Ian Poulter had a birdie putt at the 15th but it was just inches short and that was that, match conceded.

The rookies Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele have got their first Ryder Cup point and they have beaten the veteran pairing of Rory McIlroy and Ian Poulter.

Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele put Rory McIlroy and Ian Poulter out of their misery on the 15th.

The European pair were five down after five holes and have now lost their last two Ryder Cup matches together 5&3 and 4&3.

    2UP Koepka & Berger v Westwood & Fitzpatrick (16)

Berger misses the first match point for the USA as he dribbles a 12-footer down towards the hole - it was to win it but he settled for not missing it by too much and with that half they're now 2UP with two to play.

It's this stage of the match now where Westwood and Fitzpatrick need to just swing for the fences and go for broke - the last two holes here are testing and anything can happen.

It's been a decent fight by the Europeans but this team of former college team-mates looks solid.

  5. Europe aiming to shatter the American dreampublished at 17:12 British Summer Time 24 September 2021

With up to 40,000 home fans expected daily at Whistling Straits, and virtually zero European support because of tough US travel rules, there is a partisan atmosphere in Wisconsin.

American patriotism was already clear around the course during this week's practice rounds - illustrated by fans wearing colourful clothing with stars and stripes, along with supportive chants of 'U-S-A, U-S-A' - and has amplified since the action started earlier today.

"Most of the focus for us coming in is the fact that it is going to be 90/10, 80/20 of American fans," says European captain Padraig Harrington.

"As I've said all along, Europe would rather play in front of 40,000 Americans than zero fans. But it's going to be interesting."

The most in-form player at Whistling Straits? The American has shot in the 60s in 15 successive rounds and was named PGA Tour player of the year after four wins this season.

And he reasserts some authority on the 14th, pushing his ball close before Rory McIlroy misses his birdie putt.

Cantlay makes the US dormie, four up with four holes to play.

Might have to adjust that points stat very shortly!

So the first point is in the bag for Europe - let's hear what Sergio Garcia and Jon Rahm, had to say, talking to Sky Sports:

Garcia: "It felt great. I knew who I had on my side and I wouldn’t change him for anyone. He made every putt he had to make.

"It was a good match and we had to play very well. Very happy to get a point for Europe."

Rahm: "I think you were feeling and seeing what we were feeling. I knew my job was going to be putting and we made a couple of putts at the right time."

Sergio Garcia has equalled Sir Nick Faldo's record for matches won at the Ryder Cup.

    • 23 matches won: Sir Nick Faldo & Sergio Garcia
    • 22 matches won: Arnold Palmer
    • 21 matches won: Bernhard Langer

The Spaniard has won 26½ points in total. Not bad eh.

    3&2 Johnson & Morikawa v Casey & Hovland (F)

The punch of the fist from the rookie. Dustin Johnson and Collin Morikawa take the point on the 16th - it is one point apiece now to Europe and the USA.

  11. Johnson & Morikawa seal first American pointpublished at 17:02 British Summer Time 24 September 2021

    3&2 Johnson & Morikawa v Casey & Hovland (F)

The par-five 16th is a must-win hole for the Europeans, but with Viktor Hovland finding the rough on the right with his drive, Paul Casey turns his fairway wood over and it's down in the sand, short and left.

Collin Morikawa steps up. He's perfectly placed in the fairway and pings his second to the left portion of the green.

Hovland takes too much sand with his third and leaves Casey with a 25-footer.

Johnson has an eagle putt to win the match, but he races it past.

Over to Casey, but it drifts by on the left. Collin Morikawa has the chance to clinch America's first point, and he duly obliges.

Morikawa and Johnson carded seven birdies in 16 holes. In foursomes, that's hard to live with.

It's 1-1 after the first two matches.

  12. Westwood misses outpublished at 16:59 British Summer Time 24 September 2021

Westwood has a putt to win the 15th, from about 10 feet, but guns it through the break and in the end leaves Fitzpatrick with three feet for the half.

The American crowd have a rather startled reaction when Fitzpatrick slots the ball home - leaving the flagstick in, which I've not yet decided if I like or not.

Anyway, USA still 2UP with just three to play.

Tommy Fleetwood is going through his paces on the putting green, which is tucked away behind the first tee grandstand.

After sitting out this morning, we always knew he was going to play this afternoon. So one question left: who’s the Englishman going to play alongside?

Shouldn't be too long before we find out the fourball selections from Captains Stricker and Harrington.

Poor old Jordan Spieth has a vertical wall of grass to deal with. The whiplash effect has sent him hurtling back down the bank but it's extraordinary.

Now. There is pressure on the Spaniards!

We have a match ladies and gents.

Xander Schauffele and Rory McIlroy both play superb wedges into the par-four 13th and we have two short-range birdie putts coming up.

Ian Poulter drains the first and Patrick Cantlay sinks his under a touch of pressure for possibly the first time today.

Justin Thomas sent the ball up into the sky - it came off the bank, all the way across the green, over the railway sleepers and into deep trouble!

Sergio Garcia has done exactly what he had to do.

Hello. A wayward US tee shot could well have put the seal on a fine European performance from Jon Rahm and Sergio Garcia.

Justin Thomas took his time over that but sees his ball bounce off the putting surface into the long wispy stuff with a horrible lie up a steep facing slope.

Garcia hits the right edge of the green with a textbook shot.
