After Joe Clarke took kayak K1 gold on Wednesday night, the rest of the GB paddlers should be feeling inspired to face their respective finals today.

Current Olympic silver medallists David Florence and Richard Hounslow hope to upgrade on their 2012 result, followed by Fiona Pennie in the women's K1 event.

Both must get through a semi final before starting to look longingly at the Olympic podium...

I've just had a fascinating chat with TV commentator Patrick Winterton about the canoe slalom course in use for today's climax to C2 and K1 events - medals on the line for GB.

Here's a shot of the course. He explains that there are 24 gates and six must be upstream (circled). That means a paddler must loop around the gate and go back through it against the current. Power needed.

Patrick explains it's all about your line into gates. Sometimes you can get too tight through a gate and lose momentum rather than using the water to slickly guide you and carry you forward with pace.

It's all so technical and the margins are tight. A reminder, at 16:30 BST it's the C2 semi final - David Florence and Richard Hounslow go. The women's K1 semi comes later and both events will have finals today.
