He had to be aggressive but he looked at it wondering why it went that way.

Ian Poulter is usually so reliable but he and McIlroy are in all sorts of bother.

McIlroy halved the hole but that is a massive let-off for the Americans.

Dreadful. Frustrating. Call it what you will. Ian Poulter and Rory McIlroy fail to win the eighth despite having two putts to do so.

McIlroy's first, from long range kept going and Poulter couldn't knock in a seven footer.

A short-game clinic leads to a half in par threes, with the Americans still one up.

Jon Rahm zings his tee shot into the smallest section of the green on the par three 12th, a few feet from the pin. Talk about soft hands. Simply brilliant.

The door just creaked opened a little for the Americans on the 11th.

But that is very tame from Justin Thomas and it left Jordan Spieth with a bit of a task. He sends it onto the hole though - and a valuable putt for a half.

Now then, Matt Fitzpatrick clips a lovely approach into the par-four ninth. The Englishman is pin high and Lee Westwood looks pleased with what his team-mate has left him.

Brooks Koepka's response is far from his best effort, leaving Daniel Berger with around 25 feet for a birdie...and he races it past!

BIG chance for Westwood. It's about 15 feet, down the hill. A slippery one...and it burns the right edge.

There's work left to do for Koepka for the half. Five feet, and it lips out - a European win!

Chance for Justin Thomas with an uphill putt to win the 11th.

He's not hit that at all. It's well short .The American pair really need to convert any chances they get at the moment.

Par. Par. Another hole is halved in three. Are things starting to look up for Ian Poulter and Rory McIlroy?

Sergio Garcia's tee shot goes hurtling down and comes to rest on the fairway on the 11th.

Justin Thomas looks absolute astonished as his shot bounds in to the bunker!

Paul Casey has a good look at birdie on the par-four ninth. This is to tie the match, but it lips out on the right! That looked good a few feet out from the hole.

It's not over yet though, as Dustin Johnson must hole a tiddler for par, but the world number two safely negotiates it.

Another chance missed for Europe. On they go to the 10th.

Bouyed from saving the ninth the Spanish pairing of Jon Rahm and Sergio Garcia look to apply the pressure on the 10th.

How's that for a pitch in to the green? Garcia spirals a superb shot into three feet which world number one Rahm taps in for birdie.

You can't help but feel that the second and third matches are going to go down to the wire.
