  1. Rose levels at the turnpublished at 14:40 British Summer Time 30 September 2023

    Rose/MacIntyre v Thomas/Spieth A/S (9)

Justin Rose levels the match at the turn as he makes a birdie on the par five, with Robert MacIntyre just missing a birdie putt of his own from nine feet.

The Englishman is carrying the Scotish rookie a bit again here but MacIntyre isn't playing badly, just struggling still on the greens.

Looks like Rose could be involved in another tight finish like yesterday..

Boy, was this needed by the home side.

After what feels like a rare miss by Max Homa, Tommy Fleetwood takes advantage by sinking his birdie attempt on the 10th green.

That's the first hole won by the European pair today.

The wind has gone out of European sails a little bit, perhaps this is the catalyst for them to be raised again.

Still a long way back for Fleetwood and Hojgaard.

  3. Morikawa extends US advantagepublished at 14:35 British Summer Time 30 September 2023

    Hovland/Aberg v Burns/Morikawa 5UP (11)

The red grip tightens on group one as Collin Morikawa thumps his putt in and Viktor Hovland drifts his by.

Hovland and Viktor Aberg set a Ryder Cup foursomes record this morning - perhaps a bit of a hangover this afternoon as they have only made one birdie in total in the first 11 holes.

US five up with seven to play.

    1Up Fitzpatrick/McIlroy v Cantlay/Clark (8)

Sounds like Rory McIlroy and Wyndham Clark exchanged a few words, something or other about ball position and playing by the rules.

Oooh, yes. A bit of needle. Here for that.

    Hovland/Aberg v Burns/Morikawa 4UP (10)

Plenty to admire about those approach shots from Viktor Hovland, Collin Morikawa and Sam Burns.

Upcoming they will have eight feet, eight feet and 12 feet respectively for birdie.

  7. 'Needle with Clark will pump McIlroy up'published at 14:29 British Summer Time 30 September 2023

    1Up Fitzpatrick/McIlroy v Cantlay/Clark (8)

    Paul Waring
European Tour pro on BBC Radio 5 Live

McIlroy has been hitting some great shots in the middle of this front nine. A little bit scrappy in the last couple but you can see he's starting to just get in the game.

Things like this needle with Wyndham Clark can really start to pump him up, especially if the crowd start to get behind him how.

    1UP Fitzpatrick/McIlroy v Cantlay/Clark (8)

Oooh, European hopes raised even further by Cantlay lagging his birdie putt. This is not dead.

Fitzpatrick can't seal the deal with a birdie and neither can McIlroy.

OK, Cantlay still in this. He rattles his par putt at the can and the pace takes it home.

Another hole halved, seven from eight and Europe winning the only decisive one.

    1UP Fitzpatrick/McIlroy v Cantlay/Clark (7)

So far, six of the seven holes in this final match have been halved.

    Tight but not tense.

Matt Fitzpatrick shows he's swinging freely by confidently going over the water and finding the middle of the green.

Moments later, he's joined by Rory McIlroy who produces something special from the rough.

    Opportunity for a rare hole...

    Hovland/Aberg v Burns/Morikawa 4UP (10)

The 11th is a short par four but it's safety first for Sam Burns. He's laid it onto the fairway to allow Collin Morikawa to take aim. No, he's hanging back too - I guess they don't need to take risks at the moment.

Both Europeans have plenty of distance in those giant clubs. They go further than the Americans, but Ludvig Aberg is in the undergrowth and Viktor Hovland still short of the green.

Now there's very much a green drive to this Ryder Cup with free drinking water refill stations for fans across site including one slap bang in the middle of the village to reduce single-use plastic waste.

The fleet of cars used to ferry officials and players are electric and the organisers have powered the builds through solar.

All food is sourced locally and a charity takes and donates all the daily surplus food to those in need in Rome.

On the flip side, given the location of the venue, lots of journeys here will be made in normal cars and coaches. And congestion can be fairly difficult to avoid on the roads away from the course.

    Hovland/Aberg v Burns/Morikawa 4UP (10)

Collin Morikawa rolls it tight and taps it in for par. Ludvig Aberg misses a difficult attempt for the win but the hole is halved when Viktor Hovland casually chips in from the fringe. Glorious.

    On they march.

The USA had to find their form at some point, there's just too much talent on the team not to, and this could be the session that they finally hit back.

The tables have certainly been turned in the top two matches, where the Europeans are making the same mistakes we've seen from America throughout, maybe taking on too much when behind.

As it stands Europe will finish the day with a five-point lead, but if the USA can get a clean sweep here the lead will be down to just three!

After being miles out in front for so long, these are dangerous times for Luke Donald's side.

    Hovland/Aberg v Burns/Morikawa 4UP (9)

Urgh, a pair of ugly sand attempts from Viktor Hovland and Sam Burns as they flunk into the greenside rough. At least for Burns he knows Collin Morikawa looks good for at least a par.

Ludvig Aberg was plugged so got a drop, but he will probably have to chip this in to win the hole.

  15. Harman puts US into big leadpublished at 14:15 British Summer Time 30 September 2023

    Fleetwood/Hojgaard v Homa/Harman 4UP (9)

    Brian HarmanImage source, Reuters

Tommy Fleetwood for birdie... he must sink this. That's because Brian Harman is lining up an eagle putt after a sensational second shot on this par-five ninth hole.

Taking his time to line it up, Fleetwood gives it a shove up the slight incline, only for the ball to break and drift wide.

    Two putts for Harman then.

A man with finishing as clinical as Harry Kane isn't going to three putt.

The Americans are four up at the turn.

Fi: USA are stronger in match play situation when they only need to play as individuals. They’ve got a bit of momentum back. Be great if Europe can conjure up another 1.5 points from this position.

Other than the positive team dynamic and competent pairing selections, one of Luke Donald's standout qualities as captain has been his set-up of this Marco Simone golf course. Europe have ensured that it plays predominantly to their strengths, not the Americans. Namely, they've done what they could to turn this into a driving competition, rather than let it become a putting contest. It's worked a treat over the first three sessions, but now the USA are rolling in the putts from all angles.

    Hovland/Aberg v Burns/Morikawa 4UP (9)

These four were all well placed after their tee shots on the 10th but again it's only really Collin Morikawa who cashes in.

Sam Burns is in the bunker, Ludvig Aberg in the rough flanking the green and then Viktor Hovland dumps a tired-looking shot into the sand.

With 24 foot for birdie, Morikawa will aim to stretch the US lead.

  18. Sand save for Spiethpublished at 14:11 British Summer Time 30 September 2023

    Rose/MacIntyre v Thomas/Spieth 1UP (8)

Justin Rose also plays a nice chip out of the rough to guarantee Europe a four, but Jordan Spieth converts that sand save to maintain that one-hole lead.

This looks like being the crucial match of the sessions with the USA well ahead in the top two.

    Fleetwood/Hojgaard v Homa/Harman 3UP (8)

To illustrate Graeme's point, Nicolai Hojgaard cracks his approach on the ninth into the drink at the back of the green.

Tommy Fleetwood is on the green with a birdie putt, however.

  20. 'Fleetwood and Hojgaard just aren't firing'published at 14:08 British Summer Time 30 September 2023

    Fleetwood/Hojgaard v Homa/Harman 3UP (8)

    Graeme Storm
Two-time European Tour winner on BBC Radio 5 Live

Both Fleetwood and Hojgaard just aren't firing. Both of them aren't backing each other up. One player is in, one player is out, all the way. Homa and Harman are backing each other perfectly. If Homa's not in, Harman is and vice versa.
