They hit the sprint and Rafal Majka doesn't have the puff for the charge. He lets Greg van Avermaet and Jakob Fulgsang duke it out and the Belgian Van Avermaet takes it with relative ease.

Dane Fuglsang gets silver and Pole Majka will get bonze.

Rafal Majka is blowing and going backwards. He's been caught by Jakob Fuglsang and Greg van Avermaet as they turn on to the sea front and 500m to go. Which of the three will be Olympic champion?

Amber: I feel like crying for these road race leaders who rode for 6 hours then crashed. All that hard work for nothing.

Derek Bithell: No way gutted for you Geraint Thomas, another great race hope he's not scratched up to much. Gutted seriously gutted.

Natalie A Edwards: Poor Geraint Thomas! So near yet so far. Hope he's OK.

Denmark's Jakob Fuglsang and Belgium's Greg van Avermaet are the two men chasing down Rafal Majka as they draw close to Copacabana. This is going to be so close for the three medals.

So, can the chase group get hold of Rafal Majka? They are 13 seconds behind with 4.7km to go. They seem to be making up ground with Greg van Avermaet leading the way - this isn't over.

That crash from Vincenzo Nibali held up Joaquim Rodriguez, but Poland's Rafal Majka has come out OK and has stormed up the road and is on course to win gold.

    There's 9km left.

Argh!!! Geraint Thomas comes a cropper on the descent too and is on the floor. He looks OK but he's not getting back on his bike. The Briton is out and his medal hopes are dashed.

    Astonishing!

    Where's Chris Froome?published at 19:23 British Summer Time 6 August 2016

Tour de France winner Chris Froome is still trying to chase down the group behind the leaders. That group contains Geraint Thomas.

But there are three leaders and as it stands, they'll be fighting it out for the medals - Italy's Vincenzo Nibali, Poland's Rafal Majka and Spain's Joaquin Rodriguez.

Nibali's attempted break failed. The trio have 15secs on the group behind with 15.4km to go... they can still be caught.

Spain's Joaquim Rodriguez has joined the lead group. Chris Froome is trying to do the same - but he hasn't achieved it yet. Will the well be dry if he does make contact?

Meanwhile, Colombia's Sergio Henao and Italy's Vincenzo Nibali have broken away at the front of the race. If this sticks, they'll be guaranteed a medal - barring any falls on this wicked descent.

Poland's Rafal Majka has managed to join them but Nibali has pumped a bit harder and he's pulling away by himself.

    There's 17.1km to go.

The British men have produced an impressive set of displays in the team and individual all-around qualification event.

The team are currently ranked second on the floor and first after the pommel horse section, with both Louis Smith (pictured) and Max Whitlock in excellent form.

Whitlock, 23, who won two bronze medals at London 2012, is heading the all-around qualification list with four apparatus remaining.

Geraint Thomas has a genuine medal chance as he sticks with the pace of the lead group.

Vincenzo Nibali, Greg van Avermaet and Rafal Majka are all there - esteemed names in cycling.

It's a grueling climb to Vista Chinesa - but it's the last time they will need to do it.

Who has the fortitude to freewheel it down the descent on the side?
