There's been so much to celebrate in the Velodrome for Team GB, but Sir Dave Brailsford - British Cycling head coach - has picked out a couple of moments he has enjoyed the most...

"On the very first night there was Callum Skinner," Brailsford told BBC Breakfast. "He’d not been to a Games before, it was a 'will he won’t he' kind of thing. He smashed it. They’re all going to get an enormous amount of credit but for me Callum, in his first Olympics, needed to deliver in a pressurised situation and he did it fantastically well. That’s the great story.

"There was another moment with Owain Doull in the team pursuit when he had to squeeze in at the back. I’ve never screamed so much at the tele. And then of course you’ve got Becky James. When you know her back story, it’s incredible.

"You’ve got stories like Bradley and Mark Cavendish, but I think it’s the next generation coming through which is the best thing."

Team GB's Laura Muir came into the Games having broken Kelly Holmes' British record in the 1500m last month.

But the Scot had to settle for seventh place in Rio, crossing the line in four minutes and 12.88 seconds as Kenya's Faith Kipyegon took gold.

She was clearly emotional after the race, but received some morale-boosting tweets from Holmes and Paula Radcliffe.

'They've taken it to a new level'published at 09:10 British Summer Time 17 August 2016

    Track cycling

Sir Dave Brailsford, British cycling head coach and the man credited with producing mass-medalists, has been speaking to BBC Breakfast about what it was like before investment came into the sport.

"Most of the athletes worked and most of the coaches were part time," he said. "You hear anecdotes about being selected for Team GB and being given a jersey, a tyre and an in-tube and if you didn't puncture it, you had to give it back. It was that level of operation.

"We started out in Sydney, when the lottery money arrived and the program started to build. We had some momentum going into Athens and then in Beijing we had this big breakthrough. From there it was ‘can we go and do that again in London?’.

"London was an incredible experience. I stepped out to focus on the Tour de France and Team Sky, and Shane Sutton and a whole set of new coaches arrived, and they've taken it to a new level."

Not everyone has been bowled away by Britain's success in the velodrome.

At last year's world championship, Britain failed to win a single gold medal finishing 10th in the medal table.

Germany's Kristina Vogel described the upturn in Britain's performance as "very questionable" earlier this week., external

And a sprint gold last night has done little to dampen her curiosity.

"It seems like they do not train for three years, then they start, and just kill us," said the German.

"I think they are doing it right, I just to know what they are doing."

  18. The best ever for Britainpublished at 08:40 British Summer Time 17 August 2016

So it's official - Team GB have had their best away games in history.

Jason Kenny's gold on Tuesday took the team past the 47 medal mark which was achieved in Beijing in 2008.

With five days of competition still to go in Rio, Team GB sit in 2nd place on the medal table with 19 gold, 18 silver, 11 bronze across 14 different sports.

Tracey Crouch, the minister for sport, said of the achievement: "The performance of Team GB at Rio 2016 has been phenomenal.

"Surpassing the medal target with days of competition left is an incredible achievement and I congratulate the whole team, including the athletes, coaches, physios and all the support staff, on already making this our best ever performance at an away Games."
