    1Up Fitzpatrick/McIlroy v Cantlay/Clark (9)

Go on then Wyndham Clark. What have you got?

With Patrick Cantlay having already picked up for five, he takes a steady approach with his birdie putt.

Sidles up and takes the par.

Matt Fitzpatrick has a chance for the win, but he won't want to leave himself uncertain of matching Clark.

Before that, Rory McIlroy goes for the Hollywood (or Holywood?) chip in from the fringe. Why not.

    1Up Fitzpatrick/McIlroy v Cantlay/Clark (9)

After another half on the ninth hole, this group looks poised to do the same on the 10th.

Unless either Matt Fitzpatrick or Wyndham Clark, who are both sat on the green for two, can convert a birdie putt.

As if we didn't know it before, these final two fourballs matches are key.

Fancy the Americans need to take a point or point and a half from them to stand a chance tomorrow.

    Hovland/Aberg v Burns/Morikawa 5UP (12)

Rattled? Not quite, but Sam Burns is not as long as he wants to be on 13 and finds some crunchy rough down the right.

His playing partners are all on the fairway, a little way back.

Will the Americans get it done here?

Are we witnessing the start of the mother of all collapses in the top match?

A collapse not seen since Andy Hay fell apart on the back nine to hand victory to Rich Carter in the Albion golf society I play in.

And to add insult to injury to Andy, his wife now has bragging rights in the house after winning a club comp in only her second season. Congrats Maggi!

    Hovland/Aberg v Burns/Morikawa 5UP (13)

    Didn't see that coming.

Collin Morikawa lips out and hands Europe a lifeline thanks to Ludvig Aberg's brilliant tee shot.

The European pair are still breathing in this one.

    1UP Rose/MacIntyre v Thomas/Spieth (10)

Bob MacIntyre & Justin RoseImage source, Getty Images

Justin Rose may be slightly solo here but he's taking it to the American pair of Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth - as he pours in another from 15 feet out to get Europe's noses in front.

He cups his ear to the crowd to get them going, as it's gone a bit quiet recently - and if you didn't know how important this match was then Luke Donald has just turned up to give Rose a pat on the back.

    This is big.

    Hovland/Aberg v Burns/Morikawa 6UP (12)

Just as I was praising Collin Morikawa, Ludvig Aberg is ever-so-close to a slam dunk.

His tee shot spins back inside Morikawa and is two feet from dropping.

A hole-in-one would be some momentum shift.

Sadly, Morikawa just needs to slot home to clinch the point for America.

    Oh boy, a procession.

Two fabulous tee shots from the Americans, including an absolute pearl from Collin Morikawa that lands four feet from the pin.

They only need to halve the hole to clinch this fourball.

Tremendous stuff from the Americans. They're going to take this form into the singles matches tomorrow no doubt, once they close this one out.

    Hovland/Aberg v Burns/Morikawa 6UP (12)

Four US teams have played the 12th hole so far today.

Four US teams have eagled it.

Don't forget there are some mighty fine golfers in Zach Johnson's ranks.

  13. Morikawa gets another for USApublished at 14:52 British Summer Time 30 September 2023

    Hovland/Aberg v Burns/Morikawa 6UP (12)

The Europeans have matched Collin Morikawa on the green, only he has taken one shot fewer.

An eagle chance to guarantee half a point at worst for the Americans in this pairing.

    Aims, draws, fires and in.

Six up with six to go - the US are on the brink.

    Fleetwood/Hojgaard v Homa/Harman 3UP (11)

Spoiler European fans: he doesn't miss.

So assured from Max Homa to match Nicolai Hojgaard's birdie on the 11th.

That preserves the three-hole lead with seven left to play.

    Fleetwood/Hojgaard v Homa/Harman 3UP (10)

Harman goes first and attacks it with Homa inside him. That doesn't drop.

This one from Hojgaard needs to, you feel, if Europe are going to salvage this match.

Got it! The roars are loud and will be amplified if Homa misses his putt...

  16. Postpublished at 14:46 British Summer Time 30 September 2023

    Fleetwood/Hojgaard v Homa/Harman 3UP (10)

With Fleetwood in the bunker on the left and Hojgaard up ahead with a monster drive, Homa and Harman go on the attack on the 11th.

After conservative tee-shots they pepper the flag and put the pressure back onto their opponents.

Hojgaard has a tough second shot, even though he is further up the fairway. Chops into it and makes it stick. Lovely.

    Hovland/Aberg v Burns/Morikawa 5UP (11)

The 12th hole disappears down a plunging descent, with postcard views of the city of Rome in the background.

Collin Morikawa is not interested in those though as, gameface on, he skewers another fine iron onto the green to leave 10 feet for eagle.

A magnificent shot from the dialled-in American.

    Matt Wallace
Four-time European Tour winner on BBC Radio 5 Live

Just looking at Bob MacIntyre, looks a little bit dejected. He hasn't really been there today. He's hit some good shots but hasn't really capitalised.

He needs something - push those shoulders back and think about winning the Ryder Cup. Let's get going now.

It's hot out there so no surprise that many fans are heading to the 19th at Marco Simone as the afternoon wears on.

Laura and Mick from Rochdale are out here celebrating Mick’s 50th and stopped off for a quick photo on the way.

The figure atop the Ryder Cup? Good question. It's Abe Mitchell... a man who taught Samuel Ryder himself a thing or two about playing golf. Mitchell came from humble beginnings but defied those who pilloried him for his roots. Click here to have a read about him...
