    USA 11 Europe 5

Padraig Harrington has no choice now, he has to send his best in-form players out first tomorrow to try and get some blue on the board and hope that the pressure can make something stupid happen.

Because coming back from six points down would be a ludicrous comeback.

So, Jon Rahm will no doubt lead Europe out, with Sergio Garcia and Shane Lowry following close behind.

More from Tyrrell Hatton: "We have still got a chance, you are never out of the fight, we need a huge day tomorrow and that putt from Shane on the last was huge, hopefully that gives us momentum."

With their uniformed navy puffa jackets, emblazoned with the Stars and Stripes and a white USA on the back, the American team, staff and family members look like a fighter pilot squadron as they file to the 17th green.

Captain Stricker is joined by Lieutenants Mickelson, Z Johnson and Couples, with Airmen Thomas, Berger, D Johnson, Morikawa and Schauffele also supporting Scheffler and DeChambeau.

Mission successful. Hugs and high-fives all round on the putting surface after landing another point.

Let's hear from Sergio Garcia and Jon Rahm after that epic match.

Garcia told Sky Sports: "It felt great, that was fun to be a part of, to watch Jon do what he did this afternoon. I tried to contribute as much as I could be it was just awesome to watch the display he gave.

"He just did what he is - he's the number one."

Rahm: "We kept each other going really well, even in the down moments we picked each other up we were able to regroup and then I was able to finish the way I did.

And does Garcia think they can produce a miraculous comeback in the singles?

Garcia: "We're not going to give up. I love these guys, they're unbelievable, I will give my all to them and we're going to try hard.

"It's going to be difficult but we're going to try our best."

    3&1 DeChambeau & Scheffler v Fleetwood & Hovland (F)

Tommy Fleetwood uses the bank to try and make some magic - and he almost pulls it off!

Scottie Scheffler is also in the rough and he chops it out but it scuttles past Bryson DeChambeau's marker - remember he has a birdie putt coming up.

Viktor Hovland once more has it on his shoulders. my goodness that was so close as its just skirts past the hole.

That's it - it is all over and the match is conceded.

This match was so tight all the way until the very end.

All eyes are fixed on the 17th now. Scheffler hears his name chanted as he strides to the tee, but that’s nothing on the roar which greets DeChambeau hitting the dancefloor.

That might have been heard hundreds of miles across the water in Michigan if the wind was blowing that way.

Well, it wouldn’t but you get the drift. Loud.

Here is Shane Lowry: "Ive always wanted to play in a Ryder Cup and we are a few points behind but I am not stopping believing. I am having the week of my life, it is an incredible experience.

"I really hope we can give them loads tomorrow and put up a good performance. You just never know, all morning I was thinking of Medinah and there is just such a good bond in our team.

"We didn't get the break yesterday, out there today we are fighting as hard as we can. I said to Tyrrell, I was thinking in bed last night we are probably getting a lot of stick back home, because everyone is a genius when you are not doing well. But we are trying our hardest."

On his putt on the last: "I said I am made for this, this is it. I am so happy it went in. It's my mum's birthday so that was for her!"

    2UP DeChambeau & Scheffler v Fleetwood & Hovland (16)

Scottie Scheffler's tee shot finds the rough on the left, on the par three 17th. Bryson De Chambeau hits a beautiful shot - pin high to around seven feet.

Over to the Europeans - and Tommy Fleetwood finds some nasty rough. What can super-rookie Viktor Hovland do? it's high, it's straight and it finds the green but stays at the edge.

    Advantage USA off the tee.

Narrowed eyes, frowning eyebrows, mouths covered with hands. Lots of quizzical faces.

Everyone stood around the 16th green is shooting looks at the big screen where the scores are.

Harrington, vice-captains Kaymer and Donald, and non-playing Matt Fitzpatrick look remain relatively straight-faced.

Perhaps relieved their side of the board is ticking over.

Groans from the American fans turn to cheers when Hovland can’t drop his putt.

  20. DJ and Morikawa win 4&3published at 00:07 British Summer Time 26 September 2021

    Johnson & Morikawa win 4&3 v McIlroy & Poulter

    It's all over here.

Collin Morikawa has been magnificent and he makes another birdie at 15. It heaps the pressure on Rory McIlroy, who needs this put to tie the hole and keep Europe's slim hopes alive.

He slides it left, just. The Northern Irishman's face says it all. A point in the bag for the USA!
