“I’ve had an interesting last few months,” says Williams Fox-Pitt after ending day one at the top of the individual dressage leaderboard.

The 47-year-old suffered a head trauma last year that saw him placed in an induced coma.

“I’ve been very lucky – I’m lucky to be here,” he adds. "It was very special riding into the arena today. This is my fifth Olympics – they’ve all been useless! It would be great if this one went well.”

It's all a little cat-and-mouse between these two at the minute - almost as if neither want to win.

Heather Watson breaks in the second game of the deciding set, Peng Shuai breaks straight back.

Yup. Take a bow Hoang Xuan Vinh, you're now a bona fide Vietnamese legend.

Vietnam's Olympic record stood at two silvers before today, but Hoang's score of 202.5 was enough to see off silver medallist Felipe Almeida Wu of Brazil and bronze medallist Wei Pang of China.

An inspiring setting for gymnastics, but we've also been reminded of how dangerous the sport can be as France's Samir Ait Said has broken a leg after a bad landing in the vault.

The Frenchman received the biggest cheers of the afternoon so far as he was carried away on a stretcher.

There are plenty of empty seats in this soup bowl of an arena, but the fans who are here - many in yellow t-shirts - are creating a sparkling atmosphere.

Men's road race gold medallist Greg van Avermaet: This is the biggest title you can have. It was not a great course for me, it was really hard but I had a great day and the last 10-15km was perfect. A lot of riders crashed so I just kept it safe and in the end it went perfect for me. Incredible moment.

    Chris Boardman
    Olympic cycling champion

The British team, regardless of the outcome today, rode fantastically well. I was really impressed with the way they managed their resources. Ultimately they did not have the legs today. Even Chris Froome when he went for it, he wasn't making inroads. He has had a lot of responsibility since the Tour de France and has clearly lost a bit of edge.

What about the Britons? Geraint Thomas was able to get back on his bike and finish - he was the first Brit over the line. A minute or so later, Chris Froome and Adam Yates come into the home straight together, but Froome, ever the competitive man, gives it a sprint finish.

Phenomenal ride by Greg van Avermaet. I wouldn't have said he would have been the one I would have had today but he showed some grit and his endurance paid through.

I am amazed he had the grit to stick in there with true climbers up an ascent like that. He showed why he is a top classics rider. He is more than just a sprinter, he can read a race and read himself and measure his energy.
