Paul B: Unfortunately, "hanging around" isn't really an option at this Olympics. For Covid bubble reasons, you have to be on the plane home within 48 hours *of elimination* - the accreditation gets revoked after that. Major anti-climax if you fall on day 1.

Having tried for years, I was finally selected to play badminton for Scotland. I misread the instructions and turned up at 1300 rather than 1100 for the match. That was it.

The humidity now must be absolutely stifling.

Showers are forecast more and more towards the backend of this race - but they are incredibly localised, as we've already seen.

The lead group is just haemorrhaging time now.

Climb 14km in length - which still only goes part of the way up the iconic mountainside.

Under 100km to go now, and the five-strong breakaway group are watching their lead gradually being cut down - it currently stands at just under 15 minutes.

Geraint Thomas still has a lot of ground to make up after his crash earlier and has just dropped back to the team car to take on board some fuel.

Imagine waiting five years to compete, only to go out before most of the others have found the canteen in the athletes' village.

What do you do with yourself? Next plane home or hang around to soak it in?

'I don’t mind the heat so I was prepared' - Watsonpublished at 06:51 British Summer Time 24 July 2021

    Women's tennis

Watson may now go on to compete in the mixed doubles - if she can find a partner.

“I think 100% I will try to sign up with someone. I am guessing I will have more chance to get in ranking-wise with Joe Salisbury and so fingers crossed we get the chance to play," she said.

“I always seem to play well on the doubles court. I feel like I am a team player and I like volleying a lot and that brings it out in my game.”

And how did she cope with the Tokyo heat?

“It was the same for both players but it did change the game a little. It became a fitness contest, but it was the same for both and I don’t mind the heat so I was prepared.”

'I literally could not have done any more' - Watsonpublished at 06:48 British Summer Time 24 July 2021

    Women's tennis

A little earlier on Great Britain's Heather Watson was knocked out in the first round of the women's tennis singles as she went down in straight sets 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 to Germany's Anna-Lena Friedsam.

“I think whoever I played, I would have been really disappointed with the outcome today. It definitely wasn’t my best tennis but I gave it my best with what I had, it just wasn’t enough," said Watson.

“There were too many unforced errors that came and went in waves. I am just very disappointed with the outcome.

“I did everything I could to prepare right and I literally could not have done any more. I felt really good going out there today.”

    Men's artistic gymnastics team qualifying

Gymnastics qualifying is fairly straightforward - there's six bits of apparatus, team members compete on each one, and their top three scores are added together to give the overall total.

The top eight teams qualify for the team final. The 24 best individual athletes qualify for the all-around final, while the top eight on each apparatus go through to the corresponding final.

Great Britain have started off on the rings, with Joe Fraser the stand out as he gets a score of 14.400.

There's been a lot of riders returning to the team cart for extra drinks, clearly the conditions are really hot and ice packs are being put down the back of the jerseys to keep cool.

It's definitely been physically challenging in the climate for a lot of riders.
