    Rose -2 (7)

Justin Rose is trying hard to keep his momentum going, despite being in the cabbage down the right of the eighth hole. He only has 163 yards to the pin and tries to carve an eight-iron onto the green.

He succeeds but he's got zero control over the ball and can only watch as it zips through the back and into more vegetation.

It's been a great leveller at Oak Hill so far.

We've got 99 of the world's top 100 competing here in New York state but only one of that current top 10 is threatening the leaderboard.

That would be world number two Scottie Scheffler whose 67 earlier is good enough for joint second.

Making a mockery of those pre-tournament predictions.

    Finau +6, Scott -3, Homa +2 (10)

Adam Scott is furious with himself after his tee shot on the long par-three 11th - a tee shot that drops onto the green and settles 40 feet from the pin. High standards indeed.

Playing partner Max Homa drags right and briefly threatens to drift into Allen's Creek but eventually hangs up in the short rough.

  4. Rose continues to climbpublished at 23:29 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Rose -2 (7)

Half an hour ago Justin Rose was Mr Grumpy after a three-putt double bogey.

And it looks like he might be getting that sour face back out again on the seventh after finding a greenside bunker.

But there's a reason the TV cameras have honed in on him... big swing, ball flies out, lands 15 feet short and rolls out and into the centre of the cup.

The Englishman raises an index finger to salute the cheers. Back-to-back birdies gets him moving back up the leaderboard.

    D Johnson -1, Hatton +6, Schauffele +3 (8)

Fair play to Xander Schauffele - he had an awful start, four over after three holes.

But he's stemmed the bleeding, pulled a shot back and now a very nice pitch from the edge of the green has likely rescued par on the ninth.

The world number five is battling hard to get a foothold.

  6. Postpublished at 23:24 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Scott -3 (10)

Adam Scott isn't bothered about that dropped shot on nine.

He's just wedged a delicious approach to within touching distance of the pin and he glides it home.

    Immediately back in business.

  7. Postpublished at 23:22 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Mickelson +1, Cantlay +1, Fowler +2 (8)

Cantlay's first non-par is a bogey sadly, and no surprise it comes from him finding the rough off the tee and having to just dump it out back onto the fairway.

Mickelson also finds that left rough but he's got the better escape game and manages to find the putting surface before saving his par.

  8. Birdie on the hardest holepublished at 23:13 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Rose -1 (6)

The sixth is playing, statistically, the toughest on the course today.

Here comes Justin Rose, smarting off that double drop at the last.

He lashes his second into the guts of the green and the ball rolls out to 10 feet.

Rose turns that frown upside down at the first opportunity. Back under par.

  9. DJ threatening againpublished at 23:12 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    D Johnson -1, Hatton +6, Schauffele +3 (8)

It feels like Dustin Johnson has given himself a birdie chance on almost every hole and the ninth is little different.

Plum in the middle of the fairway, he lofts an approach to within 15 feet. Can he take this opportunity? He's only converted one far but looks in supremely confident form tee to green.

  10. Scott gives straight backpublished at 23:08 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Finau +6, Scott -2, Homa +3 (9)

This golf course will give - but mostly it takes away.

Just when Adam Scott got himself within a whisker of the lead, he immediately drops a shot after finding himself stuck in a greenside bunker.

Poor Tony Finau continues to feel the pain. He's lost another and is hitting the turn at +6.

Max Homa had consolidated after his tricky start with five straight pars but that's a dropped shot and he's back to +3.

  11. Sand savepublished at 23:00 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Mickelson +1, Cantlay E, Fowler +2 (7)

Phil Mickelson shows us he's not lost any of his short game skills as he almost holes out from the greenside bunker and has no strees when knocking in for par.

Just not happening for Fowler, who finds the rough by the green on seven and can't get up-and-down so drops back to two over.

Meanwhile, Cantlay has played seven holes and made seven pars - that's consistency for you right there.

  12. Double bogey sets Rose backpublished at 22:57 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Rose E (5)

Rose is out of the sand cleanly enough on the fifth but the ball just rolls on beyond the hole, leaving a 15-foot putt for par.

He misses and things go from bad to worse, as he skirts around the side of the hole with a bogey putt before finally holing out with his third attempt.

Just like that his two early birdies are wiped out.

  13. Johnson moves under parpublished at 22:56 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Schauffele +3, Hatton +6, D Johnson -1 (7)

Dustin Johnson cards his first birdie after six pars to move into the black.

Tyrrell Hatton's nightmare start goes on with another bogey.

  14. Scott into secondpublished at 22:51 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Finau +5, Scott -3, Homa +2 (8)

    Adam ScottImage source, Getty Images

Excellent finishing off from Adam Scott who drains his putt to move three under after eight holes.

Finau's effort from the edge is well paced but drifts right and he'll have to settle for a rot-stopping par.

  15. Rose in the sand on the fifthpublished at 22:45 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Rose -2 (4)

Rose tees off on the par-three fifth, but emphatically finds the sand.

It is deep, and he will have a bit of a cliff to overcome if he wants to salvage a par.

  16. Postpublished at 22:45 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Finau +5. Scott -2, Homa +2 (7)

For the second time in three holes, Adam Scott picks up the longest drive of the day with a smoking 365 yards off the tee.

It gives him a simple wedge into the pin and he leaves himself a 13-footer for birdie.

Tony Finau and Max Homa are hugging the back edge of the green as they try to get their rounds going.

  17. Postpublished at 22:40 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Mickelson +1, Cantlay E, Fowler +1 (6)

    Phil MickelsonImage source, Getty Images

Bogey for Mickelson despite a fine approach dropping to 10 feet from 160 yards out to rescue par - but he steams the putt through the break and drops a shot.

Fowler comes ever so close to another birdie with a 12-footer but it won't drop and he stays over par, while Cantlay cards his sixth straight par.

  18. Postpublished at 22:34 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Finau +5, Scott -2 (7)

Another birdie opportunity for Adam Scott on the seventh although this one is from near-40 feet and does not look as likely.

Sure enough, his putt dribbles by but he'll take the par and stay in joint fourth.

A tricky watch for Tony Finau at the moment.

He continues to leak left off the tee and is giving up shots like Peterborough's defence in the League One play-offs. (For a ridiculous semi-final, keep one eye over here).

Finau has dropped five shots over the last four holes.

    Mickelson E, Cantlay E, Fowler +1 (5)

These Oak Hill bunkers aren't like your regular PGA Tour - or LIV Golf - bunkers for that matter as they really are hazards.

Hazards mean nothing to Phil Mickelson who tries to lash an escape on the sixth out of the fairway trap, but it thuds into the sizeable lip and squirts sideways onto the fairway.

That could've been a lot worse for Lefty.
