    Rose -2 (3)

Justin Rose finds himself in the fluffy rough after claiming a second birdie on the third. He cuts across the corner to just nibble the apron to give him the option of trying to putt or chip most likely for par.

  2. DJ stays level-headedpublished at 22:29 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    D Johnson E (6)

Dustin Johnson gets himself out of a bit of bother with a lovely third shot on the par-four sixth, followed by a clutch par putt from around eight feet.

  3. Response from Rickiepublished at 22:27 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Mickelson E, Cantlay E, Fowler +1 (5)

It's good to see Rickie Fowler looking back to something near his best - as he shows by responding a dropped shot on the last with a birdie on the fifth.

Fowler nails his iron shot from 185 yards on the par three to just nine feet and then slots home the putt to get back to one over.

    Pereira E (5)

    Poor Mito Pereira.

Last time we saw him at the US PGA Championships, he was capitulating on the final hole of last year's tournament.

He's made a steady start today and deserved a birdie for a confident 20-foot putt - but the ball teeters on the edge of the cup and refuses to drop.

    How close can you get.

  5. Fowler drops a shotpublished at 22:17 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Mickelson E, Cantlay E, Fowler +2 (4)

Fowler drops a shot at the monster 617-yard par-five fourth after finding the rough off the tee and with his second - you'll just get no joy at all from this rough.

Mickelson found the fairway bunker off the tee, chipped out then stuck his approach to 10 feet only to miss the putt and settle for par.

  6. Willett nice and steady at the turnpublished at 22:17 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Willett E (9*)

Danny Willett has been steady for his first nine holes - he hasn't troubled the scoreboard with any birdies, but no bogeys either as he makes the turn in even par.

  7. Scott joins the top fivepublished at 22:16 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Scott -2 (6)

Sure enough, Adam Scott rolls in his birdie and he's joined the likes of Keegan Bradley and Viktor Hovland in joint fifth.

He finished fifth at Wells Fargo and eighth at Byron Nelson in his last two tournaments.

    Playing nicely into form.

  8. Longest drive alertpublished at 22:14 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Scott -1 (5)

    Adam ScottImage source, Getty Images

    Boom.

365 yards from Adam Scott on the par-four sixth is the longest drive we've seen today and he backs that up with a touch of wizardry to land his approach shot within five feet of the pin.

Outrageous stuff from the 2013 Masters champ who is surely about to go to -2.

  9. Pars all roundpublished at 22:09 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Mickelson E, Cantlay E, Fowler +1 (3)

Lovely sand save for Rickie Fowler on the short third. I say short. It's a par three. 209 yards.

Fowler knocks in from three feet for his three. Phil Mickelson holes from similar distance after misjudging his tee shot and chipping up from 35 yards.

And Patrick Cantlay also nudges in a short par putt.

  10. Hatton not having funpublished at 22:08 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Schauffele +4, Hatton +4, D Johnson E (4)

Dustin Johnson dribbled that birdie chance just past the hole on four, wasn't easy.

Tyrrell Hatton bogeyed the hole as he and Xander Schauffele continue to attempt to outdo each other in the 'worst possible starts to a round' category.

  11. 'I had a good feeling coming in'published at 21:59 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    DeChambeau -4 (F)

    Bryson DeChambeauImage source, Getty Images

Clubhouse leader Bryson DeChambeau has been speaking to Sky Sports after his opening round of 66:

"I had a good feeling coming into this week, I was wedging it really close all last week and there were some drives I hit really well that I was able to capitalise on and make a few putts."

On whether he agrees with many pundits and players that the Oak Hill course is very similar to Winged Foot, where he won the US Open:

"It's a little more nuanced here, there's water in certain places that can be a little more diabolical off the tee so I can't just flail it everywhere. The rough is very difficult. You can definitely run the ball up on some greens but there's some force carries as well, 18 is one of them, you've got to hit the fairway.

"There are some comparisons but this week is a little different test and I've got to be more than fairway."

