  1. English puts USA ahead against Irishpublished at 21:08 British Summer Time 24 September 2021

    1UP Finau & English v McIlroy & Lowry (8)

Harris English puts the Americans ahead with a wonderful birdie on eight set up by a beefy drive and crisp iron shot flirting with Lake Michigan to leave himself just eight feet for the hole.

And he's not missing out on that one to go in front.

  2. Rahm birdie draws Europe levelpublished at 21:08 British Summer Time 24 September 2021

    DeChambeau & Scheffler A/S Rahm & Hatton (9)

Bryson DeChambeau holed a wonderful putt on the eighth, and he's just hit arguably the worst one of the week so far on the ninth. A total misread and he still has around seven feet left for his par.

Up steps Scottie Scheffler, putting for a birdie from the fringe, but it's left on the high side and that leaves the door open for Jon Rahm, who has six feet for a birdie.

It's a slippery one for the world number one, but he squeezes it in and that's a win for Europe - all square as they head for the back nine.

    1UP Johnson & Schauffele v Casey & Wiesberger (9)

Extremely tense over on the 10th with this match delicately poised. Aren't they all!?!

Soft hands from Xander Schauffele and Dustin Johnson sees the US duo both get a decent look at birdie after delightful pitches.

Johnson in particular should be able to sink that in his sleep, after lofting his wedge in high and taking the pace off his ball.

Paul Casey and Bernd Wiesberger are okay mind, having just run past the pin somewhere around 10-15 feet range.

    1UP DeChambeau & Scheffler v Rahm & Hatton (8)

Tyrrell Hatton is looking nice and relaxed out there, smiling and joking away between shots.

And it's not hard to see why. He's been playing lovely golf, and will have another good look at birdie on the par-four ninth.

Both American players are on the green...but Jon Rahm produces a beauty! After a 340-yard drive, the Spaniard knocks a lovely wedge just past the pin and he'll have about six feet for a birdie.

This one has 'going down the 18th' written all over it.

  5. Europe go 2UPpublished at 20:59 British Summer Time 24 September 2021

    Thomas & Cantlay v Fleetwood & Hovland 2UP (6)

The short par four sixth is essentially a short game clinic with all these players able to knock it close off the tee - and it's Tommy Fleetwood who takes the honours with the only birdie in the group.

Viktor Hovland sets him up as he was also looking good for a three but that enabled Fleetwood to have a go with his putt from just off the green and it just had enough pace to drop in on its last couple of rolls.

The pressure on the Americans, neither Thomas nor Cantlay could make their putts as they both went too aggressive on their pace.

That’s the biggest roar I’ve heard so far today.

Those packed around the eighth green and ninth tee roar with delight when Bryson DeChambeau sinks that putt for the hole.

Ever the showman, DeChambeau dances after the ball and then asks for more noise as he walks onto the next tee.

These lot don’t need telling twice.

  7. Europe's deficit 'not a big deal' - Garciapublished at 20:57 British Summer Time 24 September 2021

Spain's Sergio Garcia looked pretty relaxed earlier, swigging away at presumably an energy drink after the morning foursomes..

He certainly isn't too fussed about Europe losing the opening session of the Ryder Cup 3-1, describing it as "not a big deal".

Garcia and his compatriot Jon Rahm, leading the team out, were the only Europeans to score a point with a 3&1 win over the United States' star pairing of Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas.

"It was just the first session. A lot of things can happen," said Garcia.

"It's not a big deal. We have a good session this afternoon and everything is back to normal. I know the guys are fighting hard and we know that, and we are here for them.

"We would love to play amazing golf, all of us, and win every single point, but that's not the case. It doesn't happen. It's a very good American team and a very good European team, and the matches are always going to be tight.

"We'll see what it ends up like."

Paul Casey's putt on the ninth to win the hole is big for Europe.

I think the Casey Express is easing out of the station.

    Finau & English A/S McIlroy & Lowry (7)

Lowry has a chance to win the hole with a 15-footer for birdie on the par three sixth, but his desperately slow putt just wanders by the edge.

Finau takes advantage but just tapping in for the half.

  11. Casey & Wiesberger pull another hole backpublished at 20:51 British Summer Time 24 September 2021

    1UP Johnson & Schauffele v Casey & Wiesberger (9)

Well played Paul Casey. The Englishman holds his nerve to stroke in his putt after seeing Dustin Johnson slide his birdie effort past.

Arrears reduced as we head into the turn.

  12. DeChambeau & Scheffler take the leadpublished at 20:50 British Summer Time 24 September 2021

    1UP DeChambeau & Scheffler v Rahm & Hatton (8)

Smarting after missing that birdie putt on the sixth, Tyrrell Hatton absolutely roasts his drive 350 yards down the eighth fairway.

Jon Rahm is the only one of the four to miss the fairway, but he does well to get his approach on the green, albeit 45 feet away from the pin.

Hatton has just 150 yards left, but he's left it out to the left a bit, and can't make the putt.

Rahm has already missed, so Bryson DeChambeau has 21 feet for a winning birdie, and he makes it!

Another brilliant putt from Bryson, and the Americans lead for the first time in this match!

Phil Mickelson is still the star attraction in this second group.

Hollers for Lefty come from all angles at the back of the eight green, with the six-time major champion happily obliging with lots of thumbs up and the odd fist bump.

    2UP Johnson & Schauffele v Casey & Wiesberger (8)

Xander Schauffele is in the sand off the tee and playing his second with a blind view in to the green.

Just to make things interesting there are two rather large trees slap bang in front of him. He somehow manages to split between two branches but finds himself plopping straight into the greenside bunker.

    Risk and reward. None.

Bernd Wiesberger tries to scoot his ball up towards the pin but on come the breaks before it rolls on. How did that happen?

However, Paul Casey fizzes his iron in to seven(ish) feet. Brilliant.

Dustin Johnson is last to play and finds the putting surface, albeit Casey's ball is much closer.

    Thomas & Cantlay A/S Fleetwood & Hovland (5)

It's an adventure the fifth hole, and after Thomas and Cantlay almost find the water they escape and almost win the hole in the end as Thomas just misses his birdie putt.

Cantlay's drive would've been wet had it not been for some TV cables, but he took advantage of that break to stay dry.

Still Europe ahead in this one though.

  16. Finau levels as Lowry tumblespublished at 20:36 British Summer Time 24 September 2021

    Finau & English A/S McIlroy & Lowry (6)

Tony Finau's hit a fabulous tee shot to the front of the green on the par four sixth, and although he can't make the eagle it's good enough to win the hole and get it back to all square.

Shane Lowry's had an eventful hole, smashing his drive way left, taking a tumble down the hill to get his ball before almost chipping in! In the end though it's a hole back for the USA.

  17. Missed chance for Hattonpublished at 20:35 British Summer Time 24 September 2021

    DeChambeau & Scheffler A/S Rahm & Hatton (7)

Tyrrell Hatton has a great chance for a two after an exceptional approach at the seventh, but it lacks power and dribbles past on the left.

That's a half in par threes and we're still level.

Been an absolute doozy of a day on the Lake Michigan coast.

Brooks Koepka said earlier it wasn’t as warm as Barbados, but the blazing sunshine and turquoise water - where yachts are bobbing around close to the shoreline - you could be mistaken.

Suppose the gusty breezes aren’t felt in the Caribbean. Well, I assume not. A week in Clacton is more in my price bracket.

The winds have increased though. To the point where the flags are flapping hard on the grandstand and where you need to hang onto your hat on the seventh tee.
