"The way to the gold medal was not easy at all. The training was very hard and sometimes I had difficulty just standing on my own feet at training. Sometimes I finished training crying, but I always thought that the hardships of training would bring me one step closer to this gold medal."

She was at it again during the medal ceremony but the tears were worth it for North Korea's Rim Jong-sim after she claimed Olympic gold in the women's -75kg weightlifting.

"Rutherford out of position...the striker all on his own at the far post...must be...ISN'T!!!"

When Greg Rutherford finally hangs up his spikes, maybe he can pull on his studs and go in goal.

The world's best long jumpers can cover more than the full width of the goalposts in a single bound.

Which makes despairing dives a little less desperate.

Britain's Nick Dempseyis guaranteed silver in the men's Olympic RS:X windsurfing before the final day of competition on Sunday - but then he's on the job hunt.

Dempsey won silver in London, having taken a bronze in Athens in 2004, and will retire after this event.

"Saturday's a day off and my birthday, and Sunday is my last ever race so I'm going to want to win," said the 36-year-old.

"I'm unemployed as of next week - I'll have to get a job. I'd like to do photography if I can make it work, and a bit of coaching. I'd like some new challenges and new goals and I want to keep being driven in life and achieve something else."

Dutchman Dorian van Rijsselberghe, who won gold in 2012, will hope to retain his title in the final.

Bradley Wiggins took his Olympic gold medal tally to five after he helped Team GB win a dramatic men's pursuit at the velodrome.

“It was a nailbiting final and probably one of the best Olympic team pursuit finals, if not the best we've ever seen. The British just nailed it," Sir Dave Brailsford, the former performance director of British Cycling and current team boss, told BBC Radio 5 live.

"When you look at the range of events across which he (Wiggins) has performed at the best of the world level then nobody has been close to that. It's off the scale, it's incredible and what a guy.

"If it is his last Olympics, it's going to be really sad but I think we'll remember him for a very, very long time. I think everybody will look back with very fond memories about an amazing character.”
