Wisconsinites have proved to be very friendly hosts this week and are immensely proud the Ryder Cup is being hosted in their state.

Whistling Straits was once a desolate former US Air Force training facility before local billionaire Herb Kohler transformed it into an Irish-inspired, internationally-renowned golf course.

US captain Steve Stricker, who himself hails from the upper midwestern state, hailed plumbing magnate Kohler for his vison and said hosting the Ryder Cup had put Wisconsin "on the map".

Liam Haggen and Steven Young, both from Cedarburg - a town about 20 miles north of Milwaukee, agreed with Stricker's sentiments.

"After the global pandemic, it is awesome to be back watching golf live again. It's such a cool event. The atmosphere is going to be amazing," said Liam.

Steven added: "This is arguably the biggest sports event ever happened on Wisconsin soil so it is awesome."

  2. McIlroy & Poulter win their first hole of the daypublished at 16:16 British Summer Time 24 September 2021

    4UP Cantlay & Schauffele v McIlroy & Poulter (10)

That's a tad embarrassing for Patrick Cantlay. The American makes a rare mistake but what a mistake, duffing his chip on the 10th and watching it trickle back down the hill from the putting surface past him.

Xander Schauffele, with putter out and on the green walks back down the slope, though he needn't of bothered.

Rory McIlroy sinks a shot putt to win the hole for Europe.

No problem for Collin Morikawa and it is three up for him and Dustin Johnson.

Clear water now between then and Paul Casey & Viktor Hovland.

A slight misjudgement from Sergio Garcia means an opportunity for the Americans.

Justin Thomas is ready to go for his second shot with just a wedge. He span it back towards the hole and straight away you can hear the cheers and as he put it within 10-11 feet of the cup.

Chance to make it really interesting for the closing stretch.

    Thomas & Spieth v Rahm & Garcia 2UP (13)

Sergio Garcia's approach at the 14th lands a bit short and spins sideways towards the fringe.

Justin Thomas has a similar looking shot for the hosts but takes his time as the wind picks up a bit.

Now here we go....that's not bad at all. The American lands it past the hole and spins it back, pin-high. It's not a gimme but it'll go down as a decent chance to pull another hole back.

    2UP Koepka & Berger v Westwood & Fitzpatrick (11)

Another momentous birdie for the Americans and they extend their lead at the 11th courtesy of their fifth birdie of the day.

Lee Westwood and Matt Fitzpatrick are well up against it now.

It definitely feels like we're in the middle of a big American wave of momentum right now. As it stands they're looking good for a 3-1 lead after the first session.

They led 3-1 after the opening session at Le Golf National in 2018 before a European whitewash in the afternoon foursomes. Doing that again will be a tall order for Padraig Harrington's side.

At least it didn't get any worse for Rory McIlroy and Ian Poulter. They badly need to win a hole.

The have definitely struggled to live up to their star billing, so far for Europe.

What a tee-shot from Dustin Johnson on the par three 12th. The most difficult green on the course - the narrowest strips of grass - and Johnson stops it dead three feet from the pin.

Puts pressure on rookie Viktor Hovland - he settles himself over it... and it's a great shot from Hovland - 20-25 feet for Europe - but Johnson's shot was so sublime.

The pro-American support was ramped up as Morikawa/Johnson and Casey/Hovland headed down the ninth.

The tee is nestled in-between a massive corporate tent - where punters hang over the rails with beers in hand - and an acute-angled corner where the first and eight greens are also positioned.

Punters three-deep lined most of the hole, with Casey encouraged to “go for the bunker” on his approach.

The grandstand to the left of the green - a prime spot with a view of the 18th from there, too - is packed with red, white and blue-wearing home fans.

More colour than the paint aisle in the local Home Depot. And the sight of DJ striding towards the green sparked another chant of “U-S-A”. You know the one.

We find Rory McIlroy on the ninth - he sends it in high trajectory but not quite what he wanted. He will have to go up and over a ridge to get to the pin.

Xander Schauffle finds the green and over the ridge.

Two tough birdie putts to come.

    2UP Johnson & Morikawa v Casey & Hovland (11)

Dustin Johnson is feeling it. After teeing up Collin Morikawa's birdie at the 11th, the 2020 Masters winner slides an impeccably-judged fade into the par-three 12th - the shortest hole on the course. No more than four feet.

Viktor Hovland steps up. It's a brave effort, but Paul Casey will have to hole a 20-footer to stop the Americans from going three up.

  17. Spieth & Thomas pull a hole backpublished at 15:55 British Summer Time 24 September 2021

    Spieth & Thomas v Rahm & Garcia 2UP (13)

Sergio Garcia sees the funny side on the 13th after punching his tee shot at waist height but looks less amused by a putt that slips past after Jon Rahm's approach gave him a look at birdie.

Justin Thomas with a chance to pull a hole back and he sinks it from five feet.

  18. Johnson & Morikawa extend leadpublished at 15:54 British Summer Time 24 September 2021

    2UP Johnson & Morikawa v Casey & Hovland (11)

Dustin Johnson clips a delightful wedge into four feet at the 11th.

Paul Casey has 30 feet from the back of the green for birdie. It's a great lag, but doesn't drop and with Collin Morikawa converting, the Americans take a big step towards victory in the second match.

Two down with seven holes left. It'll be a big ask for Casey and Hovland to rescue a half.

    1UP Koepka & Berger v Westwood & Fitzpatrick (10)

Lee Westwood controls his wedge shot at the 10th and leaves Matt Fitzpatrick with 11 feet.

The Americans are close to the green, though, and Daniel Berger emulates Collin Morikawa with a delightful flop shot over the bunker.

Fitzpatrick can't hole his birdie putt, but Koepka can! The Americans retake the lead in the third match.
