Tension on the trackpublished at 12:25

    Athletics

Pole vault silver medallist Renaud Lavillenie was reduced to tears on the podium on Tuesday, but this time they weren't tears of happiness.

On Monday he was booed by the partisan home crowd before his final vault - losing out to home favourite Thiago Braz da Silva in a dramatic final.

Lavillenie said the "nastiness" of the crowd had "really disturbed" him and compared his treatment to that of African-American athlete Jesse Owens in the Nazi-era Berlin Games of 1936. He later apologised, saying he made the Owens comparison immediately after the competition when very upset.

More boos followed on Tuesday. Lavillenie held his head in his hands on the podium and was later consoled by Brazilian gold medallist Da Silva.

It might have appeared the very embodiment of the Olympic spirit but German athletics officials were not impressed when twins Lisa and Anna Hahner held hands as they crossed the finishing line in the women's marathon on Sunday.

They were accused of treating the race like a "fun run", while Thomas Kurschilgen, sports director of the German Athletics Federation, told the New York Times:, external “Their main aim was to generate media attention. That is what we criticise.”

Anna Hahner insists it wasn't a pre-planned act, saying: "It was a magical moment that we could finish this marathon together. We did not think about what we were doing.”
