  1. Birdies all roundpublished at 10:38 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Spieth -2, Rahm -1, Varner III E (2)

Oh yes, Jon Rahm runs another birdie putt into the heart and he's off to a flyer this morning.

Jordan Spieth tapped in for birdie, and Harold Varner III follows them in with a well-worked three of his own.

Following this group might be a lot of fun today, I can feel it.

  2. Calc waves goodbye to The Openpublished at 10:37 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Calcavecchia +21 (82)

Mark Calcavecchia looks a little teary as he saunters up the 18th hole. The 62-year-old is playing in his final Open Championship and almost stacks it on the Swilcan Bridge for good measure.

There's no fairytale ending for the 1989 champion though. A three-putt bogey to finish and a final look around the magnificent arena that is the first and final holes.

An 82 to follow an 83.

Former champions are allowed to play until they are 60, but he missed his last one because of Covid so the R&A let him play in this one. Lovely touch.

  3. Spieth stunnerpublished at 10:35 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Spieth -1, Rahm E, Varner III +1 (1)

Jordan Spieth's drive at the second finds the rough down the right-hand side. He should be fine from there...ohhh he's much better than fine! The Texan conjures a sublime shot and it spins down to gimme distance. A certain birdie.

Jon Rahm and Harold Varner III both hit good shots in, too, so they have that flag well and truly surrounded.

    Three birdies coming up?

  4. Fitz picks up a shotpublished at 10:32 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Woods +6, Fitzpatrick -1, Homa +1 (2)

Not to be for Tiger as his birdie putt hits the hole but doesn't drop as it lips out, possible a touch too much pace on that line but we've seen them drop before - not today though.

Fitzpatrick dips under par for the tournament with a very nice birdie putt, which deserved to drop after he was robbed on the first!

  5. Hatton on the birdie trainpublished at 10:31 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Scheffler -4, Niemann -2, Hatton -4 (7)

Tyrell Hatton suddenly figures in the top 10 after another pin-seeker sets up a birdie tap-in on the seventh.

Scottie Scheffler joins him on that number after also going flag hunting with his second shot.

Jaoquin Niemann can't make it a hat-trick of birdies.

  6. Postpublished at 10:30 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Casey -4 (9)

Oh no! Paul Casey has played the front nine beautifully - as he did yesterday before coming home in 39 - but he won't be a happy camper walking to the 10th tee after a par on the birdie-able ninth.

The Englishman's second from the front of the green was well-judged, but he leaves his shortish putt hanging on the right edge!

Still though, out in 33. Stellar progress.

  7. Perfect start for Rahmpublished at 10:25 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Spieth -1, Rahm E, Varner III +1 (1)

That's precisely the start Jon Rahm was after! Having clipped a beautifully controlled wedge into the opening green, he goes ahead and pours in the putt with confidence. He means business today, let me tell you.

Pars for Jordan Spieth and Harold Varner III.

  8. Harrington birdies twopublished at 10:22 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Harrington -5 (2)

Padraig Harrington makes it two birdies in two - what a start! His game looks better than it has in years!

    Three off the lead.

  10. Birdie for Hattonpublished at 10:21 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Scheffler -3, Niemann -2, Hatton -3 (6)

Tyrrell Hatton has remained patient this morning, plotting his way round the opening five holes in level par. But a terrific second into the sixth gives him birdie look from six feet that he's not going to ignore.

Par golf for his playing partners.

  11. Stenson surgingpublished at 10:21 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Stenson -1 (10)

Henrik Stenson's triumph at Troon in 2016 featured some of the finest golf this great championship has ever seen as the Swede duelled with Phil Mickelson all the way down the stretch on his way to finishing t 20-under, three clear of the American.

Stenson is yet to return a top-10 at the Open since then, but he's rolling back the years this morning with four birdies in five holes from the fifth taking him into the red.

Great showing from the European Ryder Cup captain!

    Woods +6, Fitzpatrick E, Homa +1 (1)

Nice drive and a decent approach from Tiger Woods on two - there'll be a birdie try coming up for his fans to look forward to.

Three of them dressed in Tiger onesies are following him today, now that's commitment!

  13. Sergio on a rollpublished at 10:16 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Garcia -1 (9)

Sergio Garcia is on a bit of a charge this morning. The Spaniard birdied the fifth and seventh holes and has just drained a 47-footer for eagle after driving the green on the par-four ninth.

He needs a low one after a three-over 75 on Thursday and he's started off well.

  14. Rahm & Spieth under waypublished at 10:15 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Spieth -1, Rahm +1, Varner III +1

Jon Rahm finished tied third last year but the burly Spaniard has his work cut out for him if he's to make the weekend here.

The world number three really struggled on the greens during yesterday's 73, but maybe a good night's rest and bacon roll this morning will get him firing once again.

He pummels his opening tee shot with authority, anyway, as does Jordan Spieth, while Harold Varner III's hook will leave the American with a good angle to attack the flag.

  15. Par start for Woodspublished at 10:13 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Woods +6, Fitzpatrick E, Homa +1 (1)

After what happened yesterday, no surprise to see Tiger Woods go long with his approach shot to the first - and he tickles down his birdie try before settling for par.

He's two shots better off than yesterday already...

Matt Fitzpatrick can't believe it when his ball stays up as it meanders by the left edge.

  16. Harrington up and running with birdiepublished at 10:08 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Harrington -4 (1)

Padraig Harrington won't mind the damp conditions this morning one bit. In fact, he'll likely relish them.

The 50-year-old Dubliner will fancy his chances of lifting the Claret Jug for the third time this week, and he's doing a good job at sticking around the business end of the leaderboard.

Having shot an impressive 69 yesterday, the two-time champion rolls in a lovely birdie putt at the first to get to four-under.

Padraig may be plying his trade on the over-50s circuit these days, but write him off at your peril.

  17. Movin' on downpublished at 10:04 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Calcavecchia +18 (15)

The first man out this morning is finding the going a little tougher though.

Mark Calcavecchia set us off at 06:35 in drizzly conditions that have not really altered in the past three and a bit hours. The champion golfer of 1989 is now 18 over par and propping up the field.

He's playing with New Zealand's Ryan Fox who is one over for his round and level par for the tournament. The early projected cut mark is at that mark. It's the top 70 players and ties that make it to the weekend.

They've only got three holes left to go.

“T-DAWWWWGGG” hollers one portly sort as Tiger Woods spanks away his opening tee shot.

The galleries down the first are two or three deep already despite the dreich conditions.

While we settle down to watch Tiger Woods in action - let's look back at him in his glory days during his two fantastic Open Championship wins around here in 2000 and 2005.

  20. Tiger tees offpublished at 10:00 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    Woods +6, Fitzpatrick E, Homa +1

Tiger Woods with a bit of a limp this morning, understandably so after yesterday's long day on that rebuilt leg of his.

There's work to do and even making the cut seems out of reach, but he'll be giving it everything today and St Andrews will be cheering him on.

He swats away a long iron down the fairway, followed by US Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick and Max Homa.