  12. Finau hit with double bogeypublished at 21:59 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Finau +3, Scott -1, Homa +2 (5)

Tony Finau finally gets it out of the rough but it flies way past and he can only escape from the fifth with a double bogey.

It goes better for Adam Scott and Max Homa though who gratefully snap up their pars and move on to the next hole.

  13. Rose gives back his birdie startpublished at 21:56 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Rose E (2)

A decent start for Justin Rose with a birdie on the first.

He finds himself in a spot of bother in the sandy stuff on the second but hits the dancefloor with a quality escape.

But it's a long putt and it's not quite on line so he'll drop back to evens.

  14. Postpublished at 21:54 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Finau +1 (4)

It gets worse for Tony Finau.

He hacks at a chip from the thick grass but it catches on the edge of the green and trundles back into an equally treacherous lie.

His scorecard heading the wrong way at the start of day one.

  15. Postpublished at 21:50 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    D Johnson E (3)

His playing partners, Xander Schauffele (+4) and Tyrrell Hatton (+3), have dropped seven shots in the opening three holes but Dustin Johnson is keeping his head while those around him fail to.

A nice approach to the par-five fourth has provided a birdie chance. It's a good 15 feet though so no gimme.

  16. Postpublished at 21:49 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Finau +1, Scott -1, Homa +2 (4)

Yuck, that's not a fun outcome for Tony Finau.

He's pulled his tee shot on five to the thick rough guarding the left side of the bunker. It'll be a very tricky up-and-down to make a three.

It's looking a lot healthier for Adam Scott though who finds the front of the green with his approach.

  17. Fox 'surprised but pretty chuffed'published at 21:42 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Fox -2 (68)

    Ryan FoxImage source, Getty Images

Ryan Fox shot two under, to finish the first round on 68, and was speaking to Sky Sports:

"To be honest surprising was the word that comes to mind. There wasn't a lot of prep coming in to this week with what's been going on at home. There was scrappy stuff out there as well today, a couple of average iron shots. I drive the ball ok which is probably important around here and rode a really hot putter, which is not normally my thing. Pretty chuffed with how today went."

On his putt off the green on the 14th hole:

"I was just really happy to be there because if you'd seen where my second shot came from, I was behind the tree and that was best case scenario to get to there - that was a nice one.

"We waited on that tee for about 30 minutes and I hit it behind the tree and I thought I had no hope. To get where I was, was probably as good as I could have expected and to hole a 20-footer from off the green is always nice."

On a wild month for the New Zealander:

"I got sick at the Masters and didn't have anything left in the tank. I found out I had pneumonia and had two weeks off and antibiotics and took a fair while to get over that. We were in hospital two weeks ago for the birth of Margot and so a few sleepless nights on top of that.

"The time off was nice and I could just be dad for a while and then I had to sneak some practice in because I didn't want to go into a major completely cold but it was nice having three and a half weeks off."

  18. Postpublished at 21:40 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Finau +1, Scott -1, Homa +3 (4)

Adam Scott is thick in the sand on the fourth hole and has to do the half-splits to dig his ball out of the trap.

Let's hope those trousers of his have got some give.

It's a nice recovery though and the Australian has a birdie shout but he slides his putt past and makes a five to stay on -1.

Playing partner Max Homa is also in for a par but Tony Finau leaves himself too much to do and three putts for a bogey.

  19. Postpublished at 21:38 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Mickelson E, Fowler +1, Cantlay E (3)

A bit of Mickelson magic to get the punters excited at Oak Hill.

Short off the tee, Lefty picks up the wedge and dinks his ball within three feet to pocket a par.

A simple touch of the cap and back to business for the two-time champion.

  20. Fleetwood back to level parpublished at 21:35 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Fleetwood E (4)

England's Tommy Fleetwood bogeyed the first but he's just cancelled that dropped shot with an aggressive par putt on the fourth that circled the drain but went down.
