  1. Tommyland in Wisconsin?published at 19:04 British Summer Time 24 September 2021

    Thomas & Cantlay v Fleetwood & Hovland

Tommy Fleetwood tees off in the Ryder Cup without his best mate Francesco Molinari, but who wouldn't want to play with Viktor Hovland?

We had Moliwood in Paris, but we have Tommyland in Wisconsin?

Tyrrell Hatton is well up for this! The Englishman knocked it stiff at the first and he's got about four feet left for a birdie at the par-five second after an excellent third from 80 yards.

    More of this please, Tyrrell!

Scottie Scheffler has around six feet for his birdie, though, so we could be looking at another half in birdies in this match.

  4. 'I'm not unhappy'published at 18:59 British Summer Time 24 September 2021

Europe captain Padraig Harrington says he's not changed his fourballs pairings given what happened in the first session.

"We had a plan, we stuck to the plan," he said. "I thought the players played well this morning. That's matchplay. We are hoping for a big afternoon.

"They did play well today, so I'm not unhappy with that. They have done their job. It wasn't their morning. Let's hope it's their afternoon."

It's going to be fascinating to see how Tommy Fleetwood goes. Viktor Hovland has become a talismanic figure - the players were telling me what a character he is.

It is going to be an absolitely crucial match from a European point of view as they try to overturn this deficit.

    Johnson & Schauffele A/S Casey & Wiesberger (2)

That's right on the money from Paul Casey at the par-three third, just nipping past the flag to leave a putt of 15 feet or so.

Until of course a loud roar greets Dustin Johnson's ball landing dead three feet from the hole.

All four balls on the green.

  7. Finau from distancepublished at 18:55 British Summer Time 24 September 2021

    Finau & English A/S McIlroy & Lowry (1)

Stop that Tony Finau! He's drained a monster from almost a different zip code for a birdie three on the first - that's a gut punch to Europe who looked favourites to win the hole.

But Shane Lowry keeps his cool to drop his birdie putt and that's as good a half as you'll see this week.

    Johnson & Schauffele A/S Casey & Wiesberger (2)

Paul Casey tries to carry to the green on the 593-yard par five second but he's miles left and in a whole raft of trouble.

That's how it's done...Bernd Wiesberger nips a seven iron into around 10-12 feet but can't knock his birdie putt in.

DJ’s third at the second doesn’t have the spin he's after and runs on to the back fringe. Still he'll have a birdie putt, which whistles past.

Pretty much only two balls in play here. Xander Schauffele is having one - finding the sand with his third and duffing his fourth from a dreadful lie.

    All square it stays.

I keep getting messages in a WhatsApp group I'm in from a golf society I play with called the 'Albion'. It's the annual outing this week and they're down in the east Midlands and sounding like they're having a lot of fun.

Clearly I had other plans this week.

What would you have chosen? Thumbs up for work trip to the Ryder Cup. Thumbs down for weeked away with golf society.

    Finau & English v McIlroy & Lowry

Our latest fourball all get away safely, always amazes me how they manage to hit the ball so sweetly given the noise and the nerves.

There could be a lot of good golf in this group, and hopefully for Europe the Irish eyes will be smiling come the end of it.

Scottie Scheffler's birdie effort slides just past the hole! That was a great try.

No dice for Jon Rahm, either, but DeChambeau drains his and concedes Tyrrell Hatton's so we're all square after one!

This is going to be a fun match.

Ever wondered how fas the heart would be pumping if you were stood on the first tee of a Ryder Cup?

Now we know thanks to the American television coverage shown here in Whistling Straits media tent.

It tells us Tyrrell Hatton's heartrate was beating at 123bpm, according to the monitor the Englishman is wearing.

The resting heartbeat for a bloke his age is usually between 70-80bpm.

Even the world's best golfers are human. Although I still reckon Collin Morikawa's barely flickers.

    DeChambeau & Scheffler v Rahm & Hatton

Tyrrell Hatton jumps straight into the action with a stunner into the opening green. That's a guaranteed birdie.

Jon Rahm clips a low one in. It's not as good as Hatton's, but the Spaniard will have a good look for his three.

Scottie Scheffler can't follow suit, though, coming up well shy from the middle of the fairway.

But here comes Bryson! Presumably after apologising to the spectator he struck with his drive, he clips a wonderful pitch to around 10 feet.

He's not all about the booming drives, you know...

    DeChambeau & Scheffler v Rahm & Hatton

Jon Rahm, fresh off his foursomes win alongside Sergio Garcia, smokes a cracking drive down the first. Tyrrell Hatton - who played in both fourballs sessions (won one, lost one) in 2018 - flies his drive down the right, but still looks in decent shape.

Now it's Scottie Scheffler. Yep, wallops it down the middle.

And now for Bryson DeChambeau. He's been 'speed training' in preparation for the long drive competition he's competing in on Monday, but he's lashed this one into the crowd - and it strikes the leg of a spectator.

    Not his best...

Not sure if the inspiration is Van Damme or Rambo - any ideas? - but it is unmistakeably America's own age-defying action hero Phil Mickelson.

  19. Baptism of fire for Wiesbergerpublished at 18:30 British Summer Time 24 September 2021

    Johnson & Schauffele A/S Casey & Wiesberger (1)

    John Murray
    BBC 5 Live commentator

Xander Scauffele holed that from 20 feet for a birdie. It was very much the Schauffele of this morning.

The pressure went straight on to Bernd Wiesberger - a baptism of fire but he knocked his putt right into the middle of the hole to ensure it was halved.

    Johnson & Schauffele A/SCasey & Wiesberger (1)

Rookie Bernd Wiesberger has come up smelling the roses on the first zipping his approach in to almost gimme range.

Paul Casey has a longish putt for birdie from 35 feet or so, which he runs up to a couple of feet. That'll be conceded.

Dustin Johnson goes flag hunting but sees his ball skip off the putting surface before chipping back past the pin. He's rescued by a superb long-range putt from fellow American Xander Schauffele, which finds the heart of the cup and puts some early pressure on Wiesberger.

The Austrian drops his in no bother.
