.

The aim was to chip the ball and hit targets on the wall, but the sporting stars were no match for Rory as his wedge proved hotter than namesake McIlroy’s putter on Friday.

    Noren -5 (4), Rahm -5 (2)

Sweden's Alex Noren sends down a long birdie from the edge of the undulating fourth green. The pace was such that had it been off target he'd have flown past the hole - but it rattles in!

Two holes back, Jon Rahm misses an eagle chance but makes no mistake with the birdie attempt from close range to also go to five under.

    McDowell -2 (68)

The locals enjoyed this one. Home favourite Graeme McDowell enjoyed a strong finish to his round.

After a birdie at the 17th he hit a brilliant approach at the last to three feet to briefly move into the top-30, having been in the third group out in the morning having just made Friday's cut on one over.
