  1. 'Perfect day for scoring'published at 11:11 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Graeme Storm
Two-time European Tour winner on BBC Radio 5 live

The conditions are absolutely perfect - the wind has dropped right down and the ground has gotten softer - the conditions are superb and it is a perfect day for scoring.

  2. Hatton has anotherpublished at 11:11 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Hatton -6, Scheffler -5 (10)

This is turning into quite the morning for Tyrrell Hatton. He looked a little disgruntled when a couple of early birdie attempts went begging, but he's reaping the rewards now.

The 10th is another shortish par four but the Englishman elects to play short and wedge on. It's not his best but the 35-foot putt is decent!

Scottie Scheffler is also picking up a shot. He takes a similar approach to Hatton but hits his second to 15 feet and nails the birdie.

  3. Gooch just one off the leadpublished at 11:11 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

The par run is over as Talor Gooch takes advantage of the par-five 14th with a birdie to move to seven under and just one behind leader Cameron Young.

Pretty impressive round this from the American taking full advantage of the conditions.

  5. Bad miss by Woodspublished at 11:03 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Woods +6, Fitzpatrick -2, Homa +3 (4)

Oh Tiger! He shows a wonderful touch to get his first putt to within a couple of feet, but then somehow manages to miss his par save and he drops back to six over.

Matt Fitzpatrick, meanwhile, picks up his second birdie of the day to move to two under. He actually doesn't fancy himself as much of a links player but his game would suggest otherwise.

Do you think by ‘everything’ they mean surviving the lengthy queue to get in and hand over a thick wedge of the folding stuff?

  7. DJ jumpingpublished at 11:02 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    D Johnson -6 (10)

The Old Course is there for the taking today, it would appear. Dustin Johnson has climbed to within two of the summit with successive birdie on the ninth and 10th holes.

Odds on a new leader by the time Cameron Young tees off at 13:26 are shortening by the minute.

  8. No stoppin' Sergio!published at 11:00 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Garcia -3 (12)

Sergio Garcia is tearing it up out there this morning!

On the 12th, the Spaniard demonstrates his immense prowess with a wedge in hand, sticking a 46-yard pitch into a foot and taps it in.

Six-under for the day. Superb going.

  9. Another Hatton birdiepublished at 10:57 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Hatton -5, Scheffler -4

There is no stopping Tyrrell Hatton right now. From just short of the ninth green, he knocks his second from 100 feet to within kick-in distance and the Englishman is just three off the lead.

Scottie Scheffler takes three from the front edge for par.

    Spieth -2, Rahm -1, Varner III E (3)

Rahm leaves his putt short at the third, but no worries - he's two-under through three and moving in the right direction.

Pars for the other two and on they go.

Tiger is absolutely furious with his approach shot to the fourth as he lashes his iron to the ground in frustration.

In truth, it's not THAT bad a result as it's pin high and crucially not in any bunker, but it'll be a testing two-putt over all the lumps and bumps.

  12. Great Scottpublished at 10:54 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Scott -4 (10)

Adam Scott is another on the move. A curling 15-footer on the 10th is the Australian's fourth birdie of the morning and he joins the group at four under.

He spoke to the BBC a little earlier this year about the agony he still feels about throwing away a shot at winning the Claret Jug in 2012.

    Spieth -2, Rahm -1, Varner III E (2)

Jon Rahm's out with the chief at the third. Feeling confident, he absolutely hammers that one, but it's down the left and that'll leave him a trickier angle coming over the bunker.

Oh but he's nipped that wonderfully off the turf and his ball lands well beyond the pin before zipping back.

A chance to open up with three birdies on the trot. He looks a different player already today.

  14. Gooch playing par golfpublished at 10:53 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Gooch -6 (13)

Talor Gooch birdied the first and the third, and has since rattled off 10 straight pars as he plots his way around St Andrews in relative comfort.

It shows that while scoring conditions are ideal - St Andrews still just doesn't hand over birdies, you have to earn them.

  15. Slow play - get involvedpublished at 10:51 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    #bbcgolf

    Peter Scrivener
    BBC Sport at St Andrews

A respected member of the media has just suggested to me that The Open field should be reduced to 100 players at St Andrews to help ease the congestion and speed up play.

Tiger Woods and Matt Fitzpatrick took six hours and 10 minutes to get round yesterday and the chances are it will be a similar grind today.

It's not the fault of the players - it's the nature of a tight course getting congested.

What do you think? Thoughts on slow play and size of fields to #bbcgolf - or hit thumbs up for a reduced field, thumbs down to keep it at the 156 we currently have.

  16. Garcia going lowpublished at 10:51 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Garcia -2 (11)

I can't remember having seen Sergio Garcia hit a single shot yesterday, but he's getting plenty of coverage this morning - and no wonder!

The 42-year-old is crafting the lowest round of the day out there, rolling in another birdie putt to move five-under for the day.

Can he match Cameron Young's brilliant 64 from yesterday?

  17. Birdie for Woodspublished at 10:47 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Woods +5, Fitzpatrick -1, Homa +1 (3)

    Here we go....

The biggest cheer of the day goes up around the third green as Tiger pops in a birdie to get back to five over, and he was overdue one of those to drop.

The crowd are definitely primed for a Tiger charge, even if it's in pursuit of merely making the cut and not the title.

  18. Postpublished at 10:46 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Scheffler -4 (8)

The ninth hole is playing 367 yards today. Scottie Scheffler pounds a drive straight down the middle and the ball is doing its best to skip onto the green but it pulls up a yard or two short.

The pin is 38 yards from the front, so he's going to have a sizeable putt should he make the right choice and get the putter out next.

  19. Postpublished at 10:44 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Hatton -4 (8)

Tyrrell Hatton comes up shy with his putt for a third birdie in a row at the eighth.

He's looking a little miffed with that particular effort but he should be satisfied with his play so far today - two birdies, six pars. He's nudging himself into contention.

The morning rain has died down and there’s just a few spots of drizzle in the air now - good news for those spectators wandering around the Old Course this morning, especially the few we’ve seen navigating a poncho about as successfully as Mario Balotelli does a bib.
