I've never heard the sedate town of Henley more animated. The rollercoaster of emotions continued as Grainger and Thornley were pipped to the post and come second in the double sculls. .

You can barely hear BBC Berkshire's Tim Dellor commentating.

Oh my word. There are a group of Britons in the opposite stand screaming as if they were all giving birth. They're on their feet, moving their feet as if they were on hot coals, and waving the Union flag. Why? It's because Britain's Natalie Powell has beaten Gabon's Sarah Myriam Mazouz to reach the quarter-finals. It'd be an understatement to describe them as happy.

This is the roll call of the most successful British women at the Olympic Games.

Katherine Grainger has as many medals as old-school tennis star Kathleen McKane, but not as many golds at the likes of Laura Trott and Charlotte Dujardin.

They can argue over it back at the athletes' village.

Katherine Grainger on BBC One: "It was one of those races. At the start we would have taken it with both hands but there is a tinge of what could have been. I am so proud of what we have done. It is a medal not many people would have put money on.

"You never think you are going to win but I knew we were feeling good but were drawing on every element and experience we’ve got but it wasn’t quite good enough."

    Women's double sculls

Katherine Grainger's silver medal takes her Olympic collection to four silvers and a London 2012 gold.

That haul of five Olympic medals equals the most won by a British woman.

The 40-year-old took a couple of years off after London 2012 to recuperate and has done tremendously well to get up to speed.

It is the first Olympic medal in Victoria Thornley's portfolio,
