So an eventful first day at the rowing as the stands empty at Lagoa:

    • One sunken boat amid choppy conditions (Serbia will get another chance in the repechage)
    • A decent day for the Great Britain team, although there is work to do for the newly-formed men's quad
    • This Dutch supporter insisted on wearing this suit despite the boiling temperatures
    • And Christ the redeemer enjoyed the fun. (We assume)

Everything's starting to bunch up. In fact, there's a lovely camera shot showing the chase group within sight of the peloton.

Geraint Thomas is in that chase group and he has Team Sky team-mate Sergio Henao of Spain for company.

The two leaders out front are Pole Michal Kwiatkowski and Russian Pavel Kochetkov - but they look like they might be starting to fade.

Vincenzo Nibali, Alejandro Valverde and Chris Froome all look comfortable and happy to attack from the peloton at some point.

    There's 47.8km to go.

Right. Things are getting tasty on the road.

Britain's Geraint Thomas has set off to chase down the breakaway group, he's got a few riders including Belgium's Greg van Avermaet for company. They're 25secs behind the two leaders.

And Chris Froome is looking comfortable in the peloton, which is about another minute further back.

Has Thomas gone on to haul in the leaders for his mate Froome?

It's toasty on court eight, temperatures rising, bodies sweltering. Kyle Edmund handling the heat well, though, comfortably winning the first set against Jordan Thompson in under 40 minutes. That forehand of his hotter than the Rio sun.

There aren't many here to watch the pair, about 30 in total, which includes coaches, volunteers and, well, me.

"Great serving," says Brit Jamie Barker from the sidelines, clapping in encouragemebt.

    Row

You might not have heard of heard of United States rower Megan Kalmoe.

The London 2012 bronze medallist in the women's quadruple sculls wrote a blog recently asking the media to stop focusing on problems which affected the Rio Olympics such as water quality and Zika, and start concentrating on the athletes. Her musings included the line "I will row through s*** for you, America".

So you can forgive me for approaching a guy, who was wearing a T-shirt with that quote emblazoned on his chest.

Turns out it was Megan's younger brother Bill.

He explains: "She loves writing and had a very strong opinion about the media's portrayal of Rio hosting the Olympics. She thought it was better to focus on the athletes and just say they would do whatever it takes. There are bigger concerns worldwide.

"She had no idea the blog and that quote would take off and make national news. But she has loved the reaction of those who've rallied around her and is pleased and surprised by the response."
