    Scott -5 D Johnson -6 (13)

The 600-yard par-five 14th was just a drive and a wedge for Rory McIlroy, It was wind assisted. But even so.

It's playing a little longer today with no assisting wind. Adam Scott pummels an iron towards the green and the ball comes up just short. Dustin Johnson does likewise.

  2. Bogey for Goochpublished at 11:53 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Gooch -6 (16)

A first dropped shot of the day for Talor Gooch comes at the 16th as St Andrews finally finds a way to break through his defences.

    Wise -4 (17)

American Aaron Wise is having a good day, he's now four under after 17 holes.

The 26-year-old is playing in just his second Open but just four shots off the lead so in a nice position.

  4. Rutherford off to stellar startpublished at 11:45 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

Jamie Rutherford is out for his second round and I’ve been a keen observer of his this week because his home club is Knebworth, which is where I grew up - one of us shot the club record there, the other used to traipse the bushes as a kid looking for stray balls. Wild.

Anyway, the 30-year-old posted a one-over 73 on his Open debut and has just got off to a fantastic start here this morning with a birdie at the first - it sounds like there are a fair few who’ve made the journey from Hertfordshire to follow him, too!

Rutherford plays on the Challenge Tour and came through qualifying to reach St Andrews.

He also has his own comeback story, having been hit by a car while running in Portugal five years ago, breaking four vertebrae in his spine, as well as suffering injuries to his knee and feet.

Now he’s navigating the Old Course with the world’s best.

  5. Scottie too hottiepublished at 11:45 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Scheffler -7, Hatton -6 (12)

Scottie Scheffler is on one of those runs right now. He drives the par-four 12th green and lags his eagle putt up to around six feet before stroking it in for a third successive birdie.

Tyrrell Hatton also went for the green but pulled up in the rough then overcooked his second and had to settle for par.

  6. Three more birdiespublished at 11:40 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Spieth -3, Rahm -2, Varner III -1 (5)

All three players birdied the second and they've repeated the trick at the par-five fifth with all three lagging their eagle putts down and rolling in short ones for a four.

Taking advantage of the benign conditions.

The grandstand overlooking the 16th green and 17th tee is filling up nicely now as the first few groups begin to filter through.

And after a pretty drab Fife morning, a suggestion of sunshine is threatening to light up Arbroath over on the north side of the water. I’d almost go as far as saying it’s… warm perched up here overlooking the town.

  8. Padraig's putting woespublished at 11:36 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Harrington -1 (6)

    Oh, Padraig.

Harrington started with back-to-back birdies but he's just dropped four shots in his last three holes, falling to a damaging double bogey after three-putting from 12 feet on the sixth.

That just wouldn't have happened in the Irishman's prime. Shame.

  9. Woods in painpublished at 11:35 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Woods +6, Fitzpatrick -2, Homa +2 (5)

Ouch! Tiger Woods finds a pot bunker down the right of the sixth as his drive squirts out to the right, and that swing really looks to have hurt his damaged leg.

It's now a really pronounced limp on Tiger and having to get in and out of this bunker will not help one bit.

    It's a tough watch now.

  11. Yet another for Sergiopublished at 11:33 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Garcia -4 (14)

Yes, you know it. It's another birdie for Sergio Garcia, who is flying out there today.

Seven under for the day and four shots off the lead. Just the 111 places he's moved up the leaderboard since teeing off.

  12. Postpublished at 11:33 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Gooch -7 (15)

Good save from Talor Gooch after getting into a spot of bother down the 15th. He gets back onto the green nicely and then produces a tremendous lag putt to roll it right up to the edge of the hole for a simple par.

  13. Postpublished at 11:30 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Spieth -2, Rahm -1, Varner III E (4)

Jon Rahm has pumped his drive down the par-five fifth, leaving him 232 to the pin. Ooooh, he screws it out right but that's a good miss on that hole today and he'll be chipping back across the green.

Jordan Spieth looks absolutely furious as he sends his approach skyward, but it seems fine to - safely on the right-hand portion of the green.

But, of course, as a three-time major winner he expects so much from himself.

It's a cruel game, and St Andrews is showing no mercy to Tiger Woods as he finds himself over 100 feet away from the flag, makes a decent putt to leave himself a birdie chance.

It's a nice try for birdie too but the ball slides by the edge in an act of defiance that brings Tiger to his knees - just as the course is doing in general to the great man.

He's still six over, the cut is projected to be level par, can Woods somehow make it to the weekend?

  15. 'Lot of people straining to see Tiger for maybe one last time'published at 11:24 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Alistair Bruce-Ball
Commentator on BBC Radio 5 Live

Tiger has had the wind taken out of his sails already this morning. He said after his round that the speed of the greens was something he didn't get.

Tiger Woods really has enormous galleries wherever he plays. I think a lot of people watching today think if doesn't make the cut, this is probably the last time we see him at an Open and we think a lot of people out here are straining to get a glimpse of him.

Lewis Irish: What a story! Hopefully Robert Dinwiddie can become Robert Didwinnie come Sunday evening

  17. Scheffler rolls in for birdiepublished at 11:22 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Hatton -6, Scheffler -6 (11)

    Peter Scrivener
    BBC Sport at St Andrews

When I saw the pin position on the 11th green I doubted any player would dream of taking it on. The hole is cut right on the left edge, above a cavernous bunker called Hill.

It's the trap Bobby Jones famously failed to get his ball out of on his Open debut in 1921. He had four swipes and then picked up his ball and ripped up his scorecard.

I've been in that bunker. It's about 10 feet below the green. I'm not saying I'm better than Bobby, but I got out in one. Somehow.

Anyway, I digress. Both Tyrrell Hatton and Scottie Scheffler are safely on in one and close enough to be hunting a birdie.

Hatton up first. But he immediately starts berating himself, knowing he's left that 20-footer short. Has Scheffler learned anything?

Different angle of approach but he's got the pace spot on. Birdie time.

  18. Par start for Dinwiddiepublished at 11:21 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Dinwiddie -5 (1)

Steady stuff from yesterday's surprise package Robert Dinwiddie, who can't quite nudge his birdie putt far enough down the hill.

He settles for an opening four. This is 39-year-old Dinwiddie's third Open, having missed the cut in 2015 and 2017. Barring a disaster, he'll be around for the duration this time.

  19. Wrong flag Tiger!published at 11:18 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Woods +6, Fitzpatrick -2, Homa +3 (4)

Woods loads up on the par-five fifth and launches a fairway wood at the green, but he slips slightly just as he strikes the ball.

The shot's still a decent one but it takes a nasty bounce forward on the green and actually rolls up to with 10 feet of the flag - sadly for Woods it's the wrong flag as it's the 13th hole that shares the green with the fifth!

  20. Postpublished at 11:15 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Spieth -2, Rahm -1, Varner III E (4)

No birdies for Jon Rahm or Jordan Spieth at the fourth, with both players failing to negotiate the contours on the green with their putts.

Varner III makes a nice 17-footer for his par.

Par-five coming up next for this group.
