GB take the lead against Japan

Terrific stuff as GB's women take an early lead against Japan. Lily Owsley wriggles clear on the right and fires in a dangerous low cross, unfortunately, it is Japan captain Miyuki Nakagawa on the end of it and can only put it into her own net.

Heather Watson had her bags packed and was heading for home before being given a last-minute opportunity to play in the mixed doubles tennis event.

Watson and Andy Murray initially missed out on the 16-team tournament because their combined ranking was too low, but were given a place just 45 minutes before their first-round match after Romanians Florin Mergea and Monica Niculescu withdrew.

They took full advantage with a 6-3 6-3 win over David Ferrer and Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain.

Watson, who lost in the second round of the singles, said: "I had a flight tonight. I genuinely had all my stuff packed, I brought it here, I came here just in case. I had no idea, wasn't sure if we'd get in and then just got told, 'Get your kit on, you're on'."

I like that Mike. I asked my wife the other night 'how do you think you win at judo?'

After a bit of thought she came up with the rather bleak 'when one of them dies?'

    That's a very different Olympics.
