    Scheffler E, Koepka E, Woodland E (1*)

The fans have cleared away to let Koepka at his ball but he gets too much on it and it rolls beyond the green and into more thick rough on the other side. He's lucky to swerve a bunker.

It's a better outcome for Scheffler and Woodland. Both show off their touch to clip out of their bunkers and to within three feet.

  2. Defending champion Thomas drains long-range putt for birdie startpublished at 15:21 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    McIlroy E, Morikawa E, Thomas -1 (1)*

Rory McIlroy had indeed drifted left off the tee leaving himself a pitch on from around 100 yards.

He's digging this out of some slightly longer stuff here though and can only punt it up to the front edge of the green. He'll be able to take a putter from there mind.

JT, who was maybe 10 yards behind McIlroy lands his just on the dance floor and then drains a superb 30 footer to make an unlikely birdie.

Collin Morikawa, comes away with a par after coming up 60 feet short with his second and getting down in two from there.

    Higa -4 (5*)

The more casual of you golf fans out there might not have heard of Kazuki Higa before today.

But you've heard of him now. Lovely chip from a tough spot on the edge of the 14th green leaves a very makeable birdie from five feet - and make it, he does.

Playing partner Scott Stallings rescues a par to stay two behind.

    Hovland, Lowry, Spieth (15:12 BST)

Three-time major winner Jordan Spieth will partner Viktor Hovland and Shane Lowry in the first two rounds as he bids to complete a career Grand Slam.

Spieth needs to lift the Wanamaker Trophy to become just the sixth player to have won all four major titles after Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Ben Hogan and Gene Sarazen.

However, the 29-year-old American's prospects have been hampered by a wrist injury which forced him to withdraw from last week's Byron Nelson in Texas.

    Scheffler E, Koepka E, Woodland E (1*)

A first look at the long par three 11th for the opening marquee group.

At 245 yards, Creekside is a beast - and it plays as good as its name with Allen's Creek protecting the front portion of the green.

Precision required but it's a wayward shot from Koepka and he picks out the spectators to the left of the green. Scheffler fares a touch better but still finds himself in the right greenside bunker.

Woodland's shot goes straighter but it doesn't carry and he finds himself in the bunker at the front.

    Work to do.

  7. McIlroy on familiar groundpublished at 15:11 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    McIlroy, Morikawa, Thomas (15:01 BST)

Rory McIlroy is having a right natter with Justin Thomas as they wander up the 10th hole.

The four-time major winner says he got to bed early and has "done everything" he was supposed to do.

Let's see how he fares today.

By his own admission he has "spent summers here, spent falls here, and spent a few Christmases here," given his wife Erica is from these parts and worked as an office manager for the PGA of America at the Senior PGA Championship at Oak Hill.

    Scheffler E, Koepka E, Woodland E (1*)

A well-judged attempt from Brooks Koepka rolls close and he can tap in for par.

Gary Woodland follows the same line and he goes for it, his ball scooting past the hole. He's left with three feet and knocks it in for par.

Carefully done from Scottie Scheffler who tucks home at the second attempt to make his four.

    Higa -3 (4*)

Talk about setting an early pace.

A beautiful right-to-left 10-footer on the 13th from Japan's Kazuki Higa, for his third successive birdie.

Great start on what is the 28-year-old's US PGA Championship debut.

    McIlroy, Morikawa, Thomas (15:01 BST)

Time for another tremendous trio with eight majors between them. Rory McIlroy up on the tee first to a very hearty cheer.

The Northern Irishman clatters his ball long and slightly left and that line appears to be followed by defending champion Justin Thomas.

Collin Morikawa, takes a wide backswing and launches his go-to left-right fade. He'll be playing from the rough down the right.

    Scheffler, Koepka, Woodland (1*)

Sporting a natty yellow jacket, Scottie Scheffler finds the rough on the left side with his tee shot. A first chance to see how he deals with the thick stuff and he duly drills it to 12 feet.

Gary Woodland is in the long grass with Scheffler and he makes the green but his approach leaves it a good 25 feet for birdie.

Brooks Koepka's tee shot nestles beautifully on the fairway but he misjudges his second into the green and it drops back behind Woodland's.

