    Mullarney -2 (12)

Ronan Mullarney's just starting to cool a bit after a stunning burst on his front nine catapulted him to four-under.

After a bogey on the par-three 11th, the 27-year-old from County Galway comes up shy with a birdie bid on the next.

He's still going well at two-under, though. It'd be nerve-wracking enough playing in your first Open at St Andrews, but it must be even worse waiting around until after 16:00 BST to hit your opening tee shot.

Considering that, the Irishman's handling himself well in uncharted waters.

Tiger can’t believe it, and neither can the crowd - they were willing that birdie putt in all the way, trying to draw it into the cup with a collective intake of breath.

    It almost worked.

It might be slow but this is a lovely finish. The views back over St Andrews down closing stretch are glorious in the evening sunshine. Postcard-esque.

    Woods +5, Fitzpatrick E, Homa +1 (15)

"Get in the holeeee," shouts one fan as Woods putts for a birdie.

Initially it seems more out of hope than expectation but tell you what, it's not far off dropping in.

Woods grimaces in exasperation because he knows a birdie or two in the next half an hour or so could be vital to his hopes of staying for the weekend.

Homa misses his putt, by the way. Not for the first time from that range today.

Max Homa splashes out of the greenside bunker to leave him with a makeable putt to save par. Problem is he's missed a load of these today.

A slightly-longer birdie putt than initially thought for Matt Fitzpatrick, but he makes a good fist of it and should knock in for a par.

    Over to Tiger Woods...

    Spieth -1, Rahm E, Varner III +1 (14)

Now then, after a lengthy wait on the tee, this group have made their way down the 614-yard 14th.

Jordan Spieth's uncorked two big blows to reach the front of the green but can't get up and down and has to settle for par. The caddie's getting an earful after that one.

Meanwhile, Jon Rahm - who must be running a bit hot under the collar after being made to wait on the tee following a bogey - chips his fourth from the front up to three feet and escapes with a par.

Rahm doesn't look comfortable with his game at the moment. He's searching, as they like to say.

And it's a birdie for Harold Varner III - his second in three holes!

Tiger Woods certainly thinks there is ample time for a birdie or two. A gorgeous approach finds the heart of the green and gives him the chance to sink another.

Not to be outdone by his illustrious rival, Matt Fitzpatrick joins him there with a wonderful second shot of his own on the par-four 15th.

    Dinwiddie -4 (12)

Robert Dinwiddie is still cruising along at four-under, following his birdie at the 10th with a couple of pars. The 39-year-old, playing in his third Open, is still bogey-free.

The unheralded Englishman and America's Sahith Theegala are leading the way for for the later starters.

The wind has dropped on the Fife coast as the shadows lengthen. Could that see a late flurry of birdies?

  12. Birdie for Woodspublished at 19:59 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Woods +5, Fitzpatrick E, Homa E (14)

Homa collapsing onto his putter shows his disappointment and not being able to drop another birdie attempt.

Tee to green has been very decent for the 31-year-old American, but the short stick has let him down somewhat.

That's not the case for Fitzpatrick, who saves par after missing his first green in reg today.

Finally, almost half an hour after teeing off, this three-ball finish the 614-yard 14th when Woods drills in his birdie putt.

Long by name, long by nature.

A softer approach is needed by Tiger Woods from the side of the green and we see a delicious, delicate touch. Birdie chance incoming.

Thumbs up all round for Max Homa as he finds the green from the rough with his third shot.

Stiff wrists and commitment to the shot are the key. That's exactly what the American does and is rewarded with a fine outcome.

Bit of a stinger for the hands though.

"Billy, where's my target? TV Tower? OK."

That's the strategy for Matt Fitzpatrick but he's given it a little too much beef and ends up off the back for three.

Presume it'll still be the short stick for the Englishman from the first cut.

  16. Harrington birdies 14published at 19:50 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Harrington -3 (14)

Earlier we saw Ernie Els doing it for the over-50s club before stumbling over his last few holes.

But now Padraig Harrington is picking up for the pieces for the seniors, recording an easy birdie on the 14th after coming up just shy with his eagle try.

Remember, Harrington featured prominently at last year's US PGA Championship (won by a 50-year-old Phil Mickelson) so he still knows how to plot his way around a major.

OK, it's Max Homa to go first (my mistake). He clogs one out of a tough lie on the left and goes so far right he's near the 15th tee-box.

Matt Fitzpatrick plays relatively safe from his position in the rough on the right, knocking out onto the fairway.

Right then, Tiger Woods... he's got a short iron in his hand. That's for his second shot on the 614-yard par-five. Blimey.

A sweet-sounding connection doesn't get the kick it deserves and ends up going right of the green.

Billy Foster is the kind of caddie you need while you're waiting for what must feel like an eternity.

Something he has said cracks up Matt Fitzpatrick.

Perhaps it is a bit of football banter between Leeds United fan Foster and his Sheffield United-supporting boss.
