Much more like it from Great Britain, who weren't as impressive as some of their medal rivals - New Zealand, Canada and Australia - against Brazil earlier, despite winning 29-3.

Emily Scott and Heather Fisher added to first-half tries from Amy Wilson Hardy, Joanne Watmore and Katy McLean to complete a convincing win, with Jasmine Joyce's yellow card for throwing the ball away the only blemish.

But any Brazil-Argentina rivalry is put to one side as reigning world champion Paula Pareto also claims the Olympic title.

Pareto beats Korea's Bokyeong Jeong with a waza-ari, then laps up the acclaim of a celebrating Carioca Arena.

    Great Britain 26-0 Japan

That was a very impressive first half from the Great Britain ladies.

Amy Wilson Hardy doubled her try tally after three minutes, running over from close range after Japan lost the ball in the tackle.

Then strong GB defence on their own try line paid dividends when Joanne Watmore snatched the ball and scored by running the length of the pitch.

Finally, Katy McLean crossed after the buzzer when Britain recycled possession out of the tackle effectively to exploit space on the right wing.

    Brilliant performance so far!

    Bullet

There was an unusual incident at the equestrian media centre earlier when a bullet dropped through the canvas roof.

Fortunately no-one was hurt but freelance photographer Jon Stroud was there when it happened.

He told BBC Radio 5 live: "We were in here during the lunch break, which is the busiest time in the press room, and we just heard a really loud bang behind us. We thought a light had fallen off the ceiling but when we went to take a look, lying on the ground was a bullet.

"A member of the photo team here took the bullet away and we saw them having a discussion with the military and trying to establish where it came from. The whole area around here has been militarised. We have heard gun fire from the firing ranges, some of which is very close by. There's no official statement made, we can just suppose it was probably a stray, but stray bullets do just as much damage as aimed ones."

    'It was Adam's race!'published at 20:50 British Summer Time 6 August 2016

GB swimmer Ross Murdoch was third in his 100m breaststroke heat earlier on to qualify - but his thunder was rather overshadowed by team-mate Adam Peaty smashing a WORLD RECORD.

"It was just Adam's race. It was a world record, it was great, what else did you think I would say?" said Murdoch.

"If you look at the trends in swimming down the years, there's a build-up in an event and that's been happening since London, a build-up of people going 59 lows and 58 highs and all of a sudden, one just emerges and bursts from the pack and that's Adam this time. Everybody will catch him up eventually. It may take a full Olympic cycle but people will catch him up."

    Chris Boardman
Olympic cycling champion on BBC TV

On how Chris Froome will be affected ahead of Wednesday's time trial: There is a price to pay and you won't fully recover before the time trial and he has to make a choice really. But I kind of like the fact he committed to this fully. He was in it until the end and he even thought 'I'll sprint for the minor places' but it isn't ideal preparation for the time trial.

He scored a 15.700 in the qualifying round, but was gazumped by team-mate Max Whitlock who scored 15.800.

Well, that was more difficult than it had to be.

When she was serving for the match at 6-4 6-5, everything looked rosy for Heather Watson, but Peng Shuai made her work for every point, taking the match to a last set via tie-break and bouncing back from an early break in the third.

The Brit broke for a second time in the sixth game, only for Peng to again strike back straight away.

However, Watson secured the match with a third break of the set to make it 5-3, and despite being taken to deuce serving for the game, held to book her place in the second round.
