Great Britain's showjumpers saw their Olympic team title defence disintegrate on Tuesday, after they crashed out in round one.

However, Ben Maher and Nick Skelton all moved through to the next individual phase, with 45 riders jumping again at 14:00 BST on Wednesday. This event doubles up as the team final.

Clean rounds should see the Brits progress, but they have work to do in terms of catching the current leading medal contenders that include American Kent Farrington, Germany's Christian Ahlmann and 2008 Olympic champion Eric Lamaze of Canada.

"I’m off to Bermuda in November, so the next thing is the America's Cup with Sir Ben Ainslie and the guys.

"I’m on a bit of a high and the guys while I have been away have won the latest World Series event so hopefully we can put the next 10 months together really well. It would be great to cap off an Olympic gold with an Americas Cup win."

Mo Farah's quest to do the 5,000m-10,000m double (again) continues with the heats for the shorter distance today at 14:05 BST.

A second gold medal in Rio would makeFarah a nine-time global champion – a distance-running record moving him ahead of Kenenisa Bekele’s tally of eight.

The 33-year-old Briton has won the last four global titles over 5,000m – a run which began at the 2011 World Championships.

He's also done the 5,000m-10,000m double at London 2012 and the World Championships of 2013 and 2015.

It might not be straightforward, though. All three of the Ethiopian team, which includes 2015 World Championship bronze medallist Hagos Gebrhiwet, have clocked times within a second of Farah’s 2016 best of 12 minutes 59.29 seconds.

The first five in each heat and the five fastest losers advance to final, which takes place at 01:30 BST on Sunday.

She made headlines in 2008 after she was subjected to gender verification testing and was deemed "intersex".

South Africans have taken to Twitter in support of Semenya with the hashtags #Caster4Gold.

Independent Online News tweeted a poem "Caster is Mokgadi" in defence of Semenya's self-identification as female.

Later today we will see if Great Britain's women can secure a place in the hockey final when they meet New Zealand at 21:00 BST.

The team seem to be in an ultra focused mood. They've won every game out here. A team-wide social media ban has been imposed from the start of the tournament. They also turned down attending the opening ceremony as they didn't want to be stood up in queues for too long.

That's commitment to the cause. Hopefully tonight I can find the boyfriend of GB player Sam Quek (right). He's attending every match in a different fancy dress. He was a knight in armour with a drum last time. Another committed character it seems.

Security called after Iranian protestspublished at 13:35 British Summer Time 17 August 2016

Security forces were called to the Olympic weightlifting arena after Iranian coaches reacted furiously when a lift by Behdad Salimikordasiabi in the +105kg category was ruled invalid.

The 26-year-old Iranian's left arm was deemed not to be straight on his second 245kg clean and jerk attempt.

Sajjad Anoushiravani, Iran's head coach, said there was a "conspiracy".

"It was getting ugly and we asked the competition manager to call security because of the behaviour by the Iranian officials," said Sam Coffa, chairman of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) technical committee.

The IWF website was unavailable after it was hacked on Wednesday by someone who plastered the homepage with Salimikordasiabi's name and photograph.

The IWF's Instagram page was also flooded with over 285,000 comments after the incident with one user writing: "Behdad is winner in our hearts. God damn the Olympics."

Britain's cycling tactics 'not for the purists'published at 13:26 British Summer Time 17 August 2016

    BBC Monitoring
    News from around the globe

There has been some veiled scepticism from France's Le Telegramme, external regarding the British cycling team's triumph at Rio.

"Sprint is fast becoming above all a sport of strength, in which the emphasis is on muscle power - perhaps excessively so for the purists," they wrote.

"The phenomenon affects women's events slightly less, although Britain has been able to 'manufacture' a female sprinter in barely three years. Katy Marchant, who won a bronze medal in the speed race at Rio, was still taking part in the heptathlon at the beginning of 2013."

Some media outlets quote the words of German rider Kristina Vogel, who said other countries' teams were asking themselves just how the British were managing to notch up quite so many medals.

Meanwhile, outspoken French ex-cyclist, ex-coach and now columnist Antoine Vayer has been posting a number of provocative tweets aimed at British cyclists, with the latest simply stating: "£ycling".
