As the BBC Radio 5 live pundits battle some pretty grim food in the canteen at Deodoro the talk turns to the morning session.

It's pointed out that the best three sides on show in women's sevens were Australia, New Zealand and Canada - who are in that order in the world rankings too. It's going to form then. Great Britain, fourth seeds, probably also next on the list of displays, they return to action at 21:00 BST.

A second game of the day in these conditions will be tough going but Japan - their opponents - got taken apart to lose 45-0 to Canada earlier. A must win then.

We will Facebook live from the stands at around 19:30 BST.

Chris Froome has decided it's time to stop messing around. He's gritted his teeth and pulled away from the second group and now he's hunting down the leaders. He'll pass team-mate Adam Yates imminently.

Italian Fabio Aru is dropping off the leaders, but his countryman makes a move at the front. Geraint Thomas is clinging on.

There's suddenly loads of plonkers trying to run alongside the riders.

    There's 21.3km to go.

Estonia's Tanel Kangert is not happy with the pace of the peloton so has marched off on his tod to chase down the leaders.

The lead group of 10 is moving too though and the pace is causing Briton Adam Yates to struggle as they go on the final lap of this Circuito Vista Chinesa.

Now, the peloton is about a minute adrift of the the leading group and they're running out of time to haul it back in.

Alejandre Valverde and Fabian Cancellara are trying to increase the pace - Chris Froome is with them.

There are 10 men in the lead group, including British pair Adam Yates and Geraint Thomas. But Vincenzo Nibali is lurking there too.

    There's 24.3km to go.

Looking pretty impressive Karthi. Good news for British tennis fans as well, with Heather Watson leading Peng Shuai in the women's first round, and Kyle Edmund already through in the men's after a 6-4 6-2 win against Jordan Thompson.

Nasty crash in the cycling as Portugal's Nelson Oliveira miscues a left-hander on the descent and ends up in wire netting. He seems OK.

It really is a terrifying downhill. Have you ever been on the Oblivion at Alton Towers?

Oh and here goes another... it's Australian Richie Porte! He's banged into a pole and almost taken it out of the ground. He's in a bad way and could have a broken collar bone.

This is Joshua Champion, he has a Union flag wrapped over his shoulder and two beers on the go. Life is good for Joshua Champion.

He's hanging around the outside tennis courts with his friends, but it's the gymnastics they've come to Rio to see as he attends the same club as Team GB's Ellie and Becky Downie.

Hopefully he'll be able to navigate his way to the gymnastics in a few hours despite the potent mix of beer and sun.

It seems there may be of extra audio on the cycling road. But who doesn't love some Metallica?

Rhodri Evans: Not sure about the rock music in the background for the cycling.

David Forrest: Loving the @Metallica soundtrack for the men's road race

James Charman: Loving the soundtrack to the #cyclisme. Nice bit of Metallica being picked up by the cameras.

    Phew!

Closer than James Guy - the 2015 world championship silver medallist - would have liked, but he's into the final of the men's 400m freestyle. He was sixth fastest in the heats.

No such luck for compatriot Stephen Milne in the same event, though. He did at least record a lifetime best.

This is the head of World Rugby Brett Gosper watching on.

He's taking in Fiji women as they overcome USA 12-7. Gosper is clearly loving his sport being on this stage and in cool shades comes across as ultra smitten with the Olympics.

To our right we had some USA staff with ear pieces in, one of which kept shouting "she's stealing". It became a little annoying but the poor guy had several Fijians behind him and they were going mad.

The 47-year-old, who suffered a head trauma last year, is on 36.90 points, ahead of Australia's Christopher Burton.
