If this eagle putt from Woods goes in then the roar will scare away the seagulls...

Up the slope it goes... but nowhere near enough juice from the former world number one.

The anticipation quickly turned to disappointment as the realisation set in.

And it isn't an easy one back for birdie...

Now this would be a heck of a way to finish.

Max Homa drove to the left side of the green and almost sinks his eagle effort.

    Over to Tiger Woods...

Six hours of golf and Tiger Woods is still walking well, striding over the Swilcan Bridge with the rest of the group trailing behind. Maybe he’s just eager to put his feet up…

Relatively sparse around the 18th as many of even the hardiest of golfing souls have left the Old Course.

Those who are still there, as Tiger Woods walks up the final fairway after SIX hours, provide a loving ovation for the three-time champion.

The 46-year-old American seems to be moving fluidly, which is great to see.

What would be even greater for those still there in the fading light would be a Woods birdie.

    Rahm +1, Spieth -1 (16)

Jon Rahm is berating himself again as he stalks up the 17th fairway. His tee shot drifted into the rough and from there he can only find the front edge of the green.

Jordan Spieth is also playing out of the wispy rough down the left after trying to carve a drive round the Old Course Hotel and only succeeding in hitting a straight one.

His second is tugged. Left. Well left. Left of the 18th tee in fact which is beyond the green. That's a decent line in though, plenty of green to work with him and he clips his ball to eight feet.

If you're going to end up in the Road Bunker then you probably want to be where Matt Fitzpatrick is, Enough room to knock out and the US Open champ does that brilliantly.

Max Homa, however, is in Trouble Town. He's sizing up his options, including - it seems - knocking off the bank and giving him space to play on.

Hmmm. The American goes through the various permutations and, after knocking backwards in what essentially is a self-imposed shot penalty, splashes out brilliantly to within a few feet.

Homa sinks that and escapes with a bogey five. Very well played, sir.

Most of us mere mortals would have walked off with a NR and a snapped sand wedge.

  7. Harrington finishes with birdiepublished at 20:56 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Harrington -3, Pieters +3, Mitchell +4 (18)

It may be 14 years since Padraig Harrington won the Open for a second time, but he has looked in good shape today.

The 50-year-old Irishman finishes with a birdie and is in the clubhouse on three under, five behind leader Cameron Young.

Plenty of players talked about the prospect of having to play backwards out of a bunker, is Max Homa is now contemplating that very reality?

Such is the depth of the Road Hole bunker we could only see a cap bobbing about from our vantage point as the American addressed his lie, before he swivelled and clipped a deft little effort out of the sand.

Talking of horror spots... both Max Homa and Matt Fitzpatrick get sucked in left. And you know what that means...

Homa mutters his displeasure after seeing his ball disappear into the cavernous - and infamous - Road Hole bunker. Wait until he gets there, we might need the bleep machine.

Following suit is Fitzpatrick, although he's not as tight up to the bank as Homa.

Woods shows all his experience by making sure he is nowhere near the sand.

  10. Birdie chances go beggingpublished at 20:47 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Spieth -1, Rahm +1 (16)

Here's Jordan Spieth, maybe 20 feet up the slope. It looks pretty straight and he starts his ball right at the centre of the hole. He thinks it's in but the ball slides by on the left.

Jon Rahm is a little closer than I first thought. He's got 15 feet left. He could do with this and he knows it. His ball dribbles down the slope but pulls up six inches short. The Spaniard gives a full-bloodied swish of his putter in frustration.

On to the 17th they head...

A hearty roar for Padraig Harrington, who manages to save par from a horror spot on the 17th.

Excellent scrambling from the 50-year-old. You never lose it.

Imagine standing on the 17th tee at St Andrews is perennially nerve-wracking.

So the last thing you need is a wait of a few minutes while those ahead get a shuffle on.

The Road Hole stretches out ahead, with the view partially blocked out by the Old Course Hotel.

Wonder if the rooms facing the 17th tee have a cheaper rate because of the threat of a smashed window?

No danger of that with people of this talent.

Homa, Fitzpatrick and Woods each shape beautifully drives around the building and onto the promised land of firm fairway.

    Spieth -1, Rahm +1 (15)

Jordan Spieth is in the middle of the 16th fairway, wedge in hand. He clips one off the already brown and bare turf and skids the ball in towards the flag. It grips but dribbles into a gully.

The American looks furious with himself. A tricky birdie putt.

Jon Rahm from slightly closer doesn't give his effort enough juice.

Well, how about that… either that’s a rainbow springing up behind the Old Course Hotel or I’m starting to go slightly delusional at the prospect of a very delayed dinner. No drizzle here, yet.

Well, this pretty much sums up the travails of this trio today.

Whenever it looks like they are gaining momentum, St Andrews comes back to bite them.

Matt Fitzpatrick and Tiger Woods drop shots after putts from close range.

Woods grimaces like he's forgotten he needed some butter for his sandwiches and hasn't got time to pop to the shop.

  17. Rahm drops anotherpublished at 20:31 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Spieth -1, Rahm +1, Varner +1 (15)

Jon Rahm's putt at 15 has to come up and over several contours and sneaks up a wee gulley in the middle of the green.

It's trying, but the ball still dies well short of the hole. Can he make it? No, he leaves it short and throws his hands to his mouth in disbelief.

Everything seems to be a struggle for the Spaniard at the moment, and he just looks a little disillusioned.

Jordan Spieth, however, is still grinding away out there and confidently strokes home a par putt to remain in the red.

Nearly five-and-a-half hours since this group teed off, and they still have three holes left.

    Woods +5, Fitzpatrick E, Homa +1 (15)

Tiger Woods sighs after knocking his second through the 16th green.

"Come on Tiger, 62 tomorrow!" shouts one supportive voice from behind the ropes.

Wishful thinking perhaps, but you know one man who will truly believe he can do that.

The 15-time major champion locks back in, knocking the chip back to within makeable distance.

This group, like most of the afternoon starters, have been out on the Old Course for almost five and a half hours.

Hope they had plenty of sandwiches in the bag. How many would you realistically take out? A couple of double slices?

It's been a physically and mentally tiring day.

Matt Fitzpatrick holds his wrist after hacking out of the sun-kissed rough on the 16th.

There could only be one round of the day.

Eight birdies, no bogeys, 18 greens in regulation.

    Your leader, Cameron Young.