We have marquee groups and then we have MARQUEE groups. A stellar trio of reigning US Open, Masters and Open Championship winners is heading out shortly.

Matt Fitzpatrick has spoken this week about how much he enjoys a tough challenge and he'd much rather have it this way that the 25, 30 under par tournaments you can get in regular PGA Tour weeks.

World number one Jon Rahm is the form player, and searching for a third major after his commanding four-shot win at Augusta National last month.

Cameron Smith has disappeared off the radar a little bit in recent months, having joined LIV Golf after claiming the 150th Open title at St Andrews last July. He's making his eighth US PGA appearance but is yet to crack the top 10.

Higa is not messing about this morning, as he joins Stallings in the very early lead in tremendous fashion by draining a huge putt that almost started out in Canada!

Officially it's a 35-footer for the Japanese but the ball stopped right on the lip, had a long think about things before deciding to drop. Higa rewards the ball with a kiss as he walks off the 12th green a very happy man.

Shall we get the marquee groups under way?

World number two Scottie Scheffler is joined by Brooks Koepka and Gary Woodland at the 10th tee to get their tournament started.

Koepka has his eye on a third US PGA Championship title - for 2022 Masters champion Scheffler and 2019 US Open winner Woodland, a victory on Sunday would be their first Wanamaker trophy.

Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy has spent the last few weeks trying to iron out an issue in his swing and comes into the second major of the season still stinging from his poor performance at the Masters, where he failed to make the cut.

The 34-year-old won the PGA Championship for a second time in 2014, but is yet to add to that fourth major victory and reckons his experience at Augusta National can act as a "wake up call".

"I was never so sure I was going to have a great week at Augusta and then that happened," McIlroy told BBC Sport.

"The night before, I felt so good, but the game can bring you back down to earth pretty quickly."

The world number three added: "It was a great lesson to me to not put too much into feelings or vibes.

"I shot five under on the back nine on Wednesday afternoon [in practice] and everything was in a good spot, but that's golf.

"The best way is to not let yourself get to that level of expectation. I need to have a little more acceptance."

Oak Hill 10th holeImage source, Getty Images

What’s not to like about Oak Hill, eh?

This storied track is hosting the PGA Championship for a fourth time with the only other course to host the event as often being Southern Hills, the site of Justin Thomas’ victory in 2022, which has done so five times.

But a recent interview given by course architect Andrew Green makes it sound like it's going to be far from easy going.

While Green stressed the removal of some tree-lined fairways offers plenty of encouragement to the bigger hitter off the tee, he also reckons the bunkers will be considerably more penal, with players having to play out sideways, while different shaped greens will allow for some daunting pin positions.

    Stallings -2 (1*)

How about this for a start from Scott Stallings! Donning a much-needed hoodie on this frosty morning in Rochester, the American cans his second shot on the 10th (his first hole) from 128 yards to immediately burst out to a two-under start.

A towering short iron comes dropping out of the sky from a great height, thumps into the turf then takes a couple of hops with a bit of spin on the ball and dives into the hole to the biggest early cheer of the day.

    That's warmed us up nicely.

  18. Higa under parpublished at 14:35 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Higa -1 (2*)

We've got our first player under par for the day - there may not be too many who finish that way if the wind gets up around Oak Hill.

Anyway, it's Japan's world number 99 Kazuki Higa, making his PGA Championship debut, who gets to one under first by rolling in a straight (ish) 12-footer on the par-three 11th hole.

    Koepka (14:50 BST)

Brooks Koepka says he hopes to learn from "choking" at the Masters as he bids to win a fifth major title at the PGA Championship.

Koepka shared the lead after an opening 65 at Augusta National and was four shots clear of eventual winner Jon Rahm when play was suspended due to bad weather in the third round.

However, that lead was immediately halved when play resumed on the final day, Koepka returning to the course and missing a par putt on the seventh as playing partner Rahm birdied the same hole.

Rahm went on to win his second major title by four shots with Koepka saying: "It is choking, right? If you have a lead and cough it up, that's choking.

"At the same time, I'm not dwelling on it. I've been in the lead, in that position a couple of times and haven't capitalised.

"I can't do it every single time. I'm not perfect. As long as I can learn from it, I'll be better off from it."
