  1. Scheffler goes 2UP on Rahmpublished at 17:53 British Summer Time 26 September 2021

    2UP Scheffler v Rahm (2)

A couple of decent drives from this duo, Scottie Scheffler just edging Jon Rahm and that sequence is repeated as they each flick an approach on to the edge of the green.

Rahm sizes up his birdie putt with views of Lake Michigan in the background, but he can't make it splash. That means Scheffler can have a dig to win the hole and go two up.

And he nails it! Scheffler is sizzling right now.

    Schauffele v McIlroy 1UP (3)

Big cry of 'fore' at the fourth as Xander Schauffele sprays his tee shot off right. Looks like it has come to rest on a banking just before one of those tricky fairway bunkers.

If he wanted to get his bucket and spade out he need not have worried as his second squirms off left into the sand at the front left of the dancefloor.

Rory McIlroy, exemplary off the tee again, is on in two but faced with a 48-footer on its way.

What a start from Bryson DeChambeau. He's eagled the par four first - and another epic moment for the United States in this remarkable Ryder Cup.

Sergio Garcia is the only person not reacting to it, and he is taking his birdie putt. He gave DeChambeau a thumbs up though.

Big energy from Bryson DeChambeau. Drives the first green, grabs the putter just as he leaves the tee box. Blimey.

The noise we heard when he hit the green was huge. Now it's surpassed when he drops the putt.

    The grandstand *literally* shakes.

  5. DeChambeau eagles first to go 1UPpublished at 17:48 British Summer Time 26 September 2021

    1UP DeChambeau v Garcia (1)

Lovely approach from Sergio Garcia, on any normal weekend he would be happy with that and the Spaniard has given himself a birdie chance. The trouble is, Bryson DeChambeau is eyeing an eagle after driving the green...

He stills has 40+feet to play with, mind. Oh my. What a sensational putt. That is ridiculous golf from DeChambeau, the pace is spot on, the line too and the eagle has landed for the American. Wow.

    Schauffele v McIlroy 1UP (3)

Rory McIlroy misses his birdie chance on the third.

He has been superb tee to green so far, just needs to warm his flat stick.

Still he stays remains one up on Xander Schauffele, who also picks up a par.

  8. Lowry edges aheadpublished at 17:44 British Summer Time 26 September 2021

    Cantlay v Lowry 1UP (2)

Patrick Cantlay's birdie putt on the second goes begging.

Shane Lowry with a putt to win the hole from four feet. It's a little tickle down the hill. In it pops. Never a chance he was missing that.

Europe up in the first two matches.

  9. 'Anything can happen in sport'published at 17:42 British Summer Time 26 September 2021

USA captain Steve Stricker: "I am confident they will give it their all, their best, they are playing great and fired up to get back out there - our message is it is not over yet, anything can happen in sport so our focus is truly on going out and winning this session today.

"That rookie thing it seems like with this group it is overrated, they have come in, they're excited, they are playing great - four have experience in the Presidents Cup, so they're ready."

Wary of another Medinah? "It is possible, right? It is something I know these guys are all aware of, I didn't bring it up last night but I know they are aware of it. That's why they are focused, I see it in their eyes."

OMG. The noise which greeted DeChambeau's drive kissing the first fringe might well have heard back in Milwaukee. That's an hour down the coast. Phenomenal whooping.

When most golfers do their practice swings it's nice and slow. Not so for Bryson DeChambeau and this muscle-bound American muscles it on to the green.

This is going to be a cracker.

  12. Bryson drives first greenpublished at 17:42 British Summer Time 26 September 2021

    DeChambeau v Garcia (17:37 BST)

Bryson DeChambeau taps the marker at the first tee and then milks the applause as he is announced in front of the raucous home support.

Sergio Garcia has seen it all before - shades on like a club-wielding Maverick, he might just have earplugs in to drown out the noise too.

Wow. DeChambeau has absolutely nailed his drive on to the green. He raises his driver to the crowd in delight. All that bulking is paying off... a right thumper.

    Schauffele v McIlroy 1UP (2)

Superb from Rory McIlroy on the third which is imposing at the best of times with a huge banking down to Lake Michigan looming to the left.

McIlroy plays a wonderful iron shot from the tee into the par three to give himself a look at birdie from inside 10 feet.

Xander Schauffele is perhaps twice the distance outside the four-time major winner.

    "De."

    "Cham."

    "Beau!"

The three sides of the grandstand split up the surname syllables as they welcome the textbook all-American jock.

Bryson laps it up, doffing his red cap and windmilling it through the still, warm air as he demands more noise.

  15. Scheffler goes 1UPpublished at 17:39 British Summer Time 26 September 2021

    1UP Scheffler v Rahm (1)

Jon Rahm's birdie attempt whistles by and Scottie Scheffler stands over his tiddler knowing if he sinks it, the USA go one up. No mistake from the American, plop, and the hosts lead.

    Scheffler v Rahm (17:26 BST)

Oooh, Scottie Scheffler has given himself a great chance on the opening hole against Jon Rahm, flicking a wedged approach to within four feet of the pin. Rahm will likely need to hole out from 22 feet to halve this hole...

    Cantlay v Lowry (1)

Even-steven on the first. Patrick Cantlay, who had shown a few signs of tension, splashes out of the sand to secure a par after running his ball to within two feet.

Faced with a downhill birdie putt to win the hole, Lowry judges his pace almost to perfection but sees it stay up on the lip. The Irishman gives his ball a rueful smile and moves on.

Sounds like a daft thing to say seeing as he is the world number one, but hear me out: felt this week like Jon Rahm's quality has surprised plenty of the Americans here at Whistling Straits.

Even Nelly Korda, the women's world number one, says she feels he is still "underrated" by fans.

"Rahm's so fricking good," one woman told me this morning. "We knew he was good but he has proved how great he is."

That's been a conversation had or overheard a few times. Rahm has taken 3.5 points from his four matches and he's the leading player in terms of strokeplay too, having played 15 under in his four rounds.

Although that wasn't lost on one heckler: "Are your shoulders hurting, Rahm? You're carrying the whole team."

    Schauffele v McIlroy 1UP (2)

That's a worldie from Rory McIlroy on his approach to the second.

He zips a laser-guided iron into six or seven feet with an eagle putt incoming. Where has this version of the Northern Irishman been hiding?

Xander Schauffele, is making the sort of mistakes he's avoided for the first two days.

Tee shot into the first cut and he now finds the banking to the right of the green giving him a rather awkward pitch but he's escaped by halving the hole after McIlroy scoots his putt left.
