So 17 players are within four shots of leader Dustin Johnson on nine under.

The Americans biggest challengers could come from the group of experienced players including Paul Casey, defending champion Brooks Koepka, Justin Rose and Jason Day.

Or perhaps young guns Scottie Scheffler, Cameron Champ or Collin Morikawa might spring a surprise.

Be sure to join us again for what promises to be one of the most thrilling climaxes to a major in years.

It's a shame there won't be crowds at Harding Park to see it.

  5. My major experience will help tomorrow - Johnsonpublished at 02:51 British Summer Time 9 August 2020

Dustin Johnson has won one major so far - the US Open in 2016 - and he's put himself firmly in contention for a second with a round of 65, including a personal best of eight birdies.

"I putted really well, that was the key," he said. "But I hit a lot of good shots to give myself some good looks because the flags are tucked and the greens are firm and fast. I did hit a lot of quality iron shots.

"Tomorrow I definitely need to hit some more fairways because it's really tough playing this course from the rough, and the bunkers too are tough.

"I definitely have experience in this situation, which will help tomorrow. I've been in the hunt a bunch of times in a major, and I've got one major, so having that experience will be beneficial. I'm still going to have to go out and play really good golf."

    The final two.

Li Haotong strikes a poor drive from the 18th tee but he looks to have avoided the trouble on the right. He is back at five under with playing partner Tommy Fleetwood, who makes a better job of his shot.

Justin Rose finishes with par which should have been a birdie had he shown more conviction with his putt at the last - he finishes on six under.

Playing partner Brooks Koepka sinks the birdie - as expected - seven under and only two behind leader Dustin Johnson.

It could be a heck of a tussle between them on Sunday.

Jason Day is wearing the 'oven gloves' - it's getting nippy out as the evening sets in in San Francisco.

Li Haotong drops one more at the 16th - five under, having started the day at eight under before moving up to nine under.

Cameron Champ is half an inch from making a birdie at the last. Nevertheless, it's a 67 and eight under overall - what a superb display from the Sacramento-born 25-year-old.

Three pairs left on the course.

Brooks Koepka misses a birdie putt by a width of one of those leaves on the many trees at Harding Park.

Brooks Koepka's hopes of a 'threepeat' are falling apart.

He goes from rough to rough on the edge of the green. An attempt to pitch the ball out sees him only make a couple of feet.

He's on six under - he won't remain there.
