Players Championship winner Cameron Smith picks up on the importance of being reunited with his family: "It was unreal. I have not seen them for two-and-a-half years, golf really took a back seat and it was nice to get this for them.

"It is so nice to have them here and give mum a hug."

On local knowledge helping him to victory: "There are some tricky putts around here that you get to know over time and obviously spending a bit of time here helped.

"I feel as though one of these big ones was the next step for me. I have knocked on the door a few times and I felt it was my time. I hit lots of quality golf shots and did not back down.

On being another Australian winner: "The golf course reminds me of home it is firm and fast and you have to hit a lot of different shots into the greens which are alsways quick. To be so far away but be so similar to home is nice."

England's Paul Casey, who finished third, speaking to Sky Sports: "I wish my ball had not finished in a ball mark on the 16th fairway.

"It was the best tee shot I have hit all week on that hole. Cameron had hit it into the tree and I thought the door was open. I wanted to go for the green but there were too many variables and too many risks.

"With that quality of golf yes [I can win a big tournament] and you have to acknowledge how well Cam played today. To start off with all the birdies, it was a remarkable round of golf.

"There was no losing it, he flat out won it and you have to respect that. But if I keep playing that level of golf why not?"

Cameron Smith becomes the fifth Australian to win the Players after Steve Elkington (1991 & 1997), Greg Norman (1994), Adam Scott (2004) and Jason Day (2016).

    Lahiri -12 (17)

Anirban Lahiri looks gutted. He pushes at this approach into the 18th and lands it well short.

He is going to need to chip in to take us to a play-off.

Oh my. Cam Smith goes straight at the flag again. His ball lands like a dream and spins and checks before stopping three feet from the pin.

Paul Casey claims a very solid par but that's not going to bother either Smith or Lahiri.

I said many hours ago that Cam Smith has a habit of making mistakes when he looks in control. Three successive bogeys on the seventh, eighth and ninth looked to have been those mistakes.

But what is he thinking on 18? A high-handicapper error from the pine straw. Oh wow. This tournament is back on.

    Pure adrenalin surely.

Cam Smith punches out of the pines but puts way too much juice on that and watches his ball pick up pace, skipping across the fairway into the water.
